Moulds wants to play for Eagles

PAUL DOMOWITCH

3/27/2006

ORLANDO, Fla. - Eric Moulds has a wish list of five teams he'd like to play for, and guess who's at the tippy-top of it?

That's right. The Eagles.

"Every time I mention Philadelphia, Eric's ears perk up," said Greg Johnson, who represents the 32-year-old Bills wide receiver along with his partner, Harry Henderson. "He wants to go to Philadelphia. He really feels he could help them. He loves the idea of being an Eagle and playing with Donovan [McNabb]."

Moulds wants out of Buffalo, and the Bills, who will have to pay him $7.1 million in salary and bonuses this year if he's on the team, are only too happy to oblige him. They have put the word out that he can be had for a second-day pick in next month's draft.

But don't start visualizing him in an Eagles uniform quite yet.

Johnson said he talked to Eagles president Joe Banner last week. He said there is "some interest" in Moulds by the Eagles, which an organization source also acknowledged.

But as much as Moulds would love to catch passes from McNabb, he is not interested in doing it for free, or anything close to free.

According to a source from one of the five teams on Moulds' wish list, which also includes New Eng-land, Seattle, Kansas City and Denver, the wide receiver is looking for a contract similar to the one Isaac Bruce signed with the St. Louis Rams 2 weeks ago.

Bruce, who is a year older than Moulds, signed a 3-year, $15 million contract with the Rams on March 10. He had been released by the team a few days earlier, before the league agreed to a new labor extension with the players that significantly increased the salary cap.

Moulds has as much chance of getting a $5 million-a-year deal from the Eagles as Saddam Hussein does of getting an acquittal. Whether he'll get it from anyone else remains to be seen.

"Right now, the money aspect is out of whack," said one league general manager. "If he wants to get traded, he's going to have to come to grips that he's not going to get that. Or maybe he will. Maybe there's a team that's willing to pay him that."

One league source indicated that there may be - the Houston Texans. But the Texans won just two games last season, which isn't exactly a great place for a wideout with Super Bowl aspirations and a ticking biological clock to go.

Johnson confirmed that the Texans have expressed interest in Moulds. "They're very interested," he said. "There are other teams in the mix as well. We're going to play it by ear. We'll see what happens."

Since catching 100 passes for 1,292 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2002, Moulds' pass-catching production has dropped off significantly. He has just 10 touchdown catches and has averaged only 77.6 catches per year the last three seasons, though the poor offensive talent around him, particularly at quarterback, has had more than a little to do with that.

Johnson said Moulds has spoken recently with McNabb. He said the two have been friends for 5 or 6 years.

"Eric would like nothing better than to play with Donovan," he said. "He said he was looking forward to going out to Arizona and training with him [if he's traded to the Eagles]."

This would be a great move for the Eagles. He still can play.Last year was only a bad season for one reason,J.P.Loserman.When Holcomb was in Moulds did very well. And he would provide the veteran leadership at the WR position.

Well no way he goes to Seattle unless something happens with Burleson and they are not able to sign him or there is a serious injury to Jackson/Engram that no one knows about.

What does Seattle have to do with Philly and Moulds?

T.O. whined like a little girl to get out of Baltimore to Philly because he wanted a brotha as a quarterback. He got what he wanted, signed to contract he wanted, and then acted like a little ######. T.O. is a punk. He got what he deserved from Philly...the boot.

Moulds on the otherhand would be a nice addition for the Eagles. Isn't he in line for his good year too? McNabb/Moulds sounds like a good connection to me.

NO DEAL

I know.

They should go out and overpay for OK players or vets way past their prime.

Maybe Deion Sanders and Bruce Smith are available.

How many millions of dollars has Dan Snyder overspent since he's been the 'skins owner?

And how many playoff wins has it gotten him?

Thank you Dan Snyder. Just because you want to sign him for 5 years and 36milllion doesn't give you the right to come on this bored and say the things you have. This is tampering. Why don't you stop overpaying people and save for a SB ticket cause that's the only way you'll get there soon.

