Saint Elistan 106 Posted August 16, 2010 Niners deal Balmer to Seattle http://blogs.sacbee.com/49ers/archives/2010/08/niners-deal-bal.html#ixzz0wmh0y3g1 Kentwan Balmer, the 49ers' former first-round pick who has gone AWOL from the team in recent days, has been dealt to the Seattle Seahawks, according to a source with knowledge of the situation. Terms of the deal are not yet known. Seattle needs depth along the defensive line and Balmer potentially could play multiple positions there, including nose tackle and defensive end. Moreover, former 49ers general manager Scot McCloughan, who drafted Balmer 29th overall in San Francisco, is now with the Seahawks.

Joey Gladstone 33 Posted August 16, 2010 Weird. With him being in the news I was just thinking back to how I wanted Seattle to take him in the 08 draft. Immense potential, b!tch-ass attitude. Im sure it was a pretty late pick. Despite a solid showing Saturday, the Hawks can use all the help they can get on the d-line. If somebody can convince him to play, I'd deal for Coffee too. Yeah, 6th sounds about right, I'll gamble on his talent for that price. A 5th for a guy that could be out of the league next year would have me rolling my eyes. Saint Elistan 106 Posted August 16, 2010 Niners strike deal with RB Westbrook http://blogs.sacbee.com/49ers/archives/2010/08/niners-close-to.html The 49ers have struck a one-year deal with free-agent running back Brian Westbrook, according to a source. Westbrook, 30, was released by the Eagles in March after an eight-year career. The last two years have been marred by an array of injuries, including two concussions in 2009. The 49ers, meanwhile, began searching for a veteran running back on Friday after running back Glen Coffee unexpectedly told the team he was retiring. Great signing for both parties. Let's see how he holds up.
Saint Elistan 106 Posted August 16, 2010 Fallout: Westbrook picks 49ers, not Rams http://espn.go.com/blog/nfcwest/post/_/id/21448/fallout-westbrook-picks-49ers-not-rams The St. Louis Rams hoped to add veteran running back Brian Westbrook. They'll have to settle for seeing him twice a year, provided Westbrook can avoid the injury problems that have limited him in recent seasons. The San Francisco 49ers' signing of Westbrook, announced by the team Tuesday, came three days after 2009 third-round choice Glen Coffee shocked the team by announcing plans to retire. The 49ers' sudden need for help at the position ultimately gave Westbrook an option more attractive than finishing his career with a rebuilding team coming off a 1-15 record, although it wasn't clear the 49ers were going to add a veteran. Westbrook would have fit better in St. Louis because his former team, the Philadelphia Eagles, ran the same offense the Rams have installed with former Eagles assistant Pat Shurmur as their offensive coordinator. The dynamics changed, however, once the 49ers decided they would pursue a veteran replacement for Coffee (coach Mike Singletary was initially noncommittal when asked about adding a veteran, but he told reporters Sunday that the team had promising options on that front). Singletary was clearly talking about adding Westbrook. It's a good move for the 49ers because Westbrook, if healthy, might provide a change-of-pace runner behind Frank Gore, something the team lacked even with Coffee. Sticking it to a division team is nothing but icing on this yummy cake. Also, the details of the Westbrook deal have been revealed: One-year, $1.25 million contract, with another $1.25 million available in incentives.
Saint Elistan 106 Posted August 16, 2010 Updated my best guess at our final depth chart. Ditched Moran Norris and Jason Hill for Brian Westbrook and Diryal Briggs. Haven't really heard enough about Travis LaBoy yet - who knows maybe he wont make the team. That would give us room for Curtis Taylor. The possibility of putting Boone back on the practice squad are still high, but I'm leaving him in for the sake of OL depth. If he goes, I could see us plugging Khalif Mitchell back into the DLine. My Projected Depth Chart Offense (26) Quarterback: Alex Smith, David Carr, Nate Davis (3) Running Back: Frank Gore, Brian Westbrook, Anthony Dixon (3) Fullback: Michael Robinson, Brit Miller (2) Wide Receiver: Michael Crabtree, Josh Morgan, Ted Ginn, Dominique Zeigler, Kyle Williams (5) Tight End: Vernon Davis, Delanie Walker, Nate Byham (3) Left Tackle: Joe Staley, Barry Sims (2) Left Guard: Mike Iupati, Tony Wragge (2) Center: Eric Heitmann, David Baas (2) Right Guard: Chilo Rachal, Adam Snyder (2) Right Tackle: Anthony Davis, Alex Boone (2) Defense/Special Teams (24) Left Defensive End: Isaac Sopoaga, Ray McDonald (2) Nose Tackle: Aubrayo Franklin, Ricky Jean Francois (2) Right Defensive End: Justin Smith, Demetric Evans (2) Left Outside Linebacker: Manny Lawson, Ahmad Brooks, Diyral Briggs (3) Left Inside Linebacker: Patrick Willis, NaVorro Bowman (2) Right Inside Linebacker: Takeo Spikes, Matt Wilhelm (2) Right Outside Linebacker: Parys Haralson, Travis LaBoy (2) Cornerback: Nate Clements, Shawntae Spencer, Tarell Brown, Will James, Karl Paymah (5) Strong Safety: Michael Lewis, Taylor Mays (2) Free Safety: Dashon Goldson, Reggie Smith (2) Special Teams (3) Punter: Andy Lee (1) Kicker: Joe Nedney (1) Long Snapper: Brian Jennings (1) Punt/Kick Returns: Kyle Williams, Ted Ginn Total Players:

Saint Elistan 106 Posted August 17, 2010 Maiocco released his assessment for every defensive player in the Indy game. Instead of pasting the entire thing, I'll just list a few of the more interesting notes. For the full assessment, please visit the link. Maiocco: 49ers Defensive Recap http://www.csnbayarea.com/08/17/10/Maiocco-49ers-Defensive-Recap/landing_maiocco_v3.html?blockID=291956&feedID=5936&qv=1#bp 63-Will Tukuafu: The undrafted rookie took Kentwan Balmer's roster spot late in the week. On his first snap, he did something Balmer never did in his two 49ers seasons: He recorded a sack.He lined up at left defensive tackle on a four-man line and soundly beat Chris Marinelli. He was credited with two tackles. 95-Ricky Jean Francois: Started at nose tackle and played well into the second half. He was credited with two tackles, one for a loss, and one pass defensed. Did a very good job of holding the point and getting penetration. He got past guard Jamey Richard to stop Brown for 1-yard loss in first quarter. 50-Diyral Briggs: He entered the game after nine plays and looked very impressive. He had three tackles but got steady pressure on the quarterback with two hurries and one pass defensed. He worked over tackle Adam Terry to stop Hart for no gain in the second quarter. He recorded an interception but fumbled it back to Colts in the second quarter. He had an exceptional game, but he did lose track of Tamme at the line of scrimmage, allowing him to leak out for a 3-yard TD catch. 23-Taylor Mays: Entered game after nine plays and wore the green dot on his helmet, signifying he was responsible for relaying the play calls to the defense. He was much better as a tackler than in coverage. Gave up a 16-yard catch to Tamme. But showed exceptional ability on one play when he was 10 yards off the line of scrimmage at the snap of the ball, closed quickly and tackled Brown for a 3-yard loss on a short third-down pass. He tried to disguise coverage in the second quarter, but did not get back in time to fulfill responsibility in two-deep coverage. 30-Reggie Smith: Was the 49ers' first-team dime back, and he had good coverage on Gonzalez in the back of end zone to break up a third-and-goal pass. He also made an interception of a deflected pass and made a 91-yard sprint for a touchdown to get the 49ers on the scoreboard.
