MIT president says she 'cannot support' proposal to adopt Trump priorities for funding benefits

WASHINGTON -- WASHINGTON (AP) — The president of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology said Friday she “cannot support” a White House proposal that asks MIT and eight other universities to adopt President Donald Trump's political agenda in exchange for favorable access to federal funding.

MIT is among the first to express forceful views either in favor of or against an agreement the White House billed as providing “multiple positive benefits,” including “substantial and meaningful federal grants.” Leaders of the University of Texas system said they were honored its flagship university in Austin was invited, but most other campuses have remained silent as they review the document.

In a letter to Trump administration officials, MIT President Sally Kornbluth said MIT disagrees with provisions of the proposal, including some that would limit free speech and the university's independence. She said it's inconsistent with MIT's belief that scientific funding should be based on merit alone.

“Therefore, with respect, we cannot support the proposed approach to addressing the issues facing higher education,” Kornbluth said in a letter to Education Secretary Linda McMahon and White House officials.

The higher education compact circulated last week requires universities to make a wide range of commitments in line with Trump's political agenda on topics from admissions and women's sports to free speech and student discipline. The universities were invited to provide “limited, targeted feedback” by Oct. 20 and make a decision no later than Nov. 21.

Others that received the 10-page proposal are: Vanderbilt, the University of Pennsylvania, Dartmouth College, the University of Southern California, the University of Arizona, Brown University and the University of Virginia. It was not clear how the schools were selected or why.

We'd read the expectations in a different thread and it was so mild, milquetoast, and common sensical that it would be painless for anyone but hardcore DEI advocates to accept. But Universities admissions offices are full to the brim with hardcore DEI radicals that don't want to reform, they just want to camoflage it with new words and  wait for Trump to go away in four years. They have to be dragged to sanity kicking and screaming the entire way. Its a big reason we need another eight years of Vance after these four of Trump in order for the institutional memory of DEI to be extinguished.

We really need to extinguish the liberal will in this country. Erase all evidence of their existance except for the parts necessary to remind ourselves never to allow them any power anywhere in society ever again.

I'd like to go back to how it was the first 240 years or so -- a country that was default conservative and lived by the rule of Chesterton's fence, with progressives being a small minority and every once in a while, after much consideration, we would implement a progressive change, generally for the better because it was much analyzed.

But in recent years we've let the inmates run the asylum.  Now we just change things for the sake of change.  Open borders, boys in girls safe spaces, Hamas is great and Israel is evil, wheeee!!!

Regarding the OP, I haven't read the Fed's proposal so I can't really comment on it.  The AP link in the OP makes it sound like the Feds want schools to fire people who say bad things about Charlie Kirk.  I would not support that, but the AP leans left so I don't know how accurate it is.

The larger war that Trump is trying to fight is how to deprogram the universities.  I don't know how you can do it though.  The far left brilliantly and insidiously took over these institutions a generation ago, so now the people running them were educated with Leftist pap.  Whatever is done would take another generation to be effective.
