vuduchile 1,941 Posted October 21, 2018 Wind took down half an elm tree in the neighbors yard and brought the power lines down with it. 39 degrees outside. No fireplace and a freezer full of meat I bought at Costco this morning. If I had digby money, Id have one of these $50K generators. Instead, we took the kids to Grandmas house, took the meat to the fridge at work and went to the movies. Still now power when we got back so the wife is in bed wearing long johns, flannel pjs and 3 blankets. Im quite comfortable in just my boxer briefs.
5-Points 2,739 Posted October 21, 2018 Get some dry ice for the freezer. Should keep your meat cold enough till the power comes back on.

I moved it all to the fridge at work a few hours ago. It never actually froze today since the powwr went our before it had a chance to freeze. Ill freeze what I need to when the power comes back on. Safeway, Save Mart, Krogers and stores like that carry dry ice. Many here in California are open 24hrs. If it lasts too long let me know. I can ship you some. At -109° it will keep things cold enough to not spoil but it won't necessarily freeze them if not burried. So if push comes to shove you might consider it for the short term. vuduchile 1,941 Posted October 21, 2018 700 gas generator and a transfer switch. Boom. I had a portable generator in my garage at our last house. It sat there in the box unopened for 5 years. Of course I sold it when we moved.
Big Guy 1,400 Posted October 21, 2018 Since we live "Off grid", this reminds me of the phrase "White People Problems". Seriously.....our electricity consists of a couple generators and solar panels.

Patriotsfatboy1 1,432 Posted October 21, 2018 I have a generator that basically powers the whole house and it didnt cost $50k. About $700 for the generator and $300 for the plumber to hook it up.
