Kris Kristofferson

Heard this song written and sung by him today on Sirius:

:dunno:

'If you don't like Hank Williams' by Kris Kristofferson

I dig Bobby Dylan and I dig Johnny Cash

And I think Waylon Jennings is a table thumpin' smash

And hearin' Joni Mitchell feels as good as smokin' grass

And if you don't like Hank Williams, honey, you can kiss my ass

Chorus:

'Cause I think what they've done is well worth doin'

And they're doin' it the best way that they can

You're the only one that you are screwin'

When you put down what you don't understand

I said, I dig Roger Miller, Merle Haggard; George Jones

Shotgun Willie Nelson and them rockin' Rollin' Stones

And Jerry Lee's still gotta be the coolest in the class

And if you don't like Hank Williams, honey, you can kiss my ass.

Chorus:

'Cause I think what they've done is well worth doin'

And they're doin' it the best way that they can

You're the only one that you are screwin'

When you put down what you don't understand

Another favorite, Johnny Cash sings it better but KK's version is good too...

'Sunday Mornin Comin Down' written by KK

Well I woke up Sunday morning

With no way to hold my head, that didn't hurt

And the beer I had for breakfast

Wasn't bad so I had one more for dessert

Then I fumbled through my closet for my clothes

And found my cleanest dirty shirt

It's the one I'm wearin'

And I shaved my face and combed my hair

And stumbled down the stairs to meet the day

I'd smoked my brain the night before

Or I smoked so much the night before

With cigarettes and songs that I've been pickin'

My mouth was like an ashtray I'd been lickin'

But I lit my first and watched a small kid

Cussin' at a can that he was kicking

Then I crossed the empty street

And caught the Sunday smell of someone fryin' chicken

And it took me back to somethin'

That I'd lost somehow somewhere along the way

Chorus:

On the Sunday morning sidewalks

Wishing Lord that I was stoned

'Cause there is something in a Sunday

That makes a body feel alone

And there's nothin' short of dyin'

Half as lonesome as the sound

On the sleepin' city side walks

Sunday mornin' comin' down

In the park I saw a daddy

With a laughing little girl who he was swingin'

And I stopped beside a Sunday school

And listened to the song that they were singin'

Then I headed back for home and

Somewhere far away a lonely bell was ringin'

And it echoed thru the canyon like

The disappearing dreams of yesterday.

Chorus:

On the Sunday morning sidewalks

Wishing Lord that I was stoned

'Cause there is something in a Sunday

That makes a body feel alone

And there's nothin' short of dyin'

Half as lonesome as the sound

On the sleepin' city side walks

Sunday mornin' comin' down.

This is a really good song sung by hank Williams jr. Sunday morning coming down is a great song and, coincidentally, is good to listen to on a Sunday morning drive as sung by johnny cash, but Steve earle does a good cover. A good cover of a JC song? I still miss someone by Robert earl keen.

Kris Kristofferson wrote and sings this one too, but I like Cash's

Why me Lord?

What have I ever done to deserve even one,

Of the blessings I've known.

Why me Lord,

What did I ever do that was worth love from you,

And the kindness you've shown.

Lord help me Jesus I've wasted it so,

Help me Jesus, I know what I am.

Now that I know that I've needed you so,

Help me Jesus my soul's in your hands.

Try me Lord,

If you think there's a way that I can repay,

What I've taken from you.

Maybe Lord,

I could show someone else

What I've been through myself,

On my way back to you.

Lord help me, Jesus, I've wasted it so,

Help me Jesus, I know what I am.

Now that I know that I've needed you so,

Help me Jesus my soul's in your hands.

Lord help me Jesus I've wasted it so,

Help me Jesus, I know what I am.

But now that I know that I've needed you so,

Help me Jesus my soul's in your hands.

Jesus my soul's in your hands.

Some Kristofferson trivia; Kris was a Rhodes Scholar and also once appeared in "Faces in the Crowd" in SI. He has a Masters degree in English Literature in addition to being an Army Ranger and Army trained helicopter pilot. He'a also taught at West Point. Interesting cat.

Also, Sunday Morning Comin' Down was originally recorded by... Ray Stevens!

Lucky SOB! Living in Hawaii you don't get any of the bigs coming through here all that often. Every July 4th the have a Bayfest where we will have 1, maybe 2 "big" acts roll in. I saw Paisley, Alan Jackson, Chris Cagle, Dwight Yoakam, Mont. Gentry to name a few. Far and few between!
