....This is the Siria Valley, a cluster of villages about 80 miles north of the capital, Tegucigalpa, in .....central Honduras. A typical resident here earns $8 a day doing farmwork...The valley is also the hometown of a high concentration of people who, fleeing poverty and a country with one of the world’s highest murder rates, migrate to San Francisco, where they ultimately sell drugs, according to an 18-month investigation by The Chronicle.....But in San Francisco, more than 200 Honduran migrants have been charged with drug dealing since 2022, the investigation found. This number does not include Honduran dealers who were convicted in previous cases or others who have never been arrested.....others who sell drugs successfully told The Chronicle they can make as much as $350,000 a year — or even more if they help run a local operation. At least some of that money is sent back to the valley’s villages, where it is fueling a real estate boom.....

....The dealers, some of whom refer to themselves as “Hondos,” are one of many groups selling drugs in the Bay Area. But they began dominating the open-air drug markets in the Tenderloin and South of Market neighborhoods during the pandemic, so much so that some dealers complain that the presence of too many countrymen cuts into their earnings.....While these migrants from Honduras are the street dealers, the narcotics they sell come from Mexico, produced and controlled by the Sinaloa and Jalisco New Generation cartels, which ferry them up the West Coast.....Those drugs include fentanyl, the cheap, highly addictive synthetic opioid that is driving the current record pace of overdose deaths in San Francisco. Overdoses fueled by the drug have claimed more than 2,200 lives since 2020 — 346 in 2023 as of the end of May.....The cartels make the drug with chemicals purchased from China, transport it to stash houses in Oakland and distribute it to the Honduran dealers, some of whom ride BART into San Francisco, alongside commuters from Oakland to Civic Center Station, to sell it.....

.....“I’m so mad at them for ruining my neighborhood,” said Kevin DeMattia, who owns Emperor Norton’s bar and has lived in the Tenderloin for the past 25 years. “Businesses are dying because people don’t want to come to the Tenderloin.  They’re ruining the neighborhood in so many ways. They’re poisoning people. … They’re this cancer, this aggressive, metastasizing cancer on the Tenderloin — the dealers and the addicts.....”.....San Francisco’s status as a sanctuary city makes it more attractive to the Honduran dealers, some of them said, because it means a lower risk of lengthy jail time and deportation if convicted. Under the central tenet of the sanctuary law, the city jail does not allow ICE to place holds on local prisoners so they can be picked up upon release and deported. The only way most dealers face deportation is if they are arrested on federal charges or in another city.....

“The reason is because, in San Francisco, it’s like you’re here in Honduras,” he said. “The law, because they don’t deport, that’s the problem. … Many look for San Francisco because it’s a sanctuary city. You go to jail and you come out.”....Six percent of people charged with drug-sale crimes in San Francisco from 2018 to 2022 have so far been convicted on a drug charge. Others pleaded guilty to lesser crimes, had charges dismissed or completed diversion. Sentences ranged from one day to three years, with an average of 168 days, records show. About 75% of the 2022 drug cases were still winding their way through the court system as of March, and do not have a disposition yet, compared with just 10% of 2018 cases.....

San Francisco Business Owner Says He Was Punched in Face After Confronting Peeing Man

....A Haight Street business owner took to Instagram to say he had been attacked outside his muffuletta shop on Wednesday night after confronting a man peeing on trash cans near the store....Peterson Harter, co-owner of Sandy's Muffs sandwich shop, addressed the shop's Instagram followers in a post where he appeared to have a black eye...."I can't believe I live in a city where people just pissin' the street and come and punch you in the face and get away with it," said Harter, whose forehead appeared to be cut open. "The guy just ran off. They're probably not gonna find him. I'm f**king fed up with this city. I can't just be outside and just running a f**king business without getting punched in the g*dd*mn face....This isn't how our city should be," Harter said. "I hope they find the f**king guy...."

...."It’s completely unacceptable that a business owner would be attacked like this, and our office is committed to making residents, visitors and businesses as safe as possible," Preston said. "To that end, we have worked to expand community ambassador coverage in the neighborhood and get new businesses to fill empty storefronts, and Sandy’s has been a wonderful addition to the Haight. It’s heartbreaking that the owner would be attacked like this, and we will continue to make sure they get the support they need...."

