like 2004?

I don't like the signing. Where is B. Kim?

There has been no official announcement, and the Seibu Lions, Matsuzaka's team in Japan, have until Tuesday to accept or reject the high bid.

$40M just to be allowed to try to get a deal done? Yeah, they really have put the clamps down on runaway spending.

For that kinda dough, Sawx fans are gonna demand that they get the rights to the player that did the gay porn a while back too.

To Matsuzaka's slope team. That's what they are bidding on, the rights to negotiate.

After this, I don't wanna here any more whining from Red Sox management and fans about the Evil Empire's payroll. The Sox are paying $40 million for the right to be able to pay this unproven (in MLB) pitcher another 40 or 50 milion.

I'm not condemning or condoning this behavior. What I am saying is that the Sox can't complain about it anymore.

What?

Sox payroll = $120M (actually less, but I will give you the benefit of the doubt).

Yankees payroll = $200M (actually more, but I will give you the benefit of the doubt).

Add in a one-time charge of $40M and the Sox might spend $160M. The Yanks are going to spend $200M. Even on the best of days, the Sox are going to spend 25% less than the Yanks. That is not chump change and we are only talking about major league salaries. That does not count scouting, coaches, player development, etc.

If the Sox are spending a ton, then the Yanks are spending 2 tons.

You neglected to include his salary.

You also assumed that it was $40M that they are paying. Could be more or could be less, since it was a sealed bid. If you want to get technical, it is likely that it has deferred amounts and not a lump sum. Do you really want to get technical on this one?

I didn't say that the Sox are spending as much as the Yankees; but now they are in the same ballpark and they are the second highest payroll in baseball. They shouldn't talk about the Yankees going out and buying titles when they are spending 160 million themselves. I thought it was hypocritical last year, even more so now.

Nope. I was using your $40M number. And you are the one mired in technical minutia. Other than that I see your point. :wall:

They have been #2 in payroll for a while. However, when the gap between #1 and #2 is often times 80% or more, then you have an issue. The bottom line is that the Sox in their most expensive year, will still spend 25% less than the Yankees.

Again, I'm not here to defend the Yankees payroll. They will be about 30 or 40 million more than the Sox this year. However, they're not complaining about payroll. If they had 160 million to the Sox 200 million, I would have a problem with the Yankees complaining.
