This is where fantasy sports and sports cards meet

Recommended Posts

Kevin Durant and a pair of fanduel founders invested in Star Stock today.

Star Stock is the company I referred to in the OP.

Think about how big the markets are for fantasy sports and sports gambling today.   That’s roughly where I see the card market going, but getting there faster, and moving beyond it

Websites, YouTube channels, TV shows, radio shows, celebrities and athletes will make cards just as popular as all these other forms of sports gambling.  It’s inevitable.

You’ll eventually see a sports card shop selling boxes and packs inside casinos right next to their sports books.

I probably don’t have enough juice to make it happen on my own, but I’m thinking about setting up a meeting with the local casino here.

If I could lease a space there, it would be huge.  The danger is in giving them the idea to do it themselves.  They have a bit more cash than I do, so allocations would be easier to come by.  Stay tuned.

Doing Christmas at my sister and brother just showed me some of his sports memorabilia. He has 3. THREE 1952 Mickey Mantle cards. He also got an original bleacher seat from Yankees stadium. Seat #3. Some guy offered him $75K for one of his Mantle cards and didn’t want to sell it

Cool. What are the grades on the Mantle cards?

He didn’t say and I didn’t ask. The guy who’s the husband of the teacher my mom owns a business with has a TON more. I mean he’s got an entire room full of nothing but baseball cards that he’s been collecting since he was a young boy (he’s in his 70s now). Both him and my brother would probably be able to talk with you for days on all the cards y’all got lol

If the Mantles are graded, the grade Is printed on the case.

It would be extremely unusual for anyone to own a ‘52 Topps Mantle that wasn’t graded.

They were pictures of them. Didn’t really pay attention to the grades. He was just holding them up in the photo. We were at my sisters and he lives about 30 minutes away. If someone offered him $75K for one then roughly what would the grade be? Cause honestly, I have no idea of the price range for that card for the different grades.

Without details, it's impossible to know exactly what you're talking about.  Were they '52 Topps or '52 Bowman?  Were they graded or raw?  If graded, who graded them?  PSA? SGC?

Just out of curiosity. For all the people in this thread. (Even vuduchile who's in the business and I'm sure has amazing stuff.) But for just us common folk too. What's everyone's highest valued card. Prized possession. Or both if the are different?

For me, my best value would probably be the Larry Bird/Magic Johnson Topps rookie card. I can't remember who the third player was (Dr. J ?) I do remember there was several that year with a different 3rd player. But whatever the true rookie card was, I have.

My prized possession though. I was a huge Don Mattingly fan when I was a kid. (I even cried when I realized I couldn't bat lefty. ) And although not graded. I have all his rookie cards (and to the blind eye, in mint condition). I believe I have all of them. Topps, o-pee-chee, nestle, donruss, fleer. Plus an autograph baseball by him, that can't be proven. But it was a legit in person signing me and my uncle got.

I know PSA 10 is the best. As far as the most expensive card there is it would prob be easier to google. I didn’t even know there was another grading system besides PSA (and my parents owned a card shop lol). It was real popular in the 90s when my parents owned a card shop and took me to all the different card shows. They even had Jeff Gordon come by when he was a rookie to do autographs (moms favorite driver).

Has anyone here or that you know. Ever sent something in to be graded. Got it back, broke it open, and resubmitted the same card before? I'm wondering just how legit the 2 companies even are, if you'd get the same grade back.

I have no clue. I have inherited 2 trunks full of cards that my mom had from the card shop days. Apparently they are all valuable cards. I have no clue what’s in there. Found a Nolan Ryan autographed baseball with the stuff though (her favorite player) so I know there’s valuable cards in there. Just not sure which ones. I’ll be the first to admit even though my parents and brother are experts at them I’m a complete novice. Was too young when we had the sports shop to understand anything and am just really getting into it.

@vuduchile do you go and do that thing where you bid on unopened boxes and then crack them open to sell the cards? Cause I’d like to try doing that. Sounds like fun

Good cards, but current comps on PSA 4's are around $40K.  He should've taken the $75K and ran.

