Ebonics

Recommended Posts

Before you go ahead and jump on me peenie about this being a racist thread hear me out. Why do blacks insist on speaking the english language this way? For the most part they recieve the same education that white people do and yet insist on using ebonics. Don't they understand that it makes them sound dumb? My class was about half black where I grew up. I watched as the black kids in class spoke their version of english even as teachers tried to break them of it. They did not care then and I am sure they don't care now. Hell even illegals can speak the english language better than a lot of blacks that were born here. Its just something I don't understand.

why do southerners speak the way they do, or new yorkers?

why do people from boston speak the way they do?

why do people from the midwest speak the way they do?

why do teenagers use language different than their parents?

why can't chinese pronounce the "l" sound or the french pronounce the "th" sound?

use common sense to answer that ridiculously simple question.

also, all blacks don't all do anything, some blacks speak the way you imply but i don't have a black dialect AT ALL and i'm sure you know plenty of blacks that don't speak ebonics. whatever that means.

It's just cultural. You speak like the people you are around. It's not a "black" thing anymore so than Italians eating spaghetti is an Italian thing. You do what you know, and you usually continue in the way you're raised. So if you're brought up hearing people speak like that, you're going to grow up to speak that way in all likelyhood, unless somewhere along the line you feel the need to speak correctly or whatever. The majority of people don't make that change, and sadly it's attached to a certain stigma that discourages more young people from speaking the right way.

New yorkers and southerners way of speak are accents. Ebonics is not even close to being the same thing.

He means (if I can speak for ya Kilroy) that NYC and the south add more of a "twang" to words, etc. while Ebonics has it's own vocabulary at times. It's like a derivative of English, with changed meanings, spellings, pronounciations, speech patterns, etc.

Hell, I don't know. There's so many that it's almost not noticeable anymore. How about changing the entire meaning of the word "ice" to describe diamo...err...bling-bling? Just stuff like that. It doesn't seem sensible to completely change entire words or phrases and assign whatever meaning you want to them.

Saying Y'all is not the same thing as this.

Ebonics: "Sheeeeiit, foo, I'z be doin' dat sh!t an' shorty be axin me fo' sum' scrilla."

English: Sh!t, friend, I am doing that stuff, and my girlfriend is asking me for some money.

I'll give you both:

who-se for house

The Big Dog Berlitz school for speaking ebonics:

1. For any monosyllabalic word, delete the last consonant or group of consonants.

2. For any polysyllabic word, delete the last syllable.

3 Conjugation of the verb "to be":

I be

We be

They be yesterday

You be tomorrow

And, a very common phrase that incorporates all the above:

"I be a mee mothafuck"

okay, so you're asking me why do some black people speak slang?

the same reason white kids speak slang, because they want to.

why do italians say "youse" for you all?

Not quite. Slang is one thing. Ebonics is another lazy language all together.

Again, that's a variation on a word. You can tell that's just an accented way of saying a certain thing. You know they're just pronouncing a word differently, but you still know what the hell they're talking about. Ebonics, as has been pointed out to you with specific words and phrases like you asked, just makes shit up and attaches meaning to it. How is that possible? Why do people do it? You're refusing to see the point here. A simple "I don't know" will be fine, but please stop rephrasing it to make it seem like it's nothing more than slang or something.

no one here speaks old english do they?

slang influences change in language.

it's called creativity.

right now i'm listening to a singer singing, "i'm walkin' down the road...." "goodness gracious great balls of fire...kiss me baby....girlie let me love ya...."

that's all slang, but it's slang that has been incorporated into everyday language.

i'm not going to sit here and answer stupid questions.

it's like me trying to answer why did blacks invent rap or hip hop.

Typical and totally expected responses all the way through when the answer is obvious:

1. Deflect

2. Obfuscate

3. Won't waste my time.

We all know what the real answer is and I mentioned it previously.

Having a nice little tint to your skin is a good thing. Not to mention that it lays down a nice base tan so you don't get burned when you go out in the sun. Tanning however does not mean that white people want to be black, again HTH.

Uh....yeah. Sure.

I suppose that's also the reason why most white women get shots so that they can have full lips like Black folks, right? Because full lips is "a good thing," right?

And also why white folks always steal and become a part of Black art forms such as jazz, blues and hip hop, right?

Wow, what thoughtful rebuttals. :music_guitarred:

Face it. Your ridiculous claim that whites don't envy Blacks is off base. Period. Don't be ashamed of it. Accept it. Embrace it. Live with it. But above all, don't deny it.
