Portis26 0 Posted March 22, 2006 Abraham's deal was 6 years for 45 mil with 18 guaranteed and 15.5 this year in reporting and signing bonuses. if Hutchinson weren't the highest-paid offensive lineman on his team in 2006 a clause in the offer called for the full $49 million to become guaranteed. It includes $16 million guaranteed and is the richest deal ever given to a guard. Peterson signed a deal is said to be for seven years and $54 million, with approximately $18.5 million in guaranteed money, including $10 million in 2006. Just curious... and I know I'm opening up a window for more bashing.. but I thought I'd at least ask. or are these considered to be not over priced contracts

Does anyone think that the owners would pay that kind of money and take a loss?? This goes back a few years ago, in a book I read, (i'm trying to think of the author) states that every owner is GUARANTEED at least 30 mil profits for himself every year.. Thats AFTER salaries, stadium lease, etc, etc. The only problem is when they pay the big bucks, who gets stuck in the long run? The fan, of course, with higher ticket prices, parking, beer, etc. Of course thats pretty much common knowledge, but i'll bet the 30 mil isnt.
Vikings4ever 570 Posted March 22, 2006 These guys are getting bigger contracts because the new CBA gave each team 10 million more to spend this year.
Kitrick Taylor 0 Posted March 23, 2006 I think Hutch and Peterson were severly overpaid. Hutch plays a position where the difference between having a capable guy and the best guy isn't huge. Peterson's injury history would certainly scare me away from guaranteeing him that kind of money. Abraham plays the most important position on defense. He gets to the QB, and he is in the prime of his career. Solid signing.
Let Da Big Dog Eat 42 Posted March 23, 2006 Couldn't agree more. They are all over the edge contracts. Should note tho that Hutch's deal would become guaranteed only if Sea-scallops matched it so that clause does not pertain to Vikes. But as to the why? My guess is that these contracts were given by owners who are gambling (probably correctly in my opinion) that the cap is going to go up way more in the future than it has in the past and 4-5 years from now these contracts are going to look like a steal. That's if these guys stay healthy and productive. If not, oh well, cut them and wait 1 year and cap will increase enought to not kill the franchise. That said, if any of those guys has a career ending injury in the first 2-3 years, the teams will have a whole new respect for the term "cap hell."

murf74 461 Posted March 23, 2006 both are overpaid and both teams will suffer at some point because of it
kraziness 0 Posted March 23, 2006 They gave guys guaranteed money THIS YEAR because they had the room, it keeps them from having to spread it out over the next few years. If you have 20 mill extra to spend THIS YEAR, you give out a bunch of guaranteed money at the front of the contract, and then they are cheaper next year and easier to fit under the cap... no? mozzy84 0 Posted March 23, 2006 Perterson is the only one there where someone really overpaid for, but I just don't think he's that great with the injuries and all, that just my opinion. Abrham's proven what he can do and what he is worth on a defense, guys like him are hard to find. Hutch is the best at what he does, still young and will be a force for the life of that contract, and seattle would have gladly matched it if they didn't have to gaurantee the whole contract, so I dont think that contract is crazy overpaid as some people are trying to make it sound. pollardposse 0 Posted March 23, 2006 There are cases where guards make the running game...... Look at Larry Allen in his prime, Alan Faneca in Pittsburgh, and Hutch in Seattle (now MN). Those 3 guards were capable of taking on 2 blockers, sometimes three. How many people remember watching Larry Allen in his prime take out the linebacker so Emmitt could hit the second level? He was a destroyer! Hutch was the top Free Agent on the market in my opinion. He's a player that will make the entire line better.
GeminiV 0 Posted March 23, 2006 There was talk about the Peterson contract... in the Peterson thread. IMO, he was really overpaid. No defender has fully recovered from a torn Achilles. In addition, while he was probably the best strong-side LB in the league in 2003, that usually isn't an impact position on the defense. Seattle will have to be creative in using him to get its money's worth.
