Saint Elistan 106 Posted September 13, 2010 Barrows: Back to square one in Year 2 of Jimmy Raye's offense Being in Year 2 of Jimmy Raye's offense was supposed to be a boon for the 49ers. The continuity - rare for the 49ers -- was supposed to give the offense a crispness as well as a sophistication the 49ers hadn't experienced in recent years because they had been installing new schemes. But on Monday the 49ers were reexamining one of the most basic components of an offense - how to get the play call to the quarterback on time. Mike Singletary said the team will look at possibly bringing offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye from the coaches' booth to the field to expedite the process. Quarterback Alex Smith said a wristband that has the full array of plays also is an option. Singletary ripped into Alex Smith, Michael Crabtree and the 49ers' offensive line in the 49ers' locker room, a team source told Comcast SportsNet, following the club's embarrassing 31-6 season-opening loss to the Seattle Seahawks. Then, Singletary felt he needed to clarify his remarks in a closed-door meeting about three hours later at the team's practice facility. "The most important things was that we stay together as coaches and players," Singletary said Monday. "I felt that after the game, some of the comments I made were very hard comments, very honest comments. I wanted to make sure everybody was on the same page and didn't leave here having conversations in the parking lot and having conversations in the bathroom, and not fully understanding what I was saying." Saint Elistan 106 Posted September 14, 2010 Well ok then. @49ersPR The #49ers have signed WR Jason Hill. To make room for Hill on the active roster, the team released CB Tramaine Brock. The #49ers also released LB Bruce Davis from the practice squad. Probably means Ginn is going to miss some time. I've updated the roster and put Brock on the practice squad in Bruce Davis' place - assuming he clears waivers. 4 Healthy CBs against Brees ought to be fun. Hurry back Will James! Barrows: Ginn's knee injury triggers a roster shuffle Hill was the team's third-round pick in 2007. His signing comes after Ted Ginn sprained the MCL in his left knee on a pass reception in the third quarter of Sunday's game. He was limping heavily yesterday in the locker room and it's unknown how long he will be out. When Ginn left the game Sunday, the 49ers were down to three healthy receivers. Hill worked out for the Rams and Seahawks after being released two weeks ago. The return game also is an area that seemed deep at the beginning of training camp but has grown decidedly thin. Without Ginn or Williams, the team's best option is rookie cornerback Phillip Adams, a seventh-round pick. Adams handled that role well in the third and fourth preseason games, including an 83-yard return for a touchdown in Oakland. Adams, however, also could see time on defense. Without Brock, the team is down to four healthy cornerbacks with the Saints heading to town. Those four are: Nate Clements, Shawntae Spencer, Tarell Brown and Adams. Another cornerback, Will James, told The Bee yesterday that he hoped to return to practice this week after spraining his ankle Aug. 15. James did not practice last week. worm 36 Posted September 15, 2010 Interesting Yahoo! article - Link “It seems like Jimmy calls plays from memory a lot of the time and not exactly the way it’s written down,” said one of the aforementioned sources, adding that the plays often get garbled. “He knows the plays and he knows the right thing to call, but he’s fumbling through his papers and it’s like, ‘Hey, we need to get a play called.’ ” Johnson couldn’t decipher what Raye was saying during tense moments when the Seattle crowd was making noise. Singletary was seen several times yelling at Johnson on the sideline when plays didn’t get relayed in a timely fashion. Preparation, preparation, preparation. Old man Raye needs to get his sh-- together quickly if he wants to keep calling plays.
