This is where fantasy sports and sports cards meet

Just out of curiosity. For all the people in this thread. (Even vuduchile who's in the business and I'm sure has amazing stuff.) But for just us common folk too. What's everyone's highest valued card. Prized possession. Or both if the are different?

Mine is a 1998 UD encore milestones Randy Moss rookie. Bought it for $200.00 around 2005 ?

Put it on eBay last September with an opening bid of $600.00

Sold for $600 on Wednesday, September 16 he paid me Friday morning September 18, and I shipped it insured and delivery confirmation.

Since he only lives about an hour from me, he signed for and received the card on Saturday the 19th. Everything was good until Monday morning October 5.

I received an eBay message from the worthless piece of amphibian !@#$ , saying I misrepresented the card, and it had scratches on the surface. This POS owned the card for 16 days, decided he didn't want it, & because eBay is ridiculously biased on the side of buyers, I had to refund the $600.00  & pay the shipping for him to return it.

Thank God it came back in the same condition as when I sent it to him. I have no idea if he just ran into money problems, or something else ?

I don't know what I would've been capable of had it come back damaged ?

Here's a couple scans. Anyone who has experience with grading cards care to take a guess on what this one would rate ?

http://www.imagebam.com/image/be70b21363287355

http://www.imagebam.com/image/01217e1363287358

I've only seen one other on eBay. A BGS 8.5 that some guy occasionally puts up as a buy it now for $1,500.00

If I ever decided to have it graded, I figure I'd send it to PSA. They seem to have a really great reputation (although I'm not so sure now after reading about the PSA 6 Trout rookie being resubmitted to PSA & it magically became a 10)  I suppose the best I could hope for is a 9.

Back when I was buying Randy Moss cards, I'd look for valuable ones that had been graded by shall we say, less reputable grading companies. There was even one called snaggletooth grading.... No, I'm not kidding!

Even if the card was graded correctly, people just weren't willing to pay that much for them. I'd buy them, use the table-saw at work to get them out of the casing, and turn around and sell them the next week. Almost always got substantially more than I paid. Those were the fun days on eBay.

Has anyone here or that you know. Ever sent something in to be graded. Got it back, broke it open, and resubmitted the same card before? I'm wondering just how legit the 2 companies even are, if you'd get the same grade back.

I've sent PSA to BGS and I've sent BGS to PSA.  Some go up and some go down, and some stay the same.  Different grading standards for different categories.

I have a 1984 Star #101 RC Michael Jordan BGS 7.5 (7 centering, 9 corners, 9 edges, 9.5 surface). Worth $9,000.   I have several other cards valued at $1,000 to $5,000 each.

My most expensive card is a 2017 Contenders Autograph Playoff Ticket (vertical) #/15 RC Patrick Mahomes ungraded but mint condition.  Probably could sell it for $35,000 to $60,000.  Keeping it with my collection though.  I have at least one top card from 1957 to present of every HOF and future HOF player in baseball, football, and basketball, most graded.

My entire collection is valued at $400,000.

Thanks for the advice. Brother was saying there’s guys that go to Walmart and such for the cards but have those little scales like you see drug dealers use to weight drugs but instead they weigh the cards and also shake the pack and can determine if there’s good cards in them.

Pack weighing is bush league nickel and dime sh!t.  Not worth your time.   If you wanna do something at the retail level, find out when they stock and be there to buy it all when they do.  Or, make a back alley deal with stocker or someone in the store.

Lmao that’s what I was thinking. I was like “dam dudes really be going that far trying to find a good card? That’s too dam much”

So it costs $75 to have cards graded?

Dang didn’t know. I’ve got 10 pages of just Pokémon cards I need to send in. Not to mention all the other cards. Some of them have been graded already which is good for me

$75 is for express service at PSA.  That’s supposed to be a 10 day service but it’s  taking about a month right now.

Their lowest cost service is $15 per card and takes 6 months or more right now.  They have a huge backlog.

