Ryan Grant

Recommended Posts

They're not cutting Grant, and Silverstein is one of the best NFL reporters in the league, so he's not clueless.

What happened is that Silverstein rolled with a story that he was fed from his Packers insiders - a story that was launched intentionally to spur Grant. Grant has been running East and West a whole lot this camp, and when compared to Starks - who has looked clearly more explosive and runs far more North/South - the Packers coaches want to be sure that Grant still has his burst, and not sluffing off because it's the pre-season.

This was mind games, aimed squarely at Grant. If he doesn't have the burst, they want to give Starks more first-team reps. If he does, they want to see it to calm their nervous stomachs.

That's it.

Terrible opinion here.

It was a story to spur him?

A ploy to motivate both he and Tatum Bell maybe?

BS.

Yet, McCarthy continues to give Grant 1st team reps and say they want him getting 1st team reps.

Interesting theory. And it may well be true that they offered him the pay cut or roster cut ultimatum. But not mind games. Im sure they told him exactly how they felt and were real with it. On the flip side. He and Grant are likely to share the backfield, and neither one should be drafted before round 5 until you have a clear cut winner or injury to one of them.

Might not be a theory. IMMensaMind is friends with Donald Driver.

Yes...because Im sure Driver would be leaking such information too right?

Its a theory...and a terrible one at that.

OK.

The guys on NFL Sirius Radio today said they had no idea where that report is coming from and sort of dismissed it. They said Ryan Grant has been doing good in training camp.

Believe whatever you want, but know - for sure - that I know more about this than you.

What you say here fits with what I understand as well; perhaps my term "mind games" was too strong. That's an opinion amongst those with inside knowledge, however.

Well, consider it from management's point of view. I have no insider information, what follows is 100% speculation.

You have a RB on the team you think is overpaid, but you don't want to look bad forcing him to take a pay cut after he returns from injury. So you leak a story about how he looks slow and might not make the team at all. He surely heard the news as well, so maybe it will make him a bit nervous and pliable when you call him in to talk about 'rebalancing' his salary.

Then when the news hits that he's taking a pay cut, you've already established a credible reason for it and you even give the impression that you compromised with the guy instead of cutting him ... when all along you just wanted to keep him for a lower salary.

The problem with this theory.

The story came out after he already had renegotiated his contract.

They reached an agreement with him on August 9th.

The story he might be cut came out on the 23rd.

I'd think that a good motivational ploy would be to have Grant taking handoffs from the second string QB, running behind a second string line...after watching Starks from the sidelines rip it up with the first teamers.

And Starks would get some much needed reps with the first team.....so it'd be practical too, and not just something to light a fire under one of your player's ass.

You very well may.

But a leaked article may have been to motivate him...but it came after he redid his deal and had his salary guaranteed...it was not about lowering his number.

Agreed. I never said anything about lowering his salary; just about motivating him to stop mailing it in - or to really expose if he's lost it.

Possibly...though, heard the other theory in 2 other places so I commented on it as well.

Not sure though.

He looked good getting to the outside against AZ...though, he missed a cut that would have taken him about another 10 yards.

Looks at least like his speed is back.

I think its going to be a transition as the year goes on...to Starks and Green (I like what I see from Green and if Starks can't stay healthy, Green may very well take his spot).