Saint Elistan 106 Posted September 15, 2010 Maiocco - 49ers Week 1 Review: Offense was More Effective with Walker Walker played 22 of the 49ers' first 30 plays. On the three drives in which he saw considerable action, the 49ers gained nine first downs. He provided a matchup problem against the Seahawks, as they played their base defense. Walker caught three passes for 27 yards, and he carried on an end-around that netted 10 yards. With Walker on the field in the first half, the 49ers averaged 5.0 yards per play. But the 49ers went away from using Walker in the second half after they fell behind. Walker played only two of the 49ers' final 36 plays in their 31-6 loss, in which the 49ers went the final 36 minutes of the game without scoring a point. 76-Anthony Davis: It was a rough game for the rookie, as he was solely responsible for both of the 49ers' sacks allowed. He missed block on rookie safety Earl Thomas, resulting in Gore's 4-yard loss at end of first quarter. On next play, he was called for a false start. Surrendered sack against Red Bryant on an inside move. When Smith fumbled, Davis recovered it. He was too slow in picking up stunt, forcing Smith to throw away a third-down pass in fourth quarter. Gave up his second sack of the game in the final minute when rookie Dexter Davis got around him. 77-Mike Iupati: It was not a great debut for him, either. Mebane beat him, resulting in a second-quarter hit on Smith. Did not get out on second level with any power to block linebackers. The closest he came was when he made block at line then got out and got in way of Lofa Tatupu on Gore's 10-yard run in third quarter. Had difficult time against Mebane's quickness, allowing him to get into the backfield to stop Gore run after 2-yard gain. 74-Joe Staley: Started at left tackle, and had a very difficult time holding on against defensive ends Chris Clemons and Dexter Davis. Did not drive Davis off the ball on third-and-1 play, and Gore got stopped for no gain at beginning of second quarter. Clemons beat him around corner to disrupt Smith as he was throwing late in the first half. Did not hold block on Clemons long enough, allowing him to get across the field and make hit on Smith as he was throwing out of bounds. Got pushed back into Smith's face on third and 3 incompletion in third quarter. Gave up a pressure to Davis in the fourth quarter. Smith took another hit from the blind side when Clemons got around him. 11-Alex Smith: He completed 26 of 45 passes for 225 yards and two interceptions for a passer rating of 52.5. He had too many passes sail high, including on the game-opening drive when he made Josh Morgan jump in the end zone for a pass that did not require a high throw. That allowed Seahawks cornerback Marcus Trufant the opportunity to shove Morgan out of bounds in the end zone before he could get the second foot in-bounds. He threw high to a wide-open Moran Norris on fourth-and-1 from the 6. Missed high and wide to Crabtree on interception that Trufant returned 32 yards for a backbreaking TD at start of third quarter. He did not hit on a pass of more than 20 yards down the field. The protection certainly was not perfect, but he generally had enough time to throw. 99-Manny Lawson: He recorded three tackles. Dropped into coverage but came up quickly to force Hasselbeck out of bounds for just 3 yards. Played the run well at left outside linebacker, but he did not get anywhere near Hasselbeck in passing situations. 38-Dashon Goldson: Was second on the team with six tackles, but they came down the field. He was called for unnecessary roughness on an uncatchable pass thrown toward Carlson to start the Seahawks' final TD drive. I just quoted our offensive line problems and the three main players looking for extensions. Can't wait to see if we have some improvements or more of the same against New Orleans. A positive start would be getting Raye down on the field. Walker is a great player, but I tend to believe he was so effective because he was basically the only player that Alex Smith got to work with in the PreSeason. Saint Elistan 106 Posted September 16, 2010 Maiocco: Brooks' Return Creates 'Tough Call' Linebacker Ahmad Brooks, who has not played since sustaining a lacerated kidney on Aug. 6 from a mishap with a blocking sled, should be available to play Monday night when the 49ers face the New Orleans Saints. But what kind of role Brooks might have in the defense is uncertain, 49ers coach Mike Sinlgetary said Thursday. Brooks recorded six sacks last season despite seeing significant action as a pass-rusher in only the final six games of the season. Singletary said outside linebacker Manny Lawson and Parys Haralson are doing "great" jobs in their starting roles. Backup outside linebacker Travis LaBoy recorded the 49ers' only sack in their 31-6 season-opening loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday. Generally, only three outside linebackers are used in a rotation during the course of a game. Saint Elistan 106 Posted September 20, 2010 @49ersPR 49ers have promoted CB Tramaine Brock to the active roster from the practice squad. The team has waived LB Diyral Briggs. Hrm. I'm of the belief that Briggs has actually been better than Haralson at OLB. Not sure I get this move other than the "Oh crap...we needs us some CBs for tonight". I'm not so sure that Briggs will make it through waivers. Guess we'll find out. Fingers crossed. Page 1 Roster adjusted.

