Sho Nuff 720 Posted March 13, 2008 people spend hundreds on running sneakers. fock if I know why. You have to admit though, other than hockey, golf is by far the most expensive sport. People are willing to spend a lot of money on a lot of various things to get better or to think they are getting better. Lessons alone can cost you hundreds, thousands. Oh...I agree. I have spent quite a bit playing golf. And its worth every penny to me.
edjr 6,579 Posted March 13, 2008 I would love to be a CEO of a major corp but it's not going to happen because I don't have whatever "talent" that they supposedly have. And then get a $10 + million buyout when I suck at it. Golfers "work" a minimum of 4 days when they don't make the cut (practice day, pro am). If they make the cut, it's a 6 day week. 1 day off for travel and start the whole thing over again. These guys have a special talent that allows them to make a lot of money working at a job they love. Why the hate/jealosy or whatever the bad vibe is? No hate. I think it's the coolest thing ever and I wish I could do it. I love golf, I love to play and watch. No hate here. I said it's good work if you can get it. But Federer is all tennis has...and even then they draw crap for ratings in this country.

Did you look into one of those big tent like DR things for winter? Put in a bar/grill sports bar, 4 of those virtual golf machines, start winter leagues and you would likely have no competition in your area and clean up. But, back on topic, I have no idea why you would say the talent pool in tennis is deeper than it is in golf. Just the sheer fact that a tennis players life span to be competitive is at best mid 30's and golfers can be competitive well into the 40's deepens the pool. Different skills, reaction time in tennis is critical, not an issue in golf.

Yeah, cept the golf channel is free. I DVR'd the Federer/Sampras match the other night, only to wake up and have a blank screen for 3 hours.

I know more than Federer...but how many other people do? I would not say that nobody watches them...but their ratings are awful. Yup...there is a very good golf channel...comes with normal cable packages...why? Because people will watch it.

Yup...there is a very good golf channel...comes with normal cable packages...why? Because people will watch it. I can't argue here. I love tennis and I watch all the majors. Why? it's really the only tennis you'll see on national TV. For some people, watching 2 guys smacking a tennis ball back and forth for 3 hours just isn't fun. It will never be what golf is. They don't have the fans and it's just not as fun to watch on TV. Think about it. When you watch tennis on TV, for the most part you watch the same 2 people from start to finish. When you watch golf, sure they show all of tiger's shots, but you still see a ton of other action.
Cruzer 1,995 Posted March 14, 2008 i really don't follow tennis that much, but i'm not certain it's sport has more talent than the current crop of the pga tour. already thru 11 tournaments this year, the pga has produced 10 different winners. have no idea, nor the inclination, to look up what the atp has done - but i'm guessing it's not this spread out. in addtion to this, the pga also has rows and rows of players on other tours that are talented beyond comprehension as well. i'd be interested to see what the ratio is of current players on the atp tour with major wins compared to that of the pga tour. one thing for sure is not in quesion - golf abuses tennis in ratings, money and popularity. Cruzer 1,995 Posted March 14, 2008 ...tiger is all golf has and with tiger starting to skip more and more events, the pga isnt happy... tiger is huge, but he's hardly all golf has. you have to look no further than the thriving business of golf. the last 2 years tiger has played 16 and 15 tournaments and the tour has hardly suffered. it's helped that the course rotation of the majors the last few years has been tremendous - returning to such famed venues as baltusrol, oakmont, southern hills, shinnecock, winged foot, pinehurst, etc...and speaking of tiger, the tour would certainly like for him to play more - but they are hardly mad. tiger saved the pga tour and has made tim finchem and countless others very wealthy people. there used to be a saying that for every dollar a player made on tour $.10 of that went walter hagen and $.10 went to arnold palmer - can prolly put tiger down for a $.15 piece. like mentioned - tiger played 16 & 15 tournaments the last few years - but that isn't much off from the usual 18-21 he normally plays. considering he went thru his father's death one year and the birth of his daughter the next, i think the tour is more than understandable on this. hell, even in his prime jack played no more than 21 tournaments a year. Cruzer 1,995 Posted March 14, 2008 because morons think tiger is going to show up for every event. you think when they buy their tickets, they know who will be there? us here in the metroplex have the fortune to have 2 pga tour events in the area. from my experience, tour events are going to sell gobs of tix no matter who is coming. naturally they go faster and and are harder to get when tiger shows up - but the times he doesn't the tix still get sold and suites/boxes still get filled. reason? it's a week long party of socializing, alcohol, business smoozing, and fun & sun. even those who don't golf make it out to a tour event when it comes to town just bcoz for that week, "it's the place to be." Another reason golf is bigger than tennis. it's a smoozefest. People use it for sales and all other kinds of things. 4 people can do out at a time and you can be 300 pounds and golf. You dont even have to get the ball off the tee. Tennis is an entirely different atmosphere.
Cruzer 1,995 Posted March 14, 2008 one of the things that bugs me is why the metroplex has no lpga tour event. it's stupid to not have one here and gosh knows there is plenty of room in their schedule to fit one in. if you've never been an lpga tour event, it's pretty damn great. Cruzer 1,995 Posted March 14, 2008 omg, this is funny. went to golfsmith at lunch - had to pick up some things. so i'm focking around with the putters and one caught my eye. it was a carbite, sort of a mallet looking thing. never looked at the price just started putting with it and needless to say, everthing was going down. i was like, damn. it also just a great feel and balance to it. so i look at the price tag: $29.99. i immediately thought of this thread and started cracking up! oh, and $30 later - that bastage is now sitting in my cherokee.