Saint Elistan 106 Posted August 17, 2010 And here is the Offensive Player recap. Again - follow the link for full analysis. Maiocco: 49ers Offensive Recap http://www.csnbayarea.com/08/17/10/Maiocco-49ers-Offensive-Recap/landing_maiocco_v3.html?blockID=291984&feedID=5936&qv=1#bp 47-Brit Miller: Entered at start of second quarter and played 16 snaps at fullback. He did not touch the ball, but his blocking was good on consecutive second-quarter run plays inside the 10 that allowed the 49ers to score TD. 10-Kyle Williams: Entered on second drive of the game as the slot receiver in place of Michael Crabtree. He played four snaps. He caught one pass for 8 yards. But his best play was a 36-yard punt return. Also averaged 21.0 yards on two kickoff returns before leaving the game with a toe sprain. Unfortunately, the injury will keep him out of action for a while. He'll be off a minimum of two weeks -- at which point he will be re-evaluated. The 49ers have to be cautious, as this is the kind of injury that tends to linger. 82-Nate Byham: Saw his first action after Vernon Davis left the game in the first quarter. He played 37 snaps. Caught three passes for 52 yards after catching just 10 balls his entire senior season at Pitt. In pass protection, he did not switch with Joe Staley on a second-quarter stunt that led to a sack. 76-Anthony Davis: Started at right tackle. Played entire first half and two series in the second half for 41 plays. On the second series of the game, he had a false start and then allowed a QB pressure to Robert Mathis. He and Rachal did not work well together on a Moala sack. His run-blocking looked good. He allowed some pressure, including one in which defensive lineman Eric Foster got past him to force a Carr incompletion on a third-and-6 pass. 77-Mike Iupati: Started at left guard. Played entire first half and the second series of the second half for 38 plays. Showed a lot of the qualities that made him No. 17 overall pick. Nice drive block on Robinson's 6-yard run in first quarter. Also teamed with Baas for good push on Robinson's 3-yard TD run.
Saint Elistan 106 Posted August 18, 2010 49ers Camp Report: Practice 22 http://www.csnbayarea.com/08/17/10/-img-srchttpcsnbayareacomcommonglobal_im/landing_jaymeesire_v3.html?blockID=292504&feedID=2800 Summary: Brian Westbrook suited up for the first time as a 49er on Tuesday afternoon, but most of his reps were of the mental variety. He participated in individual drills, but watched the rest of practice from the sideline. He says he’s been studying the playbook all night and morning. The team practiced just once on Tuesday, in shells only. It was an afternoon session that was open to the public. Play of the day: On the final drive of the afternoon, Alex Smith went 7-for-7 and hit Jason Hill in the back of the end zone for a touchdown. Eye on reps: With Kyle Williams out for a couple weeks (toe), three different players took turns fielding punts: Ted Ginn, Brandon Jones, and Bobby Guillory. Injury report/On the sideline: Vernon Davis (knee) didn’t practice, Michael Crabtree (neck) was limited in practice, Brandon Long did not practice. Coaching moment: As the 49ers were going through team drills, Westbrook was on the sideline talking to running backs coach Tom Rathman about the plays they were running. Quotable: Michael Lewis, a teammate of Westbrook’s in Philadelphia said this about his now past and present teammate: “He’s got receiver skills. He’s a mismatch on DB’s as well as linebackers. I’m sure Jimmy Raye is putting together a scheme right now to utilize him on the field with Frank (Gore) as well.” Next practice: Wednesday Morning at 8:50 I love these little writeups. Saint Elistan 106 Posted August 18, 2010 49ers Camp Report: Practice 23 http://www.csnbayarea.com/08/18/10/49ers-Camp-Report-Practice-23/landing_maiocco_v3.html?blockID=292950&feedID=5936 Summary: The 49ers returned to padded practice for the first time in nearly a week with a two-hour workout. Running back Brian Westbrook saw limited action after taking "mental reps" during his first practice with the team on Tuesday. Afterward, offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye said he does not know much about Westbrook as a player. He knows only his reputation. Initially, Raye said he envisions Westbrook stepping into the role vacated by Glen Coffee's retirement. He said Westbrook will compete with Anthony Dixon to be Frank Gore's backup. Practice was highlighted by an eight-play "ownership" session, in which the offense ran red-zone plays inside the 15-yard line. During that time Alex Smith threw a touchdown, while David Carr tossed for two scores (Bakari Grant and Tony Curtis) and an interception (Matt Wilhelm). Offensive Play of the day: On a third-and-goal from the 8, Smith squeezed a pass into tight end Curtis, between the coverage of Tarell Brown and Taylor Mays. Curtis caught the pass and fell backward into the end zone. Defensive Play of the day: On the first play of 11-on-11 work, Patrick Willis jumped an inside route and intercepted Smith's pass intended for Delanie Walker. He would've taken it back for a touchdown. Injury report: Tight end Vernon Davis (right knee strain) rode a stationary bike on the sideline. He was injured in the first quarter of Sunday's exhibition game against the Colts. He is listed as day-to-day. . . . Receiver Michael Crabtree (neck strain) took part in individual work but was held out of 11-on-11 work. . . . Receiver/return man Kyle Williams (big toe sprain), injured Aug. 15, will be re-evaluated after two weeks. . . . Tight end Joe Jon Finley (ankle) and offensive lineman Chris Patrick (shoulder) did not practice. . . Cornerback Will James (ankle), out since Aug. 15, is expected to miss 4 to 6 weeks. . . . Linebacker Ahmad Brooks (lacerated kidney), out since Aug. 7, to be re-evaluated after two weeks; center Eric Heitmann (broken left fibula), out since Aug. 9, expected to miss 6 to 8 weeks. Taking it easy: Linebacker Travis LaBoy, who'd been out since Aug. 5 with a concussion, returned to work Tuesday. But he took this morning off, with the plan that he'll practice in the afternoon. . . . Defensive end Demetric Evans was given the morning to rest. Returning to work: Receiver Brandon Jones, who missed 11 practices and a game with a hamstring strain, made it through his second practice. Eye on reps: Westbrook got a limited number of second-team practice reps behind starter Frank Gore as he continues to learn his responsibilities in a new offense. He is making the transition after spending eight years in Andy Reid's West Coast offense with Philadelphia. Coaching moment: The coaching staff was particularly animated during the morning session. Defensive line coach Jim Tomsula loudly scolded defensive tackle Khalif Mitchell; defensive coordinator Greg Manusky got onto veteran linebacker Matt Wilhelm; and receivers coach Jerry Sullivan admonished Grant for lining up out of position. Tying up loose ends: Kicker Joe Nedney did not suit up for Sunday's exhibition opener, and camp kicker Shane Andrus handled all those duties during the first couple weeks of training camp. Nedney said he was being "proactive" in resting a groin condition that has plagued him throughout his kicking career. He said he has a calcified mass -- akin to a misplaced bone -- inside his muscle, the result of over-kicking when he was 17 years old. "At this point in my career, I have to be smart," said Nedney, 37. Nedney took a half-dozen kicks during live field-goal practice for the first time this summer. Notable: Although Dominique Zeigler was back deep on three punt returns Sunday. But he is rarely seen practicing that discipline. Today, Ted Ginn, Brandon Jones and Bobby Guillory fielded Andy Lee punts during practice. Quotable: "It's asinine to judge a quarterback during the exhibition season. To make a statistical analysis of what the quarterback does, for me, in the preseason would not be wholesome at all" -- 49ers offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye, speaking indirectly about Alex Smith's game Sunday, in which he completed 3 of 9 passes for 37 yards and an interception. On the sideline: Fred Smith and Jeff Mitchell, high-ranking members of the Santa Clara University athletic department, got out of the office in the morning to view the workout. Next practice: The 49ers return Wednesday for a 4 p.m. practice.
