Open Range

Recommended Posts

A lot of folks haven't seen this movie for whatever reason. Prolly one of my favorite westerns.

Yes, it has Kevin Costner, but he's fine in this. More than makes up for it with Robert Duvall. The movie is beautifully shot , a damn fine story, and good action.

If you haven't seen it, you should. Highly recommended.

One of my favorite lines is when Charlie asks Sue (after agreeing to get married) "If you don't do what I say, how's this gonna work?" and he's half serious :dunno: She just smiles and he goes on looking slightly perturbed.

I'd definitely recommend this as well--especially if you like the feel of classic Westerns.

It is indeed beautifully shot and has some pretty good action as well. Some people complain that Open Range moves a bit slow; however, that's one of my favorite things about it, as the slow pace allows you to get to know the characters and really builds the suspense for the action later in the film.

I'm not a big Costner fan at all, but he's shown that he understands two concepts pretty well:

1) Baseball (Field of Dreams & Bull Durham)

2) American West/Frontier (Open Range & Dances With Wolves)

good movie... kind of a "B" version of Unforgiven with Costner (Charley Waite) playing the Eastwood role and Robert Duval (Boss)l doing an admirable job as the older, wiser, side-kick.

If you enjoy Westerns, this is certainly one to see.

Boss Spearman: I aim to kill Baxter and those that done this, and if that marshal gets in the way, I'm gonna kill him too. So you best get your mind right about what's got to be done, Charlie.

Charley Waite: I got no problem with killing, Boss. Never have.

Boss Spearman: We come for justice, not vengeance. Now them is two different things.

Charley Waite: Not today they ain't.

Boss Spearman: Sounds like you got it all worked out.

Charley Waite: Yeah, except the part where we don't get killed.

Boss Spearman: A man's trust is a valuable thing, Button. You don't want to lose it for a handful of cards.

Excellent western for the times.

I highly recommend it. It's been one of those movies for me (kinda like Shawshank Redemption) where I see it on TV, and just end up watching it even though I've seen it 20 times.

Charlie..."Sue, you're the handsomest woman I ever saw"

Button: What you do that for?

Charley Waite: Cheatin' at cards.

Button: I apologized to you for that.

[to Boss Spearman]

Button: Eh, Boss? I apologized to him for that.

Boss Spearman: Evidently he ain't over it yet
