Brooks Koepka's LIV Golf Departure Will Have a Ripple Effect

Quote

After four seasons on the breakaway tour, Brooks Koepka and LIV Golf have amicably agreed to part ways.

Koepka, a five-time major champion, stated that he is leaving the tour due to personal reasons, and there are no hard feelings toward LIV Golf.

This begs the questions: Could anybody else be leaving the tour? Can Brooks go back to the PGA Tour?

It is widely known that Bryson DeChambeau is entering the final year in his LIV contract and is seeking a new deal. If LIV gives him the money he wants, he likely will remain on LIV for the foreseeable future, but if he doesn't, changes could be made.

DeChambeau himself admitted after Koepka's departure that this could be a slippery slope for the tour. If a player like DeChambeau were to leave LIV, what would that do to the tour? The Dan Evans Show breaks down what they think would happen.

As for Koepka's return to the PGA Tour, he likely would need to wait one year to join the PGA Tour again. The PGA Tour has a set rule that players who went to LIV Golf will face a one-year waiting period before returning to the PGA Tour.

Would the PGA void his one-year waiting period? Will he receive any exemptions if he rejoins the tour late in the season?

All of these questions and more are answered on the latest episode of the Dan Evans Show.

Deshamblow will 100% be back on PGA Tour next year.  That is 125 million down the crappah for LIV

100 million for Brooks

Bryson got his bag AND turned himself into a fan favorite, mainly through social media. He doesn't need to play on either tour and could just become a YT golfer who plays all the majors based on his exemptions.  I would guess he comes back to the PGA.

It still screams butthurt that the PGA is implementing a 1 year waiting period to return. Do they do that for lesser players who go play in Asia, for example?

The best card the PGA holds is the lack of world ranking points for LIV. They struck out with the majors ban because they don't control it but they have had enough influence to keep LIV from getting any world ranking points and threatening the majors in that way.

LIV would have to keep throwing gobs of money at their top players AND promise a path to world ranking points.

Brooks has a lifetime exemption for the PGA championship but after 2028, he will not be exempt at any of the other 3 (loses The Open in 27), so sitting out 2026 so he can start earning world ranking points in 2027 makes sense for him. I don't think he cares about much aside from the majors.

I haven't followed this issue very closely.  I thought at one point the LIV and PGA were going to merge or something.  Did that fall apart?  Am I misinformed like a lib?

current but soon to be former PGA commish Jay Monahan made that announcement back in 2023 but everything has stalled. Likely due to differences in format, anti trust issues, etc. I think the PGA also feels less pressure because of all the changes it has already made in response to LIV.