His first was a blowout loss to the Seahawks in which Singletary -- first throwing Vernon Davis out of the game and afterward giving a fiery "I want winners" sermon -- was the lead story. That game was followed by a dramatic, last-second loss to Arizona on Monday night. Though a loss, the game served as a springboard for a successful second half of the season for the 49ers and for Singletary, an interim coach at the time who was given the job permanently at season's end. After Monday's defeat, the 49ers players were disgusted but defiant. "They weren't able to stop us on those drives we had," left tackle Joe Staley said. "We stopped ourselves. Said Frank Gore, who finished with 112 rushing yards and two touchdowns: "What'd they do? Nothing. They didn't do nothing. We beat ourselves." I asked Gore whether he spoke to former high-school and college teammate Jonathan Vilma after the game. Vilma finished with a game-high 10 tackles and had a key play when he jarred the ball from Delanie Walker deep in Saints territory in the second quarter. Said Gore: "He knows we whooped their a-- the whole game." Read more: http://blogs.sacbee.com/49ers/archives/2010/09/niner-players-d.html#ixzz10BAbNKPR Maiocco: 49ers' Season Defined by What Happens Next After two weeks of the NFL season, we know the 49ers are capable of playing very badly on the road against a team of seemingly lesser talent. And we also know the 49ers can stand toe-to-toe with the best team in the league at Candlestick Park. What doomed the 49ers were four turnovers. It's as simple as that. The 49ers turned the ball over four times, and the Saints did not give it up once. "My mindset is when we stop defeating ourselves, when we stop putting the ball on the ground and we stop doing things to hurt ourselves, we're going to be a good football team," 49ers coach Mike Singletary said. The one element of this game that might have a long-lasting positive impact on the 49ers was the play of Smith and the offensive line. Smith completed 23 of 32 passes for 275 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. He was not sacked in the game. And when he absolutely had to come through, he was up to the challenge. The 49ers were down by eight points with 2:08 remaining. Smith and the offense had to go 82 yards for a touchdown. Moreover, a two-point conversion was required. Smith led the 49ers on an impressive eight-play drive, in which Smith diced the Saints' defense with his arm and his legs. Smith threw for 51 yards and he gained 24 yards on two scrambles. Gore scored on a 7-yard run up the middle. Then, Smith delivered the game-tying two-point conversion pass to Vernon Davis to cap the 53-second drive. The only thing Smith did wrong was he scored too fast. Injury Report: Veteran linebacker Takeo Spikes left the game in the third quarter with a left knee contusion. He did not return to action, opening the door for rookie NaVorro Bowman to get his first extended playing time. Bowman responded with five tackles. Saint Elistan 106 Posted September 21, 2010 FFFFFUUUUUU Barrows: Niners lose Briggs to Broncos practice squad http://blogs.sacbee.com/49ers/archives/2010/09/briggs-to-join.html Outside linebacker Diyral Briggs passed through waivers this afternoon, but he didn't land on the 49ers practice squad as expected. Instead, he signed a practice-squad deal with the Denver Broncos. Briggs likely felt he had a better opportunity in Denver where there are only three outside linebackers on the active roster. In San Francisco, there are four -- Parys Haralson, Manny Lawson, Ahmad Brooks and Travis LaBoy. All four were active for Monday's game against New Orleans. The team released Briggs yesterday in order to elevate practice-squad cornerback Tramaine Brock to the active roster. They did that because another cornerback, Phillip Adams, was iffy with a hamstring strain suffered Friday and it was not known until game time whether he would play. Adams practiced in full on Saturday and he played Monday thus making Brock inactive for the game. That is, it turns out the 49ers never had to make the roster move that has cost them Briggs. Lost someone I really liked for no reason at all. LaBoy and Lawson just got better leverage in their contracts. Let's hope they earn them.