A month for "express"...are they part of the government?

They are really over-loaded.

They also just got bought out.  Their entire publicly traded parent company is being taken private by Nat Turner, AJ Vaynerchuk and other investors.

$75+ per share.  It was trading at $14 back in April.

I have a Mickey Mantle autograph photo I was thinking about sending in to get PSA graded to make it worth more. I also had 3 of those little Magic, Bird rookies with Dr. J. Think me and my dad sold one years back and traded the other two in for other cards.

Yeah when you posted it costs $75 to grade a card, I was thinking that might be a better business to be in than the cards themselves...

Kinda feels that way.  I mean if a Patrick Mahomes card is apparently worth $60K right now, are the odds really that great that it'll actually be worth more than that in 10+ years?

There are those who think so, but I don’t.

The fundamental difference between today’s card market and those of the past is the level of gambling attached to it.

You can literally pull a $1K card from a $20 blaster box.  The odds aren’t great, but neither is the lottery, roulette or slots.

The card companies did the smartest thing they could ever do by creating rare color parallel cards, relic cards, 1/1, numbered cards and autographed cards.   This is where the chase and the gamble starts.   But it doesn’t end there.  We can put our money where our mouth is and buy a piece of our favorite player’s career by buying his cards.

Gambling is big business.   Sports is big business.  Sports gambling is big business.  Make no mistake about it.  This is just another form of sports gambling.

So, is the lottery a bubble?  Are casinos a bubble?   Is sports betting a bubble? Nope.

Is gambling on sports cards a bubble?  Also nope.

It will depend on what he does with the rest of his career.  If he wins multiple Super Bowls and MVP’s while setting records, then the sky’s the limit.  Especially if becomes more culturally significant after retiring.

Gambling part of cards was fun since the 90's when me and my dad was into it. I see its still the fun of it.

OK, I guess they fell behind a lot in the last couple months.

PSA just opened a huge new grading facility and are hiring many more people that work on the grading side of things.  They also have new ownership by a wealthy collector.

I mean there has to be a limit lol.

Mahomes best case career is probably similar to Brady right?  Searching Brady solds on ebay, there is one for $3.75M and one for $205K which I guess could be considered "the sky," but everything else is $53K or less.   Several in the $30-$40k range which is obviously still a ton of money, my point was expecting a current card to grow much over $60K seems optimistic.

Yes, but the stakes and potential payouts are much higher now.

I’m not familiar with that specific card, but anything’s possible.

The real over-valued stuff IMO is with most of the current NFL and NBA rookies. There will likely be no generational type players to emerge from that bunch.

You can't really compare sports cards to the lottery or casinos/betting IMO.    The lottery and casinos give you actual money.   Sports cards are just a product that right now has value.   It's more similar to buying a stock (or beanie babies/barbies/legos/etc) - it could go up, but it could also go down.

Not true at all. Cards are more liquid than they’ve ever been and the worldwide market is open 24/7.

Not exactly.

But, you can post a pic of your card on Instagram, FB, eBay, comc, Starstock, or StockX and sell it instantly with payment hitting your paypal account within seconds.  Then you can pay for groceries with your debit card.

Our ebay store makes sales all day long every day.   We wake up every morning to a list of cards, packs and boxes that have to be shipped.

If you hit a big card from a pack you buy, you will have no problem selling it quickly via any of the platforms I mentioned above.  Their reach is enormous and they never close.

Yeah that's awesome for you, truly.   Doesn't mean it might not be a bubble.  Kinda sounds a lot like real estate right now, which could also be in a bit of a bubble.

I remember that '85 Topps McGwire was pretty much the Pinnacle of baseball cards after the 70 HR season

Hopefully Mahomes doesn't get busted for PED's...

I made some money on them and selling Sosa Leaf cards back then. That home run chase was crazy and even not fans wanted them to be apart of it. Don't think baseball has been near that big since and nor ever will again.  Crazy and cool times that summer!