Saint Elistan 106 Posted August 18, 2010 mattbarrows The 49ers winnow down their receiver competition by waiving Brandon Jones ... The team also waived/injured G Chris Patrick bydavidwhite And then there were two in serious competition for fifth/final WR spot: injured rookie Kyle Williams and Jason Hill. Zeigler is No. 4 guy. Finally getting rid of Jones. Finally! Glad to hear that Ziegler is (at least in David's view) a lock this year. I still think there's a slight chance we keep 6 WRs, but I'm gonna roll with Jason Hill finally getting cut - which is a shame. Doesn't seem like he got a fair shake. The dude makes plays when he's on the field. Don't know how he got in the doghouse to begin with. I think he'll have a successfully career somewhere else if we drop him. Saint Elistan 106 Posted August 19, 2010 49ers Camp Report: Practice 24 http://www.csnbayarea.com/08/18/10/49ers-Camp-Report-Practice-24/landing_maiocco_v3.html?blockID=293177&feedID=5936 Summary: It's been a bad week for the 49ers legacy of former GM Scot McCloughan. After draft picks Kentwan Balmer and Glen Coffee left the team, the club today released receiver Brandon Jones, whom the 49ers awarded $5.4 million in guaranteed money a year ago in free agency. Jones, plagued by injuries during his short stint with the team, caught just one pass in eight games last season. "Letting Brandon go at this point will allow him the opportunity to latch on with another team," 49ers coach Mike Singletary said. "We wish him all the best in the future." The 49ers now have three openings on their 80-man roster, but they're keeping one spot available for nose tackle Aubrayo Franklin, the team's franchise player who is expected to sign his one-year, $7 million tender in the near future. Offensive Play of the day: Receiver Dominique Zeigler used ever inch of his 6-foot-3 frame and his 7-foot-2 high-jumping ability to get his mitts on and secure a Nate Davis pass in the end zone. Defensive Plays of the day: The 49ers concluded practice with two two-minute drills. Both times, the 49ers' defense had its way with the offense. Alex Smith's fourth-and-15 pass from the 42 was deflected by defenders NaVorro Bowman, Taylor Mays and Matt Wilhelm before landing incomplete. And Davis did not have much luck with his drive, either. His deep fourth-and-10 pass for Kevin Jurovich was overthrown. Taking it easy: Running back Brian Westbrook, who signed with the 49ers on Monday, was held out of the afternoon practice, as a so-called "veteran courtesy." Justin Smith, Takeo Spikes, Patrick Willis and Michael Lewis each received the same treatment. Returning to work: Outside linebacker Travis LaBoy returned to practice. Personnel report: The 49ers waived/injured offensive lineman Chris Patrick (shoulder). Notable: Former 49ers running back Glen Coffee sat down with Comcast SportsNet Bay Area for his first in-depth interview since announcing his abrupt retirement from football. The interview will air on SportsNet Central tonight and Thursday at 10:30 p.m. Video excerpts will be available on CSNBayArea.com. Next practice: The 49ers have two practices scheduled for Thursday: 8:50 a.m. and 4 p.m. The afternoon session is open to the public.
Saint Elistan 106 Posted August 19, 2010 49ers Camp Report: Practice 25 http://www.csnbayarea.com/08/19/10/49ers-Camp-Report-Practice-25/landing_maiocco_v3.html?blockID=293757&feedID=5936 Summary: It was another practice in which quarterback Alex Smith did not have his two most dangerous weapons in the passing game, tight end Vernon Davis and receiver Michael Crabtree. So, again, Smith worked on his rapport with wideout Dominique Zeigler, who appears to be doing everything in his power to nail down a spot on the 49ers' 53-man roster. The absence of Crabtree and Davis should not represent any kind of setback for Smith, coach Mike Singletary said. "It's just a matter of him continuing to get in a groove with the guys we have. Obviously, you'd want Crabtree on the field, and you'd want Vernon Davis on the field. But they're not there. There are a lot of things he can do as a quarterback to get better that have nothing to do with Vernon and Crabtree." Offensive Play of the day: The 49ers had much better success in the two-minute drill this morning. Smith hit Zeigler for a 31-yard touchdown pass after the offensive line and running back Frank Gore provided solid protection against a blitz. Defensive Play of the day: Safety Reggie Smith ranged from the middle of the field to the left sideline to make a leaping interception of a Smith pass intended for tight end Delanie Walker during an 11-on-11 session. Injury report: Tight end Vernon Davis (right knee strain), out since Aug. 15, did some stretching on a side field. He is listed as day-to-day. . . . Receiver Michael Crabtree (neck strain) ran routes in individual portion of practice. But he has not practiced in 11-on-11 drills since Aug. 11. . . . Defensive lineman Ray McDonald (general soreness) did not practice. . . . Offensive lineman Adam Snyder (concussion), tight end Nate Byham (sick) and linebacker Brandon Long (knee) did not practice for the second day in a row. . . . Receiver/return man Kyle Williams (big toe sprain), injured Aug. 15, will be re-evaluated after two weeks. . . . Cornerback Will James (ankle), out since Aug. 15, is out 4 to 6 weeks. . . . Linebacker Ahmad Brooks (lacerated kidney), out since Aug. 7, to be re-evaluated after two weeks; center Eric Heitmann (broken left fibula), out since Aug. 9, expected to miss 6 to 8 weeks. Taking it easy: Running back Brian Westbrook and defensive lineman Demetric Evans were held out of the morning work. Returning to work: Tight end Joe Jon Finley and linebacker Travis LaBoy took part in full work. Personnel report: The 49ers' roster stands at 77, three under the league-mandated limit of 80. The team has no plans to sign any players because they don't believe they have a shortage at any position. The 49ers expect nose tackle Aubrayo Franklin to report to camp shortly. The first roster cutdown to a maximum of 75 players is Aug. 31. Coaching moment: Coach Mike Singletary stood behind the linebackers and got into detailed coaching of those players in pass coverage. First, NaVorro Bowman. "Are you playing man-to-man?" Singletary asked loudly. "Then why are you looking at the quarterback?" Next up, Mike Balogun. "Hey, 48, what did I just tell Bowman? Don't look at the quarterback. You're covering this guy." Then, it was Keaton Kristick's turn. "Did you hear what I said? What did I say?" Singletary explained later that zone coverage is played so much in college that those players must break their habits and learn better technique. Tying up loose ends: Quarterback Alex Smith said immediately after the game Sunday against the Colts that tight end Vernon Davis ran a different kind of route and that's why he threw a deep pass behind him. But, upon further review, Smith took the blame for a poor throw. "It was something that I thought I saw out there during the game, but looking at the film, no. I thought he ran a really good route," Smith said. Notable: Reserve quarterback Nate Davis is not wearing gloves this summer for the first time since before his Ball State days. Davis said he stopped wearing gloves because they would often get wet from all the sweat from the backsides of the centers. When asked whom among Eric Heitmann, David Baas, Tony Wragge and Cody Wallace created the most problems with his derriere perspiration, Davis answered, "They're all the same." Quotable: "I don't care whether he plays with gloves or not. I just want him to be effective" -- Singletary of Nate Davis. Next practice: The 49ers return to practice today at 4 p.m. for their final scheduled open practice of the summer.