JT 137 Posted September 22, 2010 Interesting fact: Through two weeks, 49ers own NFL's No. 4 defense and No. 11 offense. Not surprising given what I thought of the team coming into the season. Not a Niners fan, but they still look like the most talented team in the NFC West to me. Surprising in that I've never seen an NFL team more poorly coached. Timeout after a timeout? :10+ runs off clock before calling a timeout? No competent punt returner on the roster? High school level mistakes. Absolutely awful. Whatever games they win (and I still fully expect it to be 9, which should be enough to win the division) will be in spite of their coaching staff, not because of it.
Saint Elistan 106 Posted September 23, 2010 No competent punt returner on the roster? Not really an accurate statement. Phillip Adams and Delanie Walker are the teams third options at that position. Both Ted Ginn and Kyle Williams were injured. Ginn could be back as soon as Week 4 and it looks like Williams will be back Week 3. The 49ers were surprisingly beat up coming out of the Off/Pre-season. @MaioccoCSN Did not practice: RB Dixon (back), WR Ginn (knee), C Heitmann (fibula), G Snyder (personal reasons), LB Spikes (knee). Limited in practice: Will James (ankle). Rookie WR Kyle Williams looks as if he'll be ready for Sunday's game. He went through his first full practice since Aug. 15 toe injury. Worried about ILB depth. Hopefully Spikes is just getting veteran rest. We literally have nobody else to backup the position if Bowman has to start. Good news on the Kyle Williams front. He looked great on returns in the preseason. Hopefully he can remedy our continued special teams woes.
Saint Elistan 106 Posted September 23, 2010 Can't believe I forgot to link the Maiocco player analysis! Maiocco: 49ers Review - Offensive Line Dominated Saints 82-Nate Byham: He played 18 snaps from scrimmage and had an outstanding game as a blocker. In fact, when Byham was the second tight end, Gore gained 50 yards on five rushing attempts. Made block on Harper to open hole for Gore to gain 7 yards. He also did a good job on Dixon's TD run. Byham added a 6-yard reception. 74-Joe Staley: Started at left tackle, and clearly won the head-to-head battle against Saints defensive end Will Smith, who ranked fifth in the NFL last season with 13 sacks. Smith did not lay a mitt on 49ers quarterback Alex Smith all evening. 76-Anthony Davis: Started at right tackle, and he played very well in his matchup against Saints defensive end Alex Brown. He also showed some attitude with some pushing and shoving. Brown managed just two tackles and no quarterback pressures. 77-Mike Iupati: Started at left guard. His game started not unlike a week ago, as he missed a block on Brown and Gore was stopped for a 1-yard gain. But Iupati pulled it together quickly and got better and better throughout the game. 99-Manny Lawson: Started at strong-side linebacker and played the run very well. Blanketed David Thomas in coverage, but didn't get his eyes around quickly enough to make the pick. Sniffed out fourth-quarter screen to Thomas for a 4-yard loss. Got pressure on Brees to force incomplete pass on third-and-1 in fourth quarter. He finished with five tackles. 55-Ahmad Brooks: He returned to action after being sidelined since Aug. 6 with a lacerated kidney. He entered the game in passing situations, and recorded a first-quarter sack while lining up at right defensive end. He worked his way around left tackle Jermon Bushrod. His offside penalty in third quarter gave Saints a first down on TD drive. There's a really great play-by-play analysis of the 53 Second, 85 Yard drive that tied the game. Saint Elistan 106 Posted September 24, 2010 Great piece today on one of my new favorite 49ers, Nate Byham. Maiocco: Byham Overcame Odds to Reach NFL On the sideline, 49ers rookie tight end Nate Byham felt the raw emotion of the environment. He allowed himself a moment to soak in the scene and reflect on the circuitous path his life had taken to bring him to this point. "It's been pretty surreal," Byham said. "I realized, 'I'm playing in a Monday Night Football game right now.' This is something I'd been watching on TV since I was a little kid. Other than the playoffs and Super Bowl, this is the greatest stage to play on as a football player. "That's when it started to hit me that this is real right now. It's been a crazy journey. But I'm happy with my progress as