Mass today was a bit surreal given the events in the Middle East.  Keep in mind that the readings were chosen long ago.  From the old Testament, we had Psalm 23, best known from funerals:

Quote

23 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.

He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.

He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

The gospel was the parable of the wedding banquet from Matthew 22.

Quote

The Parable of the Wedding Banquet

22 Jesus spoke to them again in parables, saying: “The kingdom of heaven is like a king who prepared a wedding banquet for his son. He sent his servants to those who had been invited to the banquet to tell them to come, but they refused to come.

“Then he sent some more servants and said, ‘Tell those who have been invited that I have prepared my dinner: My oxen and fattened cattle have been butchered, and everything is ready. Come to the wedding banquet.’

“But they paid no attention and went off—one to his field, another to his business. The rest seized his servants, mistreated them and killed them. The king was enraged. He sent his army and destroyed those murderers and burned their city.

“Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding banquet is ready, but those I invited did not deserve to come. So go to the street corners and invite to the banquet anyone you find.’ 10 So the servants went out into the streets and gathered all the people they could find, the bad as well as the good, and the wedding hall was filled with guests.

11 “But when the king came in to see the guests, he noticed a man there who was not wearing wedding clothes. 12 He asked, ‘How did you get in here without wedding clothes, friend?’ The man was speechless.

13 “Then the king told the attendants, ‘Tie him hand and foot, and throw him outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’

14 “For many are invited, but few are chosen.”

In his homily the priest chose to focus on the inclusivity, the fact that all people are welcome into the kingdom of God.  And I think that was a good strategy.  We were asked to pray for all in Palestine, and I will do my best.  But...

But I can't get over the rest of the parable, in which the original guests (many of the Jews/Pharisees of the day) were invited but did not come.  Then later, a guest without wedding clothes (one who had not accepted the way of Jesus) was asked to leave.

For many are invited, but few are chosen.

It is one of the harshest stories in the New Testament, and so serendipitous to be discussed in Mass today.  Because while as a Christian I welcome any and all Palestinians to change their ways, I hold out no hope for Hamas or many of the inhabitants there.  They have chosen their path, and may God have mercy on their souls.