Saint Elistan 106 Posted August 20, 2010 49ers Camp Report: Practice 26 http://www.csnbayarea.com/08/19/10/49ers-Camp-Report-Practice-26/landing_maiocco_v3.html?blockID=294015&feedID=5936 Summary: Perhaps showing that he is open to using different personnel groupings, offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye had Frank Gore and Brian Westbrook line up together in the backfield for the first time since Westbrook's arrival on Monday. Gore and Westbrook were paired for about a half-dozen snaps. The 49ers had their final scheduled open practice of training camp. The 75-minute practice featured one of Alex Smith's sharper showings. Between 7-on-7 and 11-on-11, Smith completed his first 16 passing attempts against the 49ers' reserves. Offensive Play of the day: Smith delivered a pass about 40 yards in the air that Ted Ginn hauled in beyond cornerback Tramaine Brock during 11-on-11 work. Defensive Play of the day: After 16 straight competitions, Smith finally was off the mark -- but the ball still didn't touch the ground. Outside linebacker Diyral Briggs jumped in the air and came down with the interception on a deep crossing route. Injury report: Tight end Vernon Davis (right knee strain), out since Aug. 15, was on the field but did not take part in 11-on-11 work. He is listed as day-to-day. . . . Receiver Michael Crabtree (neck strain) ran full-speed routes in individual portion of practice. But he has not practiced in 11-on-11 drills since Aug. 11. . . . Offensive lineman Adam Snyder (concussion) and linebacker Brandon Long (knee) did not practice for the second day in a row. Taking it easy: Travis LaBoy, Barry Sims, Michael Lewis and Takeo Spikes were held out. Personnel report: Offensive lineman Chris Patrick (shoulder) cleared waivers and reverts back to the 49ers. The club has five days to decide whether to arrive at an injury settlement with him or place him on injured reserve. . . . Outside linebacker Martail Burnett, who underwent arthroscopic knee surgery last week, was waived with an injury settlement. The 49ers no longer own is rights. Stock rising: David Baas is moving into position to nail down the starting job at center with the absence of Heitmann. It's Baas' job to lose in his competition against Tony Wragge. "You never really know until you get in the game and Baas just really handled himself really well," Singletary said. "He handled the calls really well, the protections, he snapped the ball with ease. So there was a lot of comfort in that." Next practice: The 49ers will have one practice on Friday. The session is scheduled to run from 3 to 5 p.m. Seems that Briggs may have passed LaBoy up in the roster hunt: Briggs has been the primary beneficiary of long-term injuries to Ahmad Brooks (lacerated kidney) and Travis LaBoy (concussion/foot). Brooks' injury is not expected to last into the regular season and his roster spot is safe at this time. LaBoy is another story. He was back at practice today, but the foot injury that kept him out of action altogether in 2009 is still a concern, and to this point he has not been an every-day practice player. The 49ers likely will keep four OLBs on their active roster. Manny Lawson, Parys Haralson and Brooks are the first three. The remainder of the preseason will decide the last spot. Injury report: Tight end Vernon Davis (right knee strain), out since Aug. 15, will not play Sunday against the Vikings at Candlestick Park. He is showing more activity every day, and could return practice next week. . . . Receiver Michael Crabtree (neck strain), out since Aug. 11, has been running routes during individual work at full speed. He will not play Sunday, either. . . Offensive lineman Adam Snyder (concussion) returned to practice but was not cleared for contact work. . . . Linebacker Brandon Long (knee) did not practice for the third day in a row. . . Taking it easy: Cornerback Nate Clements did not practice. Defensive coordinator Greg Manusky used the first-team defense sparingly the past two days. Game decisions: Coach Mike Singletary said running back Frank Gore is "probably out" for the game. Gore is not injured. He took part in every practice the first three weeks of camp, but Singletary held him out of last week's game as a precaution. Newly signed veteran running back Brian Westbrook's availability will be decided in the hours leading up to kickoff, Singletary said. Defensive coordinator Greg Manusky said linebacker Patrick Willis might see action on just a few snaps in the game. Personnel report: Outside linebacker Travis LaBoy, who missed a good chunk of time with a concussion, will suit up and play. He is in competition for one of the team's backup spots behind presumptive starters Parys Haralson and Manny Lawson. QB rotation: Nate Davis might enter the game in the first half after starter Alex Smith gets his allotment of playing time, Singletary said. But the final decision has yet to be made. If backup David Carr enters the game second, he would not see as much playing time as in the 49ers' first exhibition game. Return game: The 49ers want to see Dominique Zeigler and Bobby Guillory gets some action as punt returners. Singletary said it is less imperative that sees veteran Ted Ginn in action. "I know what Ginn can do," Singletary said. Notable: Rookie safety Taylor Mays will wear the green dot on his helmet again, signifying he is outfitted with the radio device to receive calls from the sideline. Safety Dashon Goldson handles the play calls for the starting unit. Quotable: "Yes, I am. I'm looking forward to him getting reps and responding to technique, getting him in a real game and seeing how instinctive he is" -- Singletary on rookie inside linebacker NaVorro Bowman, who is scheduled to extensive playing time after sitting out the exhibition opener with a shoulder injury. Next practice: The 49ers have a short walk-through practice scheduled for Saturday. The 49ers play the Minnesota Vikings at Candlestick Park on Sunday in a 5 p.m. game televised nationally on NBC. Willis blasted into Favre and threw him for a 10-yard loss. On third-and-23, the Vikings called a draw play and Favre's night was over. Willis played nine snaps and he recorded four tackles during that time. Matt Wilhelm replaced him. Manny Lawson stopped Adrian Peterson for a 3-yard loss to set up that play in which Willis sacked Favre. On the Vikings' second possession, Tarvaris Jackson played quarterback. After five plays, Willis, Justin Smith, Michael Lewis and Parys Haralson exited the game for the 49ers. The Vikings went on to drive 50 yards and scored a field goal. On the drive, Smith completed 5 of 6 passes for 59 yards. He connected on all three of his third-down passes to keep the drive alive. Anthony Dixon capped the drive with a 4-yard touchdown run. But things did not come easy for Dixon and the offense the rest of the way. He finished the first half with just 20 yards on 12 carries. Smith completed 9 of 13 passes in the first half for 88 yards. It was a good first half for Dominique Zeigler, who seemed to strengthen his hold on a roster spot with two third-down catches. Zeigler entered as the No. 3 receiver ahead of Jason Hill, who did not see any action from scrimmage in the first half. Also, rookie tight end Nate Byham caught a pass and appeared to do well as a blocker. His early entrance in the game bodes well for his future. Smith took every snap at quarterback in the first half. The 49ers led 7-3 after the first 30 minutes. Saint Elistan 106 Posted August 23, 2010 Davis #7 to Ginn. 60 yard gain. 65 yards in the air. Wow! What an arm. I'd give anything to see Davis against starters. He sure can make some plays. Still don't think he's ready to step up past a QB3 though.
