Last weekend we spent 3 days in New Paltz in the Catskills/Hudson River Valley area, on the tail end of visiting our daughter in NYC. Hit up a winery, two distilleries, and a cider mill (Brooklyn Cider; my wife joined a club and our first shipment is on the way). Did an awesome hike in the Minnewaska State Park. https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/new-york/gertrudes-nose-trail It was fairly challenging but had miles of views along a cliffs edge. On a related note, I wouldn't recommend it for people who fear heights. Also walked over and back on the Hudson River pedestrian bridge and had some delicious meals. Fall colors weren't in full display but there was enough to please us desert rats. All told, a great time.

I thought you were closer to NYC, but great that you are away from that rat race. My wife might retire in a few years, and we'll probably look into a place near the city for a summer, to be by our daughter. I like it's proximity to I-84, which gives easy access to Wilkes Barre and Boston, my two old haunts. Would like more lakes tho.

There are more lakes further north and you have lake George which is about an hour outside of Albany. The Berkshires are real nice and go into Massachusetts. I’m about a half hour south of new paltz.
