Trump denies Ukraine Tomahawk missiles, urges both sides to ‘stop the war immediately’

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky failed to obtain Tomahawk missiles for strikes on Russia from a meeting with Donald Trump on Friday, with the US president later calling for both sides to cease fighting and accept current battle lines.

Zelensky had traveled to Washington hoping to receive the long-range cruise missiles, which he believes could deliver a decisive blow to the Kremlin’s war economy by enabling targeted strikes on oil and energy facilities deep inside Russia.

However, during opening remarks at a White House working lunch, Trump expressed hopes to resolve the war “without thinking about Tomahawks,” adding that the weapon is one America “needs.”

Seeing as Putin does whatever he wants now it’s a safe bet he would have done this with Taco in charge. Putin literally drops the moment he hangs up the phone with Dementia Don.

Now Taco Don might not have done anything in response and Russia take all of Ukraine but we’ll never know.

I believe that Trump, like Biden before him, is wrong here. Giving these missiles to Ukraine will not escalate the war; it will force Putin to get serious about a peace deal. Right now Putin is not serious; in his phone call with Trump last week he once again demanded full control of the same territory he has failed to seize through arms, just as he did three months ago.

It’s important to note that, under pressure from Trump, Zelenskyy has already made a major concession: he is willing to accept peace based on freezing the current military situation. That means, effectively, giving up most of eastern Ukraine permanently to Russia. 

But he will not agree to give up the rest of Donbas, the main engine of Ukraine’s economy and the land Putin really wants and has failed to seize militarily.

Actually, at Munich,  Chamberlain simply agreed to give up the Sudetenland without even consulting Czechoslovakia; he only informed them a few hours later. So at this point I’m inclined to disagree with you. Trump hasn’t gone that far (at least not yet.) We are still in the summer of 1938 in terms of the timeline analogy. We haven’t gotten to fall…yet.

Well that’s exactly what Trump did in Afghanistan. He excluded our Afghan allies & NATO. And basically what he did with Israel is he just flat accepted the old Arab deal & put his thumb on Israel to accept it. So I wouldn’t rule out a RU- US agreement occurring separately. That’s Trump’s M.O. to date.

But you’re referring to the comparative effects of a peace agreement. Trump doesn’t have one yet so in that respect a comp isn’t possible right now. I meant in terms of character. Chamberlain deeply cared about the UK, Europe & a permanent peace itself. & he badly felt the pangs of the horrors of WW1. I don’t think Trump is motivated by anything remotely close to that. In terms of character, Vidkun Quisling is a closer comp IMO.