Saint Elistan 106 Posted August 23, 2010 And apparently Singletary agrees: Maiocco: Davis' Inconsistency Disappoints Singletary http://www.csnbayarea.com/08/22/10/Maiocco-Davis-Inconsistency-Disappoints-/landing_maiocco_v3.html?blockID=295583&feedID=5936 It is clear that coach Mike Singletary considers Davis nowhere near ready to compete for the backup job behind starter Alex Smith. "I don't think he's put himself in a position to really compete," Singletary said. "I think right now he's competing with himself. I really do. I really like the kid. There's a lot to like about him, But there is a work ethic that's involved in terms of being a quarterback in the NFL and he's got to get it. It's as simple as that." David admittedly blew several protection calls. Singletary said Davis did not show the kind of consistency he wants to see. For instance, Singletary criticized Davis for not being aware of the first-down marker when he scrambled for 5 yards on a third-and-6 late in the game when the 49ers were trying to run out the clock. The problem, Singletary said, is that Davis did not invest enough time in the offseason to learn offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye's system. "I'm not sure how hard he worked in the offseason to get that down," Singletary said. "So when I talk about work ethic, you can't just turn it on and turn it off. . . . The offseason, when we're in OTAs and minicamp, that's when you have to get it done." Davis spent the entire offseason at the 49ers' practice facility, but he admits he could have spent more time at work. "To tell you the truth, I don't think I put in enough work as I should've," Davis said. "Yes, I did put in a lot of work, but maybe I should've put in more than I did." Ouch. Didn't know it was that bad.

Saint Elistan 106 Posted August 23, 2010 As I did with last week, I'll only quote portions that I found particularly important. For the full analysis of every player during the Vikings game, please follow the links. Maiocco: 49ers' Defensive Recap http://www.csnbayarea.com/08/23/10/Maiocco-49ers-Defensive-Recap/landing_maiocco_v3.html?blockID=295873&feedID=5936 The 49ers held the Minnesota Vikings to 193 total yards on Sunday night in the team's 15-10 victory at Candlestick Park in the team's second exhibition game of the Summery. And 48 of those yards came when Vikings quarterback Joe Webb decided to hold his own personal combine with a sprint through the middle of the 49ers' defense in the closing minutes. Outside linebackers Travis LaBoy and Diyral Briggs played well. Seemingly, they're battling for the same backup role. But the 49ers might want to keep an extra player at that spot with Ahmad Brooks recovering from a lacerated kidney. Khalif Mitchell played left defensive end and nose tackle. He's taking over the role that the 49ers thought Kentwan Balmer could handle. It sure appears as if the 49ers kept the better player. 95-Ricky Jean Francois: Started at nose tackle. He got good penetration on the first run play of the game, and was there to clog up an Adrian Peterson hole. Jean Francois seems to be a lot better getting up the field than just holding the point. 54-Travis LaBoy: Entered the game at the beginning of the second quarter in place of Parys Haralson and played very well. Beat Bryant McKinnie around the edge to get a big hit on Tarvaris Jackson in the second quarter. Beat backup left tackle Chris Clark with an inside move for a 9-yard sack. He was credited with three quarterback hurries. 35-Phillip Adams: After sitting out last week with a hamstring strain, Adams saw a lot of action in the second half and played very well. He broke up a third-down pass intended for Marko Mitchell early in third quarter. Nearly picked off a fourth-down pass in the closing minutes. He had four tackles and three passes broken up. Maiocco: 49ers' Offensive Recap http://www.csnbayarea.com/08/23/10/Maiocco-49ers-Offensive-Recap/landing_maiocco_v3.html?blockID=295898&feedID=5936 33-Anthony Dixon: Started at running back. He picked up a safety blitz that enabled Smith to hit Delanie Walker for 24 yards on first drive of the game. Got around the corner to score on a 4-yard touchdown run to cap the first drive of the game. Dixon had a difficult time getting anything going with the ball in his hands. He seemed stumped a lot of times after getting the handoff when he found no holes. He gained just 50 yards on 20 carries. He did not come off the field in the first three quarters, playing every snap from scrimmage. 43-Jehuu Caulcrick: He was the team's fullback for the entire second half, taking part in 28 snaps. He did OK as a blocker, and he also caught two passes for 21 yards. 47-Brit Miller: Played solely on special teams, where he was called for holding at the end of the third quarter. Miller appears to be sunk to No. 3 at fullback behind Norris and Caulcrick. 17-Dominique Zeigler: Entered as the third wideout and made his presence felt with a couple of third-down receptions. He played 41 snaps in the game, and certainly did nothing but strengthen his hold on the team's No. 4 wideout duties. 82-Nate Byham: Entered the game on the first drive. He lined up in the backfield and picked up Chad Greenway on blitz, allowing Smith time to hit Walker for 24 yards. Left the game with a chest contusion late in the third quarter when he was clobbered while trying to catch a pass from Davis. But he later reappeared to see action on special teams. Byham caught three passes for the second game in a row after catching only 10 balls as a senior at Pitt. He'll make the team because of his blocking. And his blocking looked pretty good. 76-Anthony Davis: Started at right tackle and played the first three quarters, taking part in 38 snaps. He was called for a false start on the second drive. He could not hold his block on Jayme Mitchell, causing Dixon to be thrown for a 2-yard loss in the second quarter. Starting defensive end Ray Edwards was difficult for him to handle, but Davis did a good job of riding him out of the picture on a third-and-11 pass to Walker for a first down to set up the 49ers' only touchdown. 77-Mike Iupati: Started at left guard and played 38 snaps through the first three quarters. His awareness of blitzes and changing on stunts could definitely be improved. Did a good job of getting to the second level on a 7-yard Dixon gain in the third quarter. That is where the 49ers' run game was lacking throughout the game. The line did not allow a lot of penetration, but the 49ers weren't able to make blocks on the second level. I've also updated my projected depth chart. Green denotes a change. Players that were removed from the last projection include Will James (cut), Alex Boone (PS), Brit Miller (PS), Curtis Taylor (PS). Saint Elistan 106 Posted August 25, 2010 49ers Camp Report: Practice 28 http://www.csnbayarea.com/08/24/10/49ers-Camp-Report-Practice-28/landing_maiocco_v3.html?blockID=296979&feedID=5936 Summary: Summer finally arrived in Santa Clara. The temperature reached triple digits on the hottest day of training camp. Practice began at 4 p.m. The 49ers worked out in shells after taking a day off Monday. The team spent time in the middle practice on punt returns. Ted Ginn, Bobby Guillory, Phillip Adams and Kevin Jurovich took turns catching punts from the Jugs machine. Guillory had the most problems fielding the ball during that session. Michael Crabtree returned to his first full practice since Aug. 11, when he sustained neck strain. Within minutes, Crabtree made a nifty one-handed catch during group period. Offensive Play of the day: Quarterback Alex Smith executed a play fake, then he fired a 29-yard pass over cornerback Tarell Brown toward flanker Josh Morgan, who made a leaping catch in the end zone. Defensive Play of the day: Safety Dashon Goldson cheated up toward the line of scrimmage, showing blitz. Smith and Michael Crabtree, lined up wide left, looked at each other, clearly thinking cornerback Shawntae Spencer would receive no safety help. But at the snap of the ball, Goldson quickly retreated to cut off the passing lane to