He wants to give them to my niece and nephew when they get married. Said it was more than they were worth but he believe passing it down to them is more important and that they’d be worth more in the future. I’d have still sold one though :dunno:

Yes, Dr. J. is in the middle of that card.  Bird on the left, Magic on the right.  If you've not already done so, send it to PSA express for grading.  It will cost you $75, but will be well worth it.  Then stash and hold.  Gary Vee asked me the other day what I thought the most undervalued sports card was, and this card was my answer.

You can also send the ball into PSA for autograph authentication.

I don't collect cards, so I don't technically own any.  Our business owns some mid-level Mantles, Aarons, Mays', and Williams.  We also have a prizm silver DK Metcalf PSA 10 that just came back.  That's around $1200.  We have a PSA 10 Russell Wilson that should sell for about the same.  We have 2 Mahomes rookies being graded by PSA right now that will sell for over $1K each if they 10.  We have some Luka Doncic and Trae Young cards that are also in that range.

Beyond that, the most valuable stuff we have is in sealed wax.  $1100 Prizm football hobby boxes, $750 Optic Choice basketball boxes, and several others.

Things are also getting ready to change for us pretty drastically.  I received an email on Tuesday from Panini telling me that our direct account application has been approved.  We'll see how it works out, but we should now be able to get decent allocations of the hot new products.  So, instead of 1 or none of those $1K boxes, we'll be able to get a whole case.  The margins on that stuff are outrageous.

That's a common practice of flippers trying for a higher grade.  Former MLB pitcher Phil Hughes is a youtube card breaker/dealer.  He recently cracked a PSA 6 Trout rookie, resubmitted it to PSA and it came back a 10.  That should tell you a lot how subjective grading is.

Are you talking about buying into team breaks?  That's where you pay $X for all the Yankees cards in a sealed box.  31 other guys buy the other teams.  A guy opens the box on the internet, and ships you whatever Yankees cards you get.

The entire card biz is basically a gamble, but card breaks have long odds.  I don't recommend it.

3 x $75,000 = $225,000.00

He could have bought 2 PSA 6's for $160,000 and pocketed the rest.  I thought you said he was smart?

Ooh I thought you bid on the entire box and then break it open. I don’t think I’d want to do just one team. I know the woman’s husband who’s co owner of my moms store is a Yankees fan and does that ALL the time for Yankees cards.

Basically, I have some extra cash to spend and trying to pick up a hobby that’ll net some more money too. Been around cards all my life and I do love them I just haven’t gotten into collecting really until now. What do you think? Should I just start buying unopened boxes of current cards or try to get older boxes? Really looking for some advice on it cause I’ve got a lot of time til class starts back and want to do something besides just work some and come home

Bro I really don’t know man. He didn’t want to sell is all I know cause he wants to pass them to his kids. From my understanding he’s had those cards for decades and doesn’t want to give them up. The Yankees seat he just got this past year. He retired from both North and South Carolina so he’s got all the money he really needs. I think it’s more for sentimental value.

But like i said, I would have sold it in a heartbeat

There are several ways to make money in the card game, but you'll have to work pretty hard at it.  Especially in today's market. There's no easy money right now, as too many people are in it.

I’m not really looking for “easy money” though. More like get some cards that could eventually be worth money some day. Like your DK Metcalf or Mahomes cards. Like I said, complete novice over here when it comes to those cards lol

The safest money is in vintage. Especially those who are deceased. There's very little risk with them because there's not many factors that can sink their card prices.  Modern players are subject to injury, poor performance, poor coaching, scandal, etc.  Lots of risk.

I’d need to go through the trunk of cards I have. And it’s not one of those tiny trunks. It’s one of those big ass, old metal trunks. Might see about selling and trading some of them when I go through them

Get the trunk, then go to ebay sold listings.  Enter each card and then you'll know exactly what you have.

Thanks for the advice. Brother was saying there’s guys that go to Walmart and such for the cards but have those little scales like you see drug dealers use to weight drugs but instead they weigh the cards and also shake the pack and can determine if there’s good cards in them.