.....A San Francisco judge resentenced Mayor London Breed’s brother, Napoleon Brown, to a shorter prison term on Monday in a more than two decades-long case involving a woman's death on the Golden Gate Bridge after a string of robberies.....San Francisco Superior Court Judge Brendan Conroy ruled from the bench in a decision that could see Brown released within the year. The case has captured public attention because of its links to San Francisco’s mayor and prior discussions over potential conflicts of interest inside the District Attorney’s office. ....“Mr. Brown is entitled to a full resentencing,” Conroy said before handing down a revised sentence of 31 years and four months based on Brown's convictions for robbery and other offenses. Brown was originally sentenced to 44 years for an involuntary manslaughter conviction that has since been overturned. ....Brown, who has been in prison for nearly 22 years, could be out in fewer than 12 months based on the new sentencing and credits for time served....

....Brown was sentenced in 2005 following a conviction for murder, carjacking and a string of robberies in 2000 that resulted in his girlfriend’s death on the Golden Gate Bridge. ....Lenties White was hit and killed by a drunk driver after she exited a car she had been driving on June 19, 2000. Prosecutors had alleged that Brown was in the car and had pushed White out of it.....Prosecutors have opposed Brown’s bid for a new sentence.....“We think he was the actual killer,” Ana Gonzalez, chief assistant district attorney, said in an earlier hearing. “If a person throws someone in front of a train, they are the actual killer.” Gonzalez said that Brown has yet to take responsibility for his actions on the Golden Gate Bridge where White was killed.  On Monday, Gonzalez read a witness statement from a man who Brown robbed in the Marina on the day White was killed.....“I ask that you please not release him, on behalf of me and my family. I fear for my life,” Romero Angel Saucedo wrote in the statement....

.....A CNN correspondent in San Francisco to report on the city’s “rampant street crime” had her rental car broken into Friday — even with hired security tasked with watching the vehicle.....“Got robbed. Again,” Kyung Lah tweeted after the break-in with a picture of the car’s shattered rear-view window.....“We had security to watch our rental car (and) crew car. Thieves did this in under 4 seconds. This is ridiculous,” she wrote.....Lah said she and producer Jason Kravarik were at San Francisco’s City Hall when the thieves struck, stealing two bags from the car.....

.....Hundreds of teenagers flooded into Downtown Chicago on Saturday night, smashing car windows, trying to get into Millennium Park, and prompting a major police response. A woman whose car was smashed by people jumping on the windshield said her husband was beaten as he sat in the driver's seat. Police were escorting tourists and others back to their cars in the Millennium Park garage..... Chicago mayor-elect Brandon Johnson said that while the behavior is "unacceptable," it is also "not constructive to demonize young people who have been starved of opportunities...."

SAN FRANCISCO BAKERY REFUSES TO SERVE UNIFORMED OFFICERS TO PROTECT ‘PEOPLE OF COLOR AND QUEERS’

....A restaurant in San Francisco recently refused to serve a uniformed police officer. Police union president Lt. Tracy McCray inquired about the incident at Reem’s California in the Mission District, only to learn of the bakery’s updated policy: “NO COPS ALLOWED.”......“Reem’s confirms that they will not serve anyone armed and in uniform. Presumably, this includes members of the US Military,” the San Francisco Police Officers Association (SFPOA) says it learned....The business even posted about the ban on Instagram, saying it instituted the policy against police as part of its “deep commitment to uplifting social and racial justice in our communities.....”

.....Unfortunately, the chain never cited how police eating donuts while in uniform has harmed queers and people of color. Nor did it explain what members of the US Military, many of whom don’t walk around with guns, have to do with “racial justice.” The policy is an obvious form of discrimination. But because it is discriminatory against officers, the press has had to express much outrage.....

....“We are not asking Reem’s or any business with a bigoted policy to serve our officers,” SFPOA said....“We’re asking them to own their discriminatory policy & and put up a sign so we know not to spend money in your establishment—on or off duty. We took the liberty of designing one for them....”