Crabtree. Smith held onto the ball, allowing Parys Haralson to get the sack. Injury report: Tight end Vernon Davis (right knee strain), out since Aug. 15, did some rehab work on a side field. He is listed as day-to-day. . . . Linebacker Ahmad Brooks (lacerated kidney), out since Aug. 7, is undergoing rehab and riding a stationary bike during practice. . . . Linebacker Brandon Long (knee), who was injured in the 49ers' first exhibition game, did not practice. . . . Receiver/return man Kyle Williams (big toe sprain), injured Aug. 15, will be re-evaluated after another week. . . . Cornerback Will James (ankle), out since Aug. 15, is out 4 to 6 weeks. . . . Center Eric Heitmann (broken left fibula), out since Aug. 9, expected to miss 6 to 8 weeks. Returning to work: Tight end Nate Byham (chest contusion) and cornerback Patrick Stoudamire (knee contusion) were the only players listed on the 49ers' postgame injury report. Both took part in full practice Tuesday. Eye on reps: Adam Snyder, who has seen action at right tackle and right guard this summer, got several reps at center for the first time in training camp. Extra work: Nine players remained on the field long after practice, including quarterbacks Jarrett Brown and . . . of course, Nate Davis. Personnel report: The 49ers have 77 players under contract. The first cutdown date in Aug. 31, when rosters must be reduced to a maximum of 75. Nose tackle Aubrayo Franklin is expected to sign his one-year franchise tender some time before the start of the regular season. Notable: The 49ers' scouting department is compiling reports during the exhibition season on every undrafted first-year player, as well as those drafted in the fourth round and on. The team is keeping tabs on the happenings around the league, just in case a player becomes available after the final cuts who can help on their 53-man roster. Quotable: "I think he's a very calm guy. He has a good command of the offense, of the huddle. I think our guys have a good feel for him. So I think he's a guy that has been consistent. I feel very comfortable with him as the backup right now" -- 49ers coach Mike Singletary on veteran quarterback David Carr. On the sideline: A couple players had family members watching practice from the sideline. Not that he needed to say anything, but defensive line coach Jim Tomsula reminded his players, "Kids and women . . . watch your language." Next practice: The 49ers have practices scheduled for Wednesday for 8:50 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Saint Elistan 106 Posted August 25, 2010 49ers Camp Report: Practice 29 http://www.csnbayarea.com/08/25/10/49ers-Camp-Report-Practice-29/landing_maiocco_v3.html?blockID=297556&feedID=5936 Summary: The 49ers returned to full pads for the first time after their game Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings. The practice session ended with high stakes. It was first-team offense vs. first-team defense in a red-zone drill. The offense took it the first time when Alex Smith hit Josh Morgan with a short pass, and Morgan ran into the end zone. When the groups did a second go-round, there was controversy. On a fourth and goal from the 4, Smith lofted a pass to Delanie Walker, who had a couple steps on outside linebacker Diyral Briggs. Walker made the catch. He thought he was inbounds. The defense celebrated -- certain that Walker made the catch out of bounds. Chief cameraman J.C. Garcia of Comcast SportsNet captured the visual evidence: Walker did not get both feet inbounds. Injury report: Cornerback Shawntae Spencer (hamstring), receiver Jason Hill (groin), tight end Tony Curtis (quadriceps), tackle Barry Sims (oblique) and linebacker Matt Wilhelm (headache) were held out of practice. . . . Tight end Vernon Davis (right knee strain), out since Aug. 15, did some rehab work on a side field. He continues to be listed as day-to-day. . . He watched practice this morning from the sideline on crutches. He said he is helping the young linemen as much as he can. Eye on reps: With Spencer out of action, third cornerback Tarell Brown took over with the first-team defense. Stock rising: Rookie cornerback Phillip Adams got additional reps today, and he appears to be making the most of his opportunities. After a strong showing in the second half against the Vikings on Sunday, Adams intercepted a David Carr pass today in practice. Stock falling: Hill, who is competing for a roster spot, had a setback with his groin injury. It's not known when he'll be available for a return to practice. Quotable: "I'm getting better with it. The test Saturday will be another examination of where we are against a huge (defensive) front, a good rush front. It's another evaluation process to help us" -- Raye on the development of the offensive line, as it heads into Saturday's exhibition game against the Raiders. Next practice: The 49ers return to the practice field Wednesday at 4 p.m.
Saint Elistan 106 Posted August 26, 2010 49ers Camp Report: Practice 30 http://www.csnbayarea.com/08/25/10/49ers-Camp-Report-Practice-30/landing_maiocco_v3.html?blockID=297763&feedID=5936 Summary: Twenty players did not suit up for the afternoon practice for various reasons. The team held a 90-minute workout in shells, and it featured the slowest tempo of the summer. It was common for more than a minute to elapse between plays in 11-on-11 work. Play of the day: Quarterback Alex Smith hit receiver Ted Ginn with 29-yard touchdown pass in the back corner of the end zone, over the coverage of Patrick Stoudamire. Ginn narrowly avoided running into a table in an empty hospitality tent. Ginn spiked the ball in the tent. Injury report: Center David Baas (stinger) and tackle Alex Boone (dehydration) did not practice in the afternoon. . . . Cornerback Shawntae Spencer (hamstring), receiver Jason Hill (groin), tight end Tony Curtis (quadriceps), tackle Barry Sims (oblique) and linebacker Matt Wilhelm (headache) were held out of both practices Wednesday. . . . Tight end Vernon Davis (right knee strain), out since Aug. 15, and linebacker Ahmad Brooks (lacerated kidney), out since Aug. 7, ran together under the direction of strength and conditioning coach Carlisle on a side field. Taking it easy: Brian Westbrook, Justin Smith, Takeo Spikes, Patrick Willis, Travis LaBoy, Nate Clements and Michael Lewis were given the practice off. Eye on reps: Tony Wragge took most of the first-team reps at center with Baas and Heitmann out of action. Brian de la Puente and Cody Wallace also got some work at the position. Coaching moment: Assistant coach Mike Johnson spends the individual portion of each practice going through drills with the quarterbacks. But this was a new one. Alex Smith, David Carr and Jarrett Brown threw passes to a ball boy at the sideline. Then, the quarterbacks practiced taking angles toward the sideline, as if they would be making a tackle on an interception return. Ironically, Nate Davis was being used to throw passes on another field. Coach Mike Singletary got onto Davis in Sunday's game against the Vikings for failing to make a tackle on a fumble return. (The fumble was later nullified on a replay challenge.) Notable: The 49ers-Raiders exhibition game Saturday at the Oakland Coliseum did not sell out and will be blacked out locally. It will not be shown on live TV, but it will be televised tape-delayed at 9 pm on CW 44/Cable 12. Quotable: "That's been a thorn in my side. He's been here but missed a lot of valuable time with the whiplash that he had on the fall, and we're to the point where the continuity that we have to have, we still haven't at this point gotten a total group together with all the components: he and (Vernon) Davis and (Delanie) Walker and Josh (Morgan) and (Ted) Ginn and Frank (Gore)" -- 49ers offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye on Michael Crabtree missing nine practices and two exhibition games with a neck injury. He has now taken part in three consecutive practices. Next practice: The 49ers canceled their morning practice Thursday. They are scheduled for one practice Thursday, from 3 to 5 p.m.

