seafoam1 3,025 Posted October 10, 2023 How do the Cowboys handle this? No way they up the contract in 2025 right? As it is he's a $59.4M cap hit in 2024. I'm not sure if they could cut him and have a lesser hit to the cap as I"m not sure how that all works with his contract. I imagine they wouldn't want to be paying him that much for the type of production the guy has been giving them. Not sure if they could pay him out on a altered deal or whatever. This is old news but 2024 is coming quick. Enter Trey Lance. I have Lance in my dynasty superflex league and this past summer had a lot of trade offers for him but they were for like 3rd and 4th round rookie draft picks. I said no to those then later as we know the Cowboys got Lance. Here's what Jerry Jones had to say about their trade for Lance: Quote ...it's all about having a developmental option at the sport's most important position. "He gives us an opportunity to do what we would always like to be doing," Jones said after the game. "It would be ideal with Dak to have a young, prospective, developing quarterback that could just be in the room." "We felt good about him with the evaluation we had for him at the draft," Jones continued. "We felt good about what we’ve seen, tape that he’s had since he’s been in the NFL. And it’s one that we made the decision almost the minute we heard the name. Let’s get him." Jones said he did not consult Prescott about the move and as of Saturday night had yet to talk to Dallas' two-time Pro Bowl passer about the trade. "I understand that they’re probably on a timeline," Prescott said after the game. "They need to get something done. As I said, he felt like that strengthened this team. As I said, ready to welcome him." Looks like Jones may be seeing the light about at least not having Prescott after 2024 but who knows about Lance. So what's your crystal ball say about the possibility Lance one day in the next couple years becomes the Cowboys starting QB given how Jones seems to have a man crush on Lance? Currently, dude is designated as emergency QB.
polecatt 478 Posted October 10, 2023 I have a feeling that's what they're looking to do. I think back to when the eagles drafted Jalen Hurts in the 2md round when they still hoped Carson Wentz was salvageable. There was a lot of speculation at the time he was a back up, a gadget option, trade bait, all sorts of things. They were simply drafting his replacement. Or making it a strong option at least. I think that's the same thing that's going on in Dallas. The Cowboys see the writing on the wall with Dak. I don't know exactly how his contract situation could play out, but I wouldn't be shocked to see Trey Lance as the starter in 2025. They get two years to ease him into the system and get a good look at how he develops. He has a ton of talent. I think he will get his shot.
IGotWorms 4,058 Posted October 10, 2023 I think they looked at it as an opportunity to get a guy with first round talent (supposedly, at least) on the cheap and see if they could make something out of him. If so, great. If not, and dak is gone, then they’ll still be able to look for a replacement through the draft, trade or free agency. So I wouldn’t say Lance is *the* plan, but rather a potential option that they’re hoping may pan out.

A 4th for that level of raw talent? Gotta give the Cowboys credit, I'm surprised it took a team that long to make that move. It's not like the dude is a bad egg or anything. He just needs to be healthy and have a chance to show if he's for real or not.

JagFan 164 Posted October 11, 2023 If Dak isn’t the future in Dallas, they’ll draft the future in next years draft. Lance is what he is…a dart throw that hasn’t materialized into a NFL QB to this point.

So they will probably finish with 7-8 wins this year if not more, which will put them out of the range of the top QBs in the draft. Taking a chance on Lance is not unwise in the least. Dude has barely had a chance to play due to injuries. And he wasn't the type of QB that fit the 49ers. I think Lance gets a shot over any possible rookie if Prescott does indeed get let go in 2025. MDC 7,428 Posted October 11, 2023 I think there’s some overreaction to the Cowboys game last week. Dallas is a lock for 10 or more wins and they’re arguably a Top 5 team, they just ran into a buzz saw. There’s still a path to a SB for them. Maybe McCaffrey gets hurt again? Maybe the Eagles bump off the Niners and Dallas doesn’t need to worry about them? My guess is Dallas extends Dak on a far more reasonable deal. I remember the early 2000s Quincy Carter QB carousel years well and can’t see Jerry Jones signing up for another decade of that at his age. Trey is purely a dart throw.

The Eagles lost to the Commanders last year. The Texans took the Chiefs to OT. Dallas is undoubtedly a Top 10 team and probably closer to Top 5.
