We were soldiers once

Recommended Posts

Watched that again this weekend. May be one of the most underrated of the Vietnam movies. And, unike most, is pretty well fact-based. As always, Sam Elliot plays a hell of a role and has some great lines.

And, not to be gay, but the scenes with Gibson's wife (Madeline Stowe) were pretty damn powerful. I can only imagine a taxi cab pulling up to my door and how pixxed I'd be at the driver for stopping by to ask directions. I don't know if it's true that General Moore's wife actually hand-delivered the notices, but It seems plausible. I'll tell, the last scene in the movie - when the cab drives by the window in the background - makes my stomach drop every time.

All in all, if you haven't seen this movie, it's one of my favorite of the overwrought and overdone Vietnam-era movies.

He spoke at our school when I was there. I just remember being bored, I wish I would have paid attention, but being a dumb college kid, all I kept thinking was that I hated these mandatory speakers.

Great line: (Said after moving prayer and everybody's already said "Amen"):

"Oh, yes, and one more thing, dear Lord, about our enemies, ignore their heathen prayers and help us blow those little bastards straight to Hell. Amen"

I just put a request to my local library for this movie. I have never seen it. I will post back in this thread after I watch it to let everyone know what I thought about it.

Great movie, but there was no "once" in the title.

At another site that I post at, Lt. Cnl. Hal Moore's granddaughter posts there.

Very awesome story, and one of my favorite movies.

Platoon is my other favorite war movie. Full Metal Jacket isn't too bad, but I prefer We Were Soldiers and Platoon.

I liked all the movies you listed. Platoon was was greta. Full Metal Jacket is one of my favorite movies. The beginning, when they are in recruit training, is almost exactly like boot camp on Paris Island really was, at least when I went there.

ETA: It probably isn't like that anymore. With all the PC crap going on today. A Marine boot-camp drill instructor was convicted last Wednesday of abusing recruits at one of the country's two training depots.

What, you don't have your "stress card" anymore?? :dunno:

What a sh!tarse, poosay idea...."I'm feeling stressed right now because you're yelling at me so let me hold up my little yellow card so that you will leave me alone for a few minutes." You know, cuz the enemy will honor your stress card when they're shooting at your arse....

Thanks, Clinton.....

It's been around seven years since Clinton left office. You can even look it up on Google but I'm pretty sure I'm right about that.

All in all I really like this flick but i could have done without the Barry Pepper photo montage. It just seemed out of place and over done. I wish they would have included the scene where Master Sergent shows up in formation with nothing but his medals pinned to his chest.

"Good Morning Master Sergent"

"What are you the fooking weatherman"...