Saint Elistan 106 Posted August 27, 2010 49ers Camp Report: Practice 31 http://www.csnbayarea.com/08/26/10/49ers-Camp-Report-Practice-31/landing_maiocco_v3.html?blockID=298629&feedID=5936 Summary: This is the final 49ers Camp Report, as the team breaks training camp heading into their third exhibition game. It was a light practice this afternoon with the 49ers running a couple notches below "game tempo." The most interesting visuals occurred at the conclusion of practice. Quarterback Alex Smith, receivers Michael Crabtree, Josh Morgan and Ted Ginn, running back Frank Gore and tight end Vernon Davis formed a circle and spent about 10 minutes just talking after practice. At the end of their confab, they put their hands together like a basketball team breaking a huddle after a timeout. Then, Smith walked off the field to meet up with his agent, Tom Condon, who was speaking with 49ers chief negotiator Paraag Marathe. "Did you get anything done?" Smith asked light-heartedly. Smith is entering the final year of his contract. Condon is on a tour visiting many of his clients during training camp. Both sides seem to agree on one thing -- serious negotiations on a possible Smith contract extension will be put on hold until the conclusion of the season. Play of the day: Cornerback Karl Paymah came off the right edge on a blitz, he jumped in the air to deflect a Nate Davis pass up the air from point-blank range. Then, Paymah made the catch for the interception. Injury report: Receiver Jason Hill (groin) saw limited practice time. . . . Tight end Tony Curtis (quadriceps), tackle Barry Sims (oblique) and linebacker Matt Wilhelm (headache) were held out of practice for the second day in a row . . . . Tight end Vernon Davis (right knee strain), out since Aug. 15, did not practice. He will not play Saturday against the Raiders. . . . Linebacker Ahmad Brooks (lacerated kidney), out since Aug. 7, is continuing to undergo rehab. . . . Linebacker Brandon Long (knee), who was injured in the 49ers' first exhibition game, did not practice. . . . Receiver/return man Kyle Williams (big toe sprain), injured Aug. 15, will be re-evaluated after another week. Eye on reps: Crabtree, who was unsigned through all of training camp last year and sat out the first two exhibition games this summer with a neck strain, is set to play in his first 49ers tuneup game, coach Mike Singletary said. Crabtree will play approximately one quarter Saturday against the Raiders. Running back Brian Westbrook will also limited playing time, Singletary said. Westbrook signed a one-year contract with the 49ers on Aug. 16, he suited up but did not play Sunday night against the Vikings. And Gore, who has been a healthy scratch from the first two exhibition games, will play approximately one series, Singletary said. The 49ers' starting offensive line is slated to play the entire first half. Singletary said he is not certain whether David Carr or Nate Davis will be the second quarterback into the game. Returning to work: Cornerback Shawntae Spencer (hamstring) returned after missing a day of practice. Personnel report: Unsigned franchise player Aubrayo Franklin intends to travel to the Bay Area and take a team physical Saturday morning. Then, he'll sign his one-year contract worth $7.003 million, said a source close to him. Quotable: "I trust that he's a veteran, and he's one of those guys in the last couple of years who has done a really, really great job of taking care of himself and coming in here tip-top shape" -- Singletary on why he has no concerns about Franklin being in good physical condition when he reports to sign his contract. Next practice: The 49ers have a short walk-through scheduled for Friday morning. They have concluded the training camp portion of preseason. The 49ers face the Raiders on Saturday at the Oakland Coliseum at 6 p.m.
Saint Elistan 106 Posted August 27, 2010 For the full article, please visit the link. Maiocco: A Look Back at Camp Singletary http://www.csnbayarea.com/08/27/10/Maiocco-A-Look-Back-at-Camp-Singletary/landing_maiocco_v3.html?blockID=298970&feedID=5936 The Week That Was: The second week of practice was one of the worst the club has ever seen. During that seven-day period . . . defensive lineman Kentwan Balmer left the team, upset with his sliding status on the depth chart . . . backup running back Glen Coffee said he answered God's call to retire . . . starting center Eric Heitmann sustained a broken leg, which will knock him out of the lineup for several regular-season games. . . receiver Michael Crabtree sustained a neck injury that sidelined him for two weeks. . . Vernon Davis sustained a knee injury that will keep him out of the remainder of the exhibition season. . . and receiver Kyle Williams experienced a toe injury that will sideline him indefinitely. And, of course, Singletary thought it was a great experience for the club. "This has been one of the best weeks we've had, and the reason why is we had adversity," he said. "When you have to deal with adversity it allows you to focus. . . . I think our guys understand, we're going to have some adversity and when we do, the most important thing is how we deal with it. We respond and we move forward." The Replacement: The 49ers traded Balmer to the Seattle Seahawks for a 2011 sixth-round draft pick. They replaced him with undrafted rookie Will Tukuafu, whom the Seahawks had recently waived. On his first snap in a game with the 49ers, Tukuafu did something Balmer, a first-round pick in 2008, never did with the 49ers: He recorded a quarterback sack. The Replacement II: The 49ers replaced Coffee with Westbrook, a former Pro Bowl performer with the Eagles. There appears to be a spot in the backfield for both Westbrook and Frank Gore, though Westbrook knows his role. "Frank's the man," Westbrook said. "He's done tremendous things in the past. Of course, he'll be the starter. I'll be the guy right behind him pushing him." Early Risers: Receiver Dominique Zeigler (elevated to No. 4 on depth chart); defensive lineman Ricky Jean Francois (made most of ample opportunities with Aubrayo Franklin remaining unsigned); Center David Baas (all but wrapped up starting role for opening of regular season). Rookie Risers: The 2010 draft class showed up strong at training camp. Right tackle Anthony Davis showed some shakiness early, but he settled in and won the starting job. . . Same with left guard Mike Iupati, who appears to be as good as advertised. . . Defensive coordinator Greg Manusky speaks glowingly of safety Taylor Mays and NaVorro Bowman, saying they have that rare ability to make adjustments immediately without requiring an abundance of repetitions. . . Running back Anthony Dixon shows a lot of ability. . . Tight end Nate Byham has seemingly wrapped up a roster spot with a strong camp as a blocker. . . Receiver/return man Kyle Williams was on pace to be the team's primary punt returner before sustaining a toe injury. . . And cornerback Phillip Adams was very impressive in his debut after returning from a hamstring strain. Camp Disappointments: Let's start with backup quarterback Nate Davis. Certainly, he passes the eyeball test. But Singletary did not keep his concerns about Davis' offseason work ethic in-house. He gave him a sharp critique following the game Sunday against the Vikings, and he let it be known Davis is a long way from earning the trust of the coaching staff . . . Outside linebacker Ahmad Brooks had his sights set on competing with Manny Lawson for a starting job. But a lacerated kidney ended those plans. He's expected back on the field in the next couple weeks. . . Receiver Jason Hill, who enters the final year of his contract, was not able to show the kind of consistency the club wants to see. He has fallen on the depth chart, and his future with the club is in question . . . Balmer struggled early in camp, slid below Khalif Mitchell on the depth chart and left the team . . . Receiver Brandon Jones got injured again, and he was released shortly after getting healthy. Now, both Balmer and Jones are in the Seahawks' camp. Balanced Offense: The 49ers want an even mix between run and pass, but Raye was not pleased when backup quarterback David Carr decided that mix should come on the same play. In the early days of training camp, Carr rolled to his right near the goal line and lofted a pass that Mays intercepted in the end zone. That was nothing too extraordinary or noteworthy about the play . . . other than Raye declaring loudly that the play was supposed to be a run, not a pass. (And, certainly, not an intercepted pass.) Smith's Progress: The 2010 season will hinge largely on the kind of production the 49ers get from their quarterback, Alex Smith. At times, he was outstanding on the practice field. One day, he threw four consecutive perfect strikes on passes of 40 yards or more. He also completed 16 passes in a row during one afternoon session. But there were also times -- arm weary or not -- in which the offense had difficulty just completing a pass. Smith looks the part more than ever. His understanding and confidence in the offense is obvious. And he is certainly taking on more of a leadership role. After practice Thursday, there was an interesting scene on the field. Smith led a confab that included Frank Gore, Vernon Davis, Michael Crabtree, Josh Morgan and Ted Ginn. There were a lot of smiles and a few laughs. The 10-minute meeting concluded with their hands together, like a basketball team breaking a huddle.
