when the offensive team doesn't huddle and sub players in/out then the defensive team can't change their players either.

So if they get a good lineup advantage on a play, it's smart to stick them with it and take advantage as long as they can

It means that the offense doesn't go into a huddle and get the next play from the QB, they go straight to the line of scrimmage and get the play call.

It's advantageous for the offense since it doesn't allow the defense to get subs in, which tires them out quicker. But it also ups the risk of someone on the offense getting the play wrong, which can be a disaster.

yeah, matt ryan kept saying,"mercedes! oprah!" lol!

but umm, what does sub players in/out exactly mean?

for instance, say the falcons go in a circle to talk (huddle) how would the vikings know whether or not to sub players in/out?

how does that huddle give them information about who they should substitute or not?

when the falcons are in huddle formation are players leaving in and out the huddle therefore signaling to the vikings that they should substitute players on their side?

Players-Substitutions

  1. Each team is permitted 11 men on the field at the snap.
  2. Unlimited substitution is permitted. However, players may enter the field only when the ball is dead. Players who have been substituted for are not permitted to linger on the field. Such lingering will be interpreted as unsportsmanlike conduct.
  3. Players leaving the game must be out of bounds on their own side, clearing the field between the end lines, before a snap or free kick. If player crosses end line leaving field, it is delay of game (five-yard penalty).
  4. Offensive substitutes who remain in the game must move onto the field as far as the inside of the field numerals before moving to a wide position.
  5. With the exception of the last two minutes of either half, the offensive team, while in the process of substitution or simulated substitution, is prohibited from rushing quickly to the line and snapping the ball with the obvious attempt to cause a defensive foul; i.e., too many men on the field.

That's the QB making adjustments to the play. Sometimes they're real, sometimes they're to fool the defense.

The same 11 players don't play the whole game on defense. Subs come in when the starters get tired, or to adjust to who the offense has in.

The reason the no huddle keep the defense from substituting is that the offense can snap the ball at anytime. Which means that if the defense tries substituting, the offense can snap the ball, probably catch the defense out of position, and maybe catch them with more 11 players on the field, which is a penalty (and a free 5 yards for the offense).
