Snuff 10 Posted April 25, 2007 Yes. You just need to go to a place that can order it for you. Or they may just have it in stock. What kind is it? I'll have to check. Like I said, my dad gave it to me and that was the first time I used it, didn't pay a whole lot of attention to it, just wanted to get the grass cut asap at the time. Were you serious about the duct tape, cuz it wouldn't be beneath me to do something like that.
jerryskids 6,780 Posted April 25, 2007 I don't mind yardwork at all. In fact, I enjoy it. But cleaning the house does suck ass. We have a large yard with a lot of grass and mature trees/bushes. When it is 115 in Phoenix in the summer, cutting the grass is not terribly enjoyable. I use the messicans for basic maintenance: mowing, weeds, etc. I save the fun stuff (using the sawzall and other fun tools to whack back the big stuff) for me. p.man 7 Posted April 25, 2007 When De-thatching you should try doing it in the fall. You will than have a much healthier weed free lawn in the spring. And it will green up quicker. I'm not saying you can't do it in the spring, but I'm just saying that it is the better way to go. The best time to put grass seed down is in the fall too. Right after you de-thatch. 1st or 2nd week of October would be great. I'll have to check. But if you get the plastic insert plug you wont have to worry about doing that.

Yeah, if it was that hot around here, I'd do the same. Yardwork in that kind of heat would suck.

There's a place called Plano Power Equipment on the net where you can buy parts for just about any mower, including mulching plugs if one is made for yours. Got one for my Honda Harmony. Just get the model number off the machine. ETA: rink

jerryskids 6,780 Posted April 25, 2007 True. http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/sto...970_41882_41882 Our summer grass in Phx (can't for the life of me think of the name of ours) gets very thick, so we have it dethatched every fall prior to planting the winter rye. Comes back up much nicer in the spring. Back when I did it myself, it was a biotch. Also hard on the mower engine. My neighbor/friend had an old beater mower that he (we) just used for dethatching. Then you had to rake all of it up. Blech. Also in Phx they couldn't care less if you put yard waste in the garbage. Grass should be bagged, but branches etc. I just put in the can. Also once per quarter they have a bulk collection which is shweet.

p.man 7 Posted April 25, 2007 Only poor people mow their own lawn. HTH. I'll bite. So you feel that just because someone is well to do they should just pay for everything? They should just pay other people do things that they could do for themselves? I take pride in the homes I own. Doing some work around the house is the least I could do. Plus it gets me away from the kids for a while. There are a lot of things I pay for and there are a lot of things that I like to do for myself. Mowing the lawn is fun for me. I feel like I'm on a go cart riding this mower. http://www.cubcadet.com/webapp/wcs/stores/..._10236_33817_-1 I pay for... Driveway sealer company. My driveway is too big for me to do it for myself. House trim/shutters to be painted. I hate heights. Lawn fertilizer company. The property is way to big and I figured out the cost if I did buy the chemicals myself. I'm saving just over $90 a shot by having them do it. They come 5 times a year. Rugs/Hardwood/Tile or any other flooring material that needs to be put down. Tree trimming work...See above about me liking heights. Painting my Great Room. It has a 26 foot ceiling and is over 550 sq ft. Any plumbing/electrical work. I'm not handy that way. And any construction stuff.

Snuff 10 Posted April 25, 2007 Oh yeah, and my little push mower is one of those fancy shmancy self propelled mowers. It goes a little slow, but hey, that's the less work I gots to do.
potts17 4 Posted April 25, 2007 So p.man, did you buy the bagger and the mulch attachment? Because according to the listing it doesn't come with it. So now your $3699 mower is just a go kart that wacks the crap out of grass and lays it on your yard without mulching or doing much of anything but just cutting the grass. There weren't prices for the attachments, but my best guess would be $600 for the bagger and $200 for the mulcher??? I'm a John Deere guy myself, but to each their own. Good info in this thread. Jerrykids, the dethatcher attachment is not a blade that you put on a push mower at all, either front mounted or rear tow behind on a riding mower. Mine is fronted mounted, with the bagger behind so once I dethatch and get all the crap up each fall, it magically goes in the bagger, so I don't need to worry about raking or anything, very very handy. p.man 7 Posted April 25, 2007 Potts, the mower comes with muching blades already on it. No need to by any attachments. If I wanted to bag the Twin Bagger is $250 not $600. I don't bag because I don't have to nor do I want to. Actually I do remember buying a mulch kit for $38.00. The reason for this was because of the side trap. Another set of mulching blades came with it so I figured it would be a good idea to have a second set for when I needed to change the blades. Plus, if anything ever happend to 1 of the blades I'd be able to replace it on the spot. I told snuff to do the same thing. Having a 2nd set is a good thing. At least I think so. potts17 4 Posted April 25, 2007 I have a second set as well, but to be honest have never used them, I usually just bring them down to the guy that sharpens them for me, I run some other errands, and I pick them back up about an hour later, so I always seem to use the same blades over and over. I don't know what I'm saving the new ones for!

There is no right or wrong with this, I guess it's just preference.

Not exactly sure what you are saying here. The thatching "blades" I've used in the past are basically flat blades that have, how to describe it, tines sticking down that de-thatch the grass. I guess you could nitpick the "blade" part since it doesn't cut like a blade, but it looks like one and goes where one would go. As for bag catcher, it was a long time ago and I don't recall why I didn't use one. My visual memory of my neighbor's craptastic mower was that it didn't even have a bag attachment. But... if I could have gotten an attachment for my mower that swept the grass into my bag, I would think I would have done it. I suppose I've killed too many brain cells to remember, so I'll defer to you on this. I don't know what I'm saving the new ones for! I used to just grind my blades sharp. Grinders are pretty cheap, and you could do it whenever you needed it. In AZ with young kids dragging 1/2" rock into the grass all of the time, that was quite often. Plus grinding your own blades sharp is a manly man thing to do.