Saint Elistan 106 Posted August 28, 2010 Niners-Raiders: 10 things to watch http://blogs.sacbee.com/49ers/archives/2010/08/niners-raiders-2.html Arms race - The 49ers put up 275 rushing yards against the Raiders a year ago, and Jimmy Raye is going to want to test the running game against Oakland's big defensive line today, too. But it would be nice to see if the passing game can click two weeks straight. Alex Smith and Michael Crabtree haven't been in a game situation together since the 2009 regular-season finale. Advanced chemistry - Rookie linemen Anthony Davis and Mike Iupati made an incremental improvement from the Colts game to the Vikings game, and coaches will look for a similar step forward today. Davis' run blocking is solid. It will be interesting to watch him pass block in third-and-long situations, especially if he draws Raiders OLB Kamerion Wimbley. Let Westbrook loose - Raye said this week that newcomer Brian Westbrook was still very much in learning mode and that he might have to pick up the offense on a game plan by game plan basis the way that Crabtree did last season. That doesn't sound as if Raye has been burning the midnight oil coming up with exciting new schemes that play to Westbrook's strengths. Of course, we wouldn't see those new plays in the preseason anyway. But it's something to keep in mind. Over the Hill - Jason Hill had a chance to make a splash Sunday on a long pass from Nate Davis, but he misplayed it and the ball fell incomplete. Hill finished with no catches in that game and appears to be solidly behind Dominique Zeigler on the depth chart. Hill had a lackluster training camp and must finish the preseason with a flurry even if doing so is mostly an audition for other teams. Hill was battling a groin injury this week. Eye on reps - After a hot start to training camp, Brit Miller has gone cold. He didn't see any action at fullback against the Vikings and was limited to special teams. It will be interesting to see who enters the game at fullback when starter Moran Norris leaves. If it's Jehuu Caulcrick again, we may have to amend the depth chart. LaBoy part deux - Travis LaBoy's performance Sunday against Minnesota has made the battle at outside linebacker one of the 49ers' best. It will be interesting to see whether the veteran, La Boy, and the kid, Diyral Briggs, can continue to put pressure on the quarterback. Rookie review - Both safety Taylor Mays and linebacker NaVorro Bowman received strong reviews from defensive coordinator Greg Manusky this week. How they finish out the preseason will help determine the size of their defensive roles when the regular season begins. Mays could see action in red-zone and goal-line situations. Boon for Boone - Offensive tackle Barry Sims finished up training camp with a strained oblique muscle and it's not known whether he'll play today. If not, that will mean more playing time for Alex Boone, who has been both a right and left tackle so far this preseason. The question moving forward is whether the 49ers could afford to waive Boone and keep him on the practice squad. The answer depends on how well Boone plays. Enough muffs - Mike Singletary seemed poised to give Bobby Guillory some more chances in the return game. But he said he'd also like to look at a couple of other candidates, rookie receiver Kevin Jurovich and rookie cornerback Phillip Adams. The 49ers will keep a receiver on the practice squad this season. Guillory and Jurovich are trying to nail down that job. Healthy choice - Rams WR Donnie Avery, Jets LB Calvin Pace and Eagles DE Trent Cole are among the big-name players injured - some badly - in this the third week of training camp. Avery is the Rams' big-play receiver, but he's gone for 2010 with an ACL tear. The 49ers don't want a similar storyline with the regular season two weeks away. Matt Barrows is going to Live Blog the game for us since it's blacked out. You can watch it here, starting at 5:30 Pacific.

Saint Elistan 106 Posted August 29, 2010 MaioccoCSN Gradkowski to Louis Murphy for a 74-yard TD. Reggie Smith was chasing, Dashon Goldson coming from middle of field couldn't close the gap. Hrm. Wish I could have seen this play. Wonder what the coverage was and what position Smith was playing. I thought Smith was doing pretty good so far this season too. Don't plug this guy in on coverage if he's going to be this years Mark Roman.
Saint Elistan 106 Posted August 29, 2010 SF_49ers After a Dixon 1-yard TD, Nate Byham catches a pass from David Carr on the 2-point conversion giving the #49ers a 28-24 lead with 1:44 to go. Sure wish I coulda watched this game. ###### NFL blackouts. mattbarrows Deep pass to Todd Watkins draws a flag on cornerback Karl Paymah ... Raiders have ball on the SF 41 with 1:28 to go ... Fock this Paymah guy. Get him off our team. Two games in a row he's given up huge penalty yards with Pass Interference. MaioccoCSN It's fourth and 9 for the Raiders at the SF 40 with 1:14 left. Gradkowski's pass is incomplete deep with Reggie Smith in coverage. This game is over. Good deal. As far as I know, no real injuries (unless Staley's is legit). Nice, competitive game to give both teams some great video to look over. Reggie Smith needs to pick it up and Paymah needs to go away.
worm 36 Posted August 29, 2010 I listened to part of the game on the radio, but it wasn't much help. Good to see Phillip Adams show something on special teams, maybe he'll take Paymah's roster spot.
Saint Elistan 106 Posted September 1, 2010 49ers SS Michael Lewis restructured his contract, taking a paycut and wiping out the final two years.Lewis' 2010 salary drops from $4.1 million to $1.7 million plus $400,000 in bonus money. Lewis will hit free agency next year, but this was going to be his last season in San Francisco regardless. Taylor Mays was drafted as the long-term solution, and Reggie Smith is also emerging as a starting-caliber safety. 49ers waived CB Patrick Stoudamire and WR Bakari Grant.Injured OLB Brandon Long was also waived to bring the Niners' roster count down to 75. Stoudamire could end up on a practice squad somewhere. The Western Illinois product was highly touted before a disappointing senior year. Gone since Sunday and that's all that happens.