Target to close 3 Bay Area stores, citing theft and employee safety

....Retail giant Target on Tuesday announced it will shut down three Bay Area stores, saying rampant theft and organized retail crime were making it unsafe for its workers and customers and creating a business environment that was not sustainable. ...Target said effective Oct. 21, it will close its San Francisco location at Folsom and 13th streets; its Oakland store located at Broadway and 27th Street, and its store in Pittsburg on Century Boulevard.  "In this case, we cannot continue operating these stores because theft and organized retail crime are threatening the safety of our team and guests, and contributing to unsustainable business performance," the company said. The Bay Area locations were part of wider closures involving a total of nine stores, in four states. And it came as a growing number of retail chains were closing shop in high crime areas in the region. 

"I’ve got all of my prescriptions here, and I don’t know what we’re going to do," said Bob Melrose, a shopper at the Pittsburg location. "I know they’ve had a little bit of trouble here, there’s lots of security but I had no idea they were going to close this store." In addition to the Bay Area closures, stores were slated to shutter next month in New York City as well as the Seattle and the Portland markets...

'Too woke’: Starbucks faces backlash for new ad in India; here’s why

.....Multinational coffee chain, Starbucks, that released a new advertisement in India, is being slammed online for the subject of the said ad...... The ad starts with two parents, who are waiting for their son, Arpit, at a Starbucks cafe. It is evident that something is plaguing the minds of the two people, when the wife asks the husband to not be angry “this time” as he tries to get his son on a call. The camera then pans to a woman, clad in a maroon dress, who approaches them and gives a warm hug to the wife, and an awkward one to the husband. 

By now it is clear that it is the son they are waiting for. She thanks her father for meeting her and says that it has been a few years since they last met but he still means the world to her. The father then goes to place an order for coffee. When the coffee is prepared, the barista calls for an ‘Arpita’. In a show of support, the father tells his daughter that she is still his kid and that only a letter has been added to her name....

“Can’t they just market their coffee and service to India? Their service is the best in the world. Who designs such campaigns to guilt trip people which don’t appeal/apply to even 0.1 % Indians. .... Starbucks is popular among teens, so it will directly target the Gen Z. Since Starbucks is encouraging it, people will find it posh & try to copy without telling their parents. Will create rifts between parents & children…Starbucks. Coffee is their other product. Main product of Starbucks is wokeness. Supporting LGBTQ, Trans activism, Same Sex marriage, immigrants is part of corporate philosophy of Starbucks. Now they started their woke agenda in India....” 

The ad has been directed by Gaurav Gupta, conceptualised by Edelman India, and features transgender model and actor Sia. The campaign ‘It Starts With Your Name’ aims to focus on personal relationships and individuality. But social media has not taken the advertisement well.

‘Can’t be real’: Homeless pedophile camped near San Fran school with signs for meth and ‘free fentanyl’

....A homeless convicted child sex offender has set up camp near a San Francisco Catholic school and public library — along with large signs offering “free fentanyl” for new users and “meth for stolen items.”....Joseph Adam Moore, 46, was imprisoned for six years for sex crimes, having molested a 12-year-old girl — and was accused of having sex with a 15-year-old girl just a month after getting out of prison, according to records obtained by the San Francisco Standard.

The sex offender has also been arrested five times since 2007 for failing to notify authorities of his address as a sex offender, according to the outlet.....He is now living in a tent on Ninth Avenue near the Stella Maris Academy and the Richmond District library — with photos showing hand-written signs saying “Meth for stolen items” and “free fentanyl 4 new users.”....“It’s not a joke,” Moore told the San Francisco Chronicle of the drug signs while confirming he was a registered sex offender.

“But this is ridiculous. The parents are complaining. The students are seeing this. It’s outrageous.”...Compounding the problem, Moore’s presence has attracted other homeless people who’ve since “since “made the curb their home” — even throwing wild Burning Man-style parties, local resident Nathaniel Weiner complained to the Chronicle.

But in recent weeks, the Chronicle reports, Moore has become increasingly confrontational with police officers.....However, a San Francisco police spokesperson told the Standard that they could not find any incident reports for Moore’s campsite, and there were no arrest records for Moore within the last 90 days.....“If you guys want to flush the whole world down the toilet, if you guys want to ignore people like me, it’s at your own peril,” he said.
