Live Updates: 2 Killed and Eight Others Shot at Brown University

Here’s what to know.

Two people were killed and eight were injured in a shooting at Brown University on Saturday, officials said. Three hours after it began, students continued to hide in their dorms and classrooms on the campus in Providence, R.I., as police officers searched for a man dressed in black.

The injured people were in critical but stable condition at local hospitals, officials said during an evening news conference. It was unclear how many of them were students. Rodney Chatman, Brown’s police chief, described the shooting investigation as “a very fluid situation.”

Here are the details:

Where it happened: The university told students and faculty members in an alert at 4:22 p.m. to lock their doors, silence phones and stay hidden because of reports of an active shooter at the Barus and Holley engineering building.

No one in custody: The authorities said the gunman exited the engineering building on the Hope Street side. They don’t know what kind of weapon was used or have any other information about him, and are looking for video that could help in the manhunt. “Preliminarily, all we have is a suspect that was a male dressed in black,” said Timothy O’Hara, the deputy Providence police chief.

Chaotic situation: University officials sent at least two incorrect alerts to students and faculty members, saying at one point that a suspect had been taken into custody before reversing that, then reporting around 5:30 p.m. that more shots had been fired off campus close to Governor Street. They later backtracked and said that report was also incorrect.

Officials react: President Trump said on social media that he had been briefed on the shooting and that the F.B.I. was on the scene. “God bless the victims and the families of the victims!” he said. Gov. Dan McKee of Rhode Island said state law enforcement and emergency management officials were also responding.

Latest update from NYT:

A gunman dressed in black shot 10 people, killing two of them, on the campus of Brown University on Saturday afternoon, local officials said. Hours after the attack, no one was in custody, and the university and parts of Providence, R.I., remained on lockdown.

The police said they were looking for video to help with their fast-expanding manhunt, providing only the slimmest description of the suspect at a news conference. Many students were hiding out in dorms, while others took shelter in the basement of a popular tea shop.

The shooting happened at a bustling engineering building as students were taking final exams there, or seeking out quiet spots on campus to study.

The eight wounded victims were in critical but stable condition at a hospital. It was unclear how many of them were students. Officials said they expected to provide more updates later on Saturday night.

I really think going the dark ages thing is appropriate in these situations.  Find him, publicly torture him, then hang him.

I'm serious.

I'd have zero issues with that. An alternative would be to strap him to a chair, put hooks in his eyelids so they were forced to stay open, & make him watch 20 consecutive episodes of the view.

Just because there's been a different guy at the top since February, doesn't mean the rest of the organization isn't as focked up as ever.

Especially when the “director” is busy flying around the country on a taxpayer-funded jet watching UFC fights.

If that's true, it's very disturbing. A government official wasting taxpayer money is something I've never heard of before.

Well, except for Minnesota. Where the governor and Attorney General (Muslim) did nothing while 100's maybe 1000's of Somali's we're committing fraud at an astounding rate.

But yeah, other than those two cases, I've never heard of government officials wasting taxpayers money.

We’ve been telling you shitlibs that the FBI is incompetent for years now.  They were busying themselves with parents at school board meetings and the Russian collusion hoax while terrorists moved freely about.

NYT update:

Mayor Brett Smiley of Providence is holding a second news conference about the shooting. He said a ninth injured victim has been identified. That person has non-life-threatening injuries from “fragments” related to the gunfire.

Mayor Smiley said the gunman remains at large, but that officials would soon release a video that showed the suspect.

The mayor said more than 400 law enforcement officers were in the area helping with the investigation and with keeping the area safe. He also said firefighters had been sent to places where people were gathering. “We have no reason to believe that there are any additional threats,” Mayor Smiley added.