a player." Football is one thing. But those around him are much more amazed at what Byham has accomplished off the playing field. "He made the right choices along the way, and he always had good grades in school," said Ron Byham, who raised his grandson virtually since birth in Western Pennsylvania. Nate Byham's mother, Melissa, was 16 when she gave birth to Nate. She struggled with alcoholism and drug abuse. She was unable to care for her child. His father was serving in the military, and he never was a part of his son's life. On July 20, 1988, less than a month after Nate was born, Ron Byham's wife passed away from a rare blood disorder. While grieving from the loss, Ron Byham began to provide care for his grandson. There's a video interview in the link worth watching. Check out the full article for that and Byham's full, inspiring story. http://www.csnbayarea.com/09/24/10/img-srchttpcsnbayareacomcommonglobal_ima/landing_maiocco_v3.html?blockID=317529&feedID=5936 He looks to be the real deal. A lot of fans wanted to keep Martz around but I don't think he was a good fit for us. On the otherhand, Raye was a terrible, terrible hire. Saint Elistan 106 Posted September 27, 2010 CSN: 49ers Fire Offensive Coordinator Jimmy Raye http://www.csnbayarea.com/09/27/10/49ers-Fire-Offensive-Coordinator-Jimmy-R/landing.html?blockID=319139&feedID=2539 The shakeup on the 49ers' coaching staff includes quarterbacks coach Mike Johnson's promotion to offensive coordinator. In that role, Johnson will be responsible for putting together the weekly game plan and calling plays. A league source confirmed Raye’s hiring and Johnson’s promotion to Comcast SportsNet. After the 49ers' embarrassing 31-10 loss to the Chiefs on Sunday, Singletary said Raye would remain as offensive coordinator for the rest of the season. He also said he believed the 49ers' execution was to blame more than the philosophy. But after Singletary returned to the Bay Area on Sunday night, he watched the film and attempted to re-evaluate everything pertaining to the 49ers' offense. He ultimately decided a change was necessary at the coordinator spot. Johnson, 43, spent the 2008 season out of football before joining the 49ers' staff last year as quarterbacks coach. During his time away from the game, he studied aspects of the college spread offense and how it can apply to the NFL game. Johnson visited Ohio State, where he spent time with coach Jim Tressel and quarterbacks coach Joe Daniels, his former mentor at Akron. Johnson played football at Akron. He also met with Ron Zook’s staff at Illinois. Johnson said last year that he saw Illinois’ spread offense as the most applicable to the NFL game because of the Illini’s ability to run the ball successfully. This is why he should be a good fit for us.

I would be more excited this morning if the news was Singletary got fired. I like the guy, but I just don't trust he has the skills to be a great HC. I think we are seeing the results of leading with emotion rather than "X's and O's". You end up with big ups and downs.
Saint Elistan 106 Posted September 27, 2010 It is WAY to premature to be calling for Singletary to be fired. I'm to the point where I'm ready to punch people in the face who continually suggest it. Wait for the bye week. If Singletary isn't our coach of the future, it's best that we tank the season and draft Luck anyhow. Sounds an awful lot like this crap from 2009: I am one of the biggest Jeff Fisher fans out there, but his coaching has cost the Titans all 3 of the games this season. It is time for a change at QB, and if Fisher does not make that move, then it is time for a change at head coach. Jon Gruden anyone? They started 0-6. And finished 8-8. Yes, I know that Singletary is no Jeff Fisher at this point in his coaching career.

Saint Elistan 106 Posted September 27, 2010 They just aren't using Anthony Dixon enough. Problem solved! I love you. @Adam_Schefter In addition to changing offensive coordinators today, 49ers also planning to bench Takeo Spikes and Mike Lewis. Reggie Smith > Michael Lewis. Not sure what's going on with Spikes. Hope to get some clarification soon.

Saint Elistan 106 Posted September 27, 2010 Does Jimmy Raye know he has been fired? Have they relayed the message to him yet? Jimmy Raye isn't alive. The Niners have just been filming a new "Weekend at Bernie's" flick for the past year. Photo Evidence: http://i38.tinypic.com/2lba5t.jpg
