Vikings Sign Peterson

The Vikings have reached a contract agreement with Adrian Peterson that initial reports say could be the richest RB deal in the history of the NFL.

It took LaDainian Tomlinson years of being one of the NFL's top running backs to get the league's richest contract. It took one stroke of the pen for Adrian Peterson to get that done.

Within the last hour, Peterson has agreed to what VU has been told is a five-year deal that, if completed, will be worth $40 million, including $17 million in guaranteed money.

If those numbers prove accurate, it would surpass the contract signed last year by Tomlinson and will make Peterson the highest-paid running back in NFL history.

Peterson wasn't in Mankato for Sunday afternoon's practice, but he is expected to get his paperwork done at Winter Park early Sunday evening and be in Mankato by about 10 p.m. Head coach Brad Childress said Peterson will get a once-over from the doctors and may or may not have to run a conditioning test.

"We’ll see how he shows up. We don’t want to be ogres. The kinder, nicer Brad Childress doesn’t want to be an ogre. We want to be smart and make sure he can do the things he needs to do," Childress said.

Childress said Peterson won't be hazed for missing five practices, but he though veteran fullback Tony Richardson would have something for Peterson.

"Tony Richardson will find something for him because he was hazed pretty well. It won’t be excessive, I’m sure. He might have to pick

Good to have him in camp, but something really has to be done about these rookie contracts.

They all make too much, but Peterson will be worth whatever they pay him. Vikings fans will never regret a penny of it.

The only regret will come from the list of GM's that decided to draft someone else ahead of him.

havent seen it anywhere saying he ahs the richest deal in NFL RB history...

not saying its not true, but youd think people (i.e. ESPN and Minneapolis-based Fanball) would be making a bigger deal of it.

Anyone know?

All GM's should see what Tomlinson is making and nobody should get more than half of what he gets....yep, he's that good.

Noway should a rookie make more than LT, LJ, SA, Edge and some others. Whatever happened to earning your money. Don't get me wrong, if they're willing to pay it.....I'd take it to.

"I ain't sayin it's right, but I understand!"

i bet the way it's structured makes i more of a 4 or 5 year deal with major incentives for playing time and such (he's a rookie splitting time with another high priced rb, think peterson can get the 80-90% of the offensive snaps to kick in an escalator, or any other gimmick they get to pad the contract). I doubt he gets anywhere near the $40 mill

From Vikings Website

"The Minnesota Vikings have agreed to terms with 1st-round draft choice RB Adrian Peterson (#7 overall) from Oklahoma. The Vikings have now signed/agreed to terms with all 8 of their draft picks from the 2007 NFL Draft."

From Star Tribune

"The Vikings guaranteed Peterson $17 million over the course of the deal, a critical figure for running backs, who typically have shorter-than-average careers in the NFL. Although the contract technically spans six years, the final year is voidable and exists mostly for salary cap purposes. If he reaches none of the incentives but plays five years, Peterson will earn about $25 million.

Those figures reflect the Vikings' need for a dynamic playmaker who is equally comfortable running and receiving. Peterson averaged 130 rushing yards per game in three seasons with Oklahoma, and he displayed soft hands during the Vikings' spring workouts, a crucial skill in the West Coast offense."

So how many reps is Chester Taylor going to get anyway? I can already see the games against Detroit now...

Yeah, it's going to be tough to cover all of the Vikings talented receivers so that will really open up the run. :first:

Shaun Alexander signed an 8 year, $60.2M deal with $15M getting paid in the first year.

Ronnie Brown's deal was for 5 years, $34M with $19.5M guaranteed. Less total money but more guaranteed than Peterson.

Clinton Portis signed an 8-year, $50.5M deal in 2004 with $17M guaranteed. Same guaranteed money, more total, but less per year.

I have to say, I'm surprised Peterson's contract is so close to all of these. If Tomlinson had been a free agent this year, his deal would have blown Peterson's away, though. Timing is everything when it comes to contract numbers. I think LJ is looking for more than what Peterson got, too. Tomlinson got 8 years, $60M with $21M guarantees in 2004, when the salary cap was a lot lower.

Betweeen this and Priest threatening a comeback I would not want to be bringing the beers to Larry Johnsons house any time soon....

The NFL needs to have a rookie cap. Its getting insane what they are paying these players who have not made a NFL snap yet.

There's a cap, it's up to the teams to make their rookies fit into the cap. Thus the reason teams have capologists.

Man I hope the salaries keep on going up. Especially for RBs and the beating they take. NFL keeps on making more and more money...

A good company never settles for just making a ton a money, you always want to look towards the future and expand and make more money, its called being a good buisness.
