Happy Thanksgiving

Recommended Posts

I know it's not as big of a tradition in other parts of the country but in Mass/New England every High School Team plays Thanksgiving morning. It's the rivalry game for all teams and many of them have played each other for over 75 years!

Currently my HS team has played it's rival for 93 years! While I love the NFL on Thanksgiving the game I look forward to every year is a High School game. Everybody is home for the holiday so the stands are packed, it's the last game for a lot of HS seniors so they usually have groups of family there supporting them. Plus it's nice that the morning is about the kids and the future and what else could we be more thankful for. I'll get up at 8 AM, go to Fitzy's or the OPG, meet a few guys, we'll have a little cheerios and beer and then go to the game. Where I'll see hundreds of people I've known for years all there for the same reason. Family, football and thanksgiving!

Any other states/regions have this tradition?

No state playoffs in Mass.?

In Michigan, the state finals in all eight classes are played at Ford Field Friday/Saturday. The craptastic NFL team gets the Thanksgiving Ford Field date on a yearly basis... :pointstosky:

The State finals (actually we call them SuperBowls) are after Thanksgiving. In Mass if your football team goes 0-9 but wins the 10th game on Thanskgiving that's all that matters, especially as a Senior.

Check out this list of High School Football Rivalries 100 Years Old. You'll notice two things, a disproportionate amount are from Mass, especially when you consider we aren't a College Football or recruiting hot spot. You'll also notice that all the Massachusetts games are played on Thanksgiving!

Massachusetts

In Massachusetts, where high school football is not nearly the draw it is in other parts of the country, the Thanksgiving Day game is a long-standing tradition that brings out thousands of alumni and other fans. Virtually every school in the Bay State has a traditional rival and the holiday game is a focal point for all of them, no matter how unsuccessful the regular season may have been.

Watertown vs Belmont

Year 88! My rivalry. Watertown (my team sucks always) but we have tougher kids!

Beverly vs. Salem

Salem High School and Beverly High School have played each other since 1891.

BMC Durfee vs. New Bedford

New Bedford High School and B.M.C. Durfee of Fall River have contested this rivalry since 1893.

Chelmsford vs. Billerica

Chelmsford High School and Billerica Memorial High School have faced off against each other annually since 1927.

English High School vs. Boston Latin

The rivalry between English High School of Boston and Boston Latin School dates to 1887.

Fitchburg vs. Leominster

Leominster High School and Fitchburgh High School have played since 1894. As of 2008, it has been contested on Thanksgiving 103 times, out of 125 total matches.

Marlborough vs. Hudson

Marlborough High School and Hudson High School have played since 1904.

Medford vs. Malden

This rivalry has been contested since 1889.

Needham vs. Wellesley

The oldest high school Turkey Day Game rivalry in Massachusetts is between Needham and Wellesley, dating back to 1882.[3] Currently, Wellesley is leading the rivalry with 58 wins to Needham's 54 with 9 ties in the series.

Newburyport vs. Amesbury

Amesbury High School and Newburyport have officially contested this match since 1914, but there were also unsanctioned games dating back as far as 1891.

Newton vs. Brookline

Newton North High School and Brookline High School have contested this rivalry since 1894. This rivarly is widely known as the most intense in Massachusetts. Newton North leads the all-time series, 59-54-6, and have won 6 straight.

Outside of New England, society has learned to use the wheel, fire, and shoelaces.

Guys, there is no need to turn this into a New England rag session or anything negative. As you can see by the Mass"holes" who have already come out in support of Westborough and the Magicians (who is that?), we take the game seriously, we love it we enjoy it and go from there.

Thornton Melon? Where are you from? If you played in HS and still live in the same town why not attend?

WATERTOWN VS BELMONT! GO RED RAIDERS (WATERTOWN)!
