Drafting 1st in a Redraft

Recommended Posts

On the turn at 20 and 21 I’m debating taking one of the top three QBs versus passing on them for rbs/wr.

Reviewing a lot of drafts on Fuzzy’s Geek Squad it looks like taking the Mahomes/Allen/Hurts dilutes your roster.
Amazingly after 29 years doing this i haven’t drafted first but once.

Anyone have a preference?

I think it's a great decision... depending on your scoring. If 4 pass / 6 rush Td.... Jalen Hurts all day long.

1) Jefferson 2) Hurts or next best  3) Wr of choice 4) Dobbins 5) Sanders

I'd go to war with that team.

Nothing should be written in stone. If I were gonna take a QB with a high pick, it would be Mahomes, or maybe Allen. Those are two of the safest bets.

Hurts has major upside, but he's a bit riskier too.

I know people talk down on drafting a QB high, and most of the time it's not a great idea.

However, I don't think I've ever regretted drafting a QB in the 2nd or 3rd round. Usually when I have, they've been a top 5 QB at worst. When I've won my league, it's most often been with a QB that had a lights out season.

As much as anything with your high picks, you want people who are going to deliver. The top notch QBs are some of the most reliable players there are.

I'm not saying you should or shouldn't. I wouldn't rule it out though. If it comes your turn at the end of the 2nd round, and the RBs or WRs haven't fallen like you wanted them to, and Mahomes or Allen is there, I would strongly consider it.

Well, Mahomes went in rd one if you can believe it. Ninth pick in a ten-team league. I took JJ, D Adams, and Stephanson 1-3, and wound up with Lamar Jackson in rd four. I'm good with how it turned out.

Got- JJ, Adams, Stephanson, Lamar, Pierce, Montgomery, Waller first seven pics.

Would've preferred a different Wr than Adams, but I like all the other picks, especially Pierce.

Yeah but getting him in rd three seems like good value

Well that's true. Adams typically goes early-mid 2nd which I think is a mistake with better Wr options. But as the 21st overall pick, it's more reasonable.  I'm still nervous with Jimmy G at qb, but his mega talent should overcome some of that.

I like it, then again I went Jamar/Hurts/Andrews out of the 2 slot in my 14 reamer. Might be a little too risky, but it is a winner take all league.

In 4 pass / 6 rush scoring, Hurts should be going 2nd round. Eagles scored 59 Tds last year (second only to Chiefs 61). Hurts accounted for 60% of those with 12 by rushing. The "tush push" run inside the 5 is nearly unstoppable. Averages 50 rushing yards per game and 250 passing yds... (broke 300 four times last year).  He's also one of the most reliable players - scored between 1 to 4 Tds in every single game except Week 18. He's like having a cheat code to fantasy football. The old adage "wait on a Qb" doesn't fly with Qbs like Hurts.

this team would be good I think.

I also dont mind waiting to round 3 on a QB and take Herbert.   I think he has as much upside as any QB in this draft.   I've seen him make a handful of throws that I dont think anyone else in the league could have made.   the guy has some sick skills.

last season he played with a rib injury and then by the time he recovered, his WR were both down.    he still finished top 10 anyways.  and after the rib injury Herbert didnt really run the ball all that much (for obvious reasons)  not that this is a huge part of his game, but he has that ability and it would have affected his bottom line last season.

given what a train wreck that was for the offense I have to think that last years numbers would be the floor for his production.  nearly everything that could have went wrong last year did.

thats a pretty nice floor.

then you could grab a game breaking WR or RB in round 2.

At the end of the day the draft seldom goes the way you think it will, so you need to formulate backup plans and my option gives you the chance to take a top WR/RB in round 2.   Not that there is anything wrong with this option  but if you see someone you love drop to you in round 2, you do have the freedom to go after him.

I'm not saying to do my plan.  I'm just saying keep it in mind as an option.   you should always have a plan in place in case that guy you love falls to you a half round or a full round later than they should.   you dont wanna feel like you are walking from that stud you love just to stick with a plan.

I'd argue you should plan 3 or 4 scenarios for different possible outcomes.   this way you can let the draft come to you and adjust on the fly.

In the mock draft I wanted to take a WR in round 1 and I was picking 7.   but the only 5 WR I wanted to take in round 1 were all gone when I picked.  so I had to pivot and go RB.  coming in at the end of a run on a position is usually not the best strategy.    If it had gone the other way and 5 RB's were gone I'd have been happy taking the best WR on the board at that time.  but that's not the way it shook out.   taking another WR at that time (for me at least) would have been like taking a square peg and putting into a round hole.   so I took what the draft gave me.

Anyone thinking about Taysom Hill in the 3rd? I'm pretty sure Carr and Kamara both drafted him in the 2nd.