P.S. Take some hog and diesel fans with you too cause they are long suffering and they deserve the award for " best blind loyalty in a losing franchise."

P.S.S. Thanks for paying Trotter all that loot. It made him happy to come back here for cheap!

Philly needs to step up here and rework that deal for Moulds. He's not a trouble maker, just a guy looking for a better situation and a chance to win....and a QB who can actually play. i dont blame him for wanting out there in Buffalo. If Philly can suck it up and rework his deal to keep it simple like Bruce's contract in the ballpark of $5mil/, than that would be money well spent imo. They dont really have a proven possession WR nor a legit #1. Brown and Lewis would make a nice #2/slot tandem, but neither is going to be a money man in the crunch time when you need a big catch next season. Brown could be that in time, but pairing him with Moulds would be solid. Pinkston cant be considered a #1, and if they start him over Brown imo theyd be making a mistake. personally, I hope NE lands Moulds, but if Philly has a shot, they need to get this done.

It would really help moulds' value to be playing with the eagles, it would also help mcnabbs, they have nothing at receiver right now.

The have to overpay Moulds to save face in public relations for being cheap. And I don't think they are too excited to pay big bucks to an older receiver.

And contrast that to the Eagles not wanting to pay big bucks to another older receiver in Owens. Life is funny.

I think Moulds is using the Eagles as leverage. And the Eagles are using this as "See, we are willing to sign top players, despite the contract not being below market value. Too bad Moulds went somewhere else".

But then again, I am cynical.

here's an article from the same guy - read closely and eagles management is claiming they have spent the 2nd most amount of money over the last 7 years behind only the redskins...

SQUAWK IS CHEAP

By PAUL DOMOWITCH pdomo@aol.com

ORLANDO, Fla. -

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and so too, apparently, are NFL offseason remodeling projects.

Two-and-a-half weeks into the free-agency signing period, the Eagles feel pretty good about what they've accomplished so far.

They added a proven pass-rushing end (Darren Howard) to help turn up the heat on opposing quarterbacks. They upgraded themselves at weakside linebacker (Shawn Barber). They added a pretty good wide receiver (Jabar Gaffney) who managed to catch 55 passes last year playing for the Houston Texans, a team that gave up 68 sacks and finished 30th in the league in passing. They added another pass-catching option at tight end (Matt Schobel), and re-signed right tackle Jon Runyan. And they went out and bought a much better quarterback insurance policy (Jeff Garcia) than they had last year with Who's On First (Mike McMahon) and What's On Second (Koy Detmer).

But that's not the tune that is being played by some of the local sports-talk gabbers. And that's not the tune that is being played by many angry e-mail-writing fans, who are convinced that this organization cares much more about maximizing profits than winning Super Bowls.

The Eagles don't want to give Eric Moulds a $5 million-a-year contract, so they must be cheap. They don't want to open their vault to LaVar Arrington, so they must be cheap. They let Pro Bowl center LeCharles Bentley slip away from them and sign with Cleveland, so they must be cheap. They are $10 trillion under the salary cap, so they definitely must be cheap.

Owner Jeff Lurie and club president Joe Banner have been hearing this cheapskate talk for a long time. Even when the team was winning four straight division titles and earning four straight trips to the NFC Championship Game, people were accusing them of being penny pinchers. Now that they're coming off a 6-10 season, it's much easier to pile on.

But Banner says there's one tiny, little problem with the criticism: It's not really true.

He points out that, in the 7 years since Andy Reid was hired as head coach, the Eagles are second in the NFL in cash spent on players. The only team that's spent more during that period, according to Banner, is the Washington Redskins.

He also points out that, while you may not be crazy about the free agents they've signed this month, the Eagles are "among the highest spenders of [salary] cap dollars in the NFL this year.

"People can say whatever they want or make it whatever they want," Banner said. "But the reality is we've been in the market for players that we felt were in a position to improve our team. And we'll continue to be in that position.

"We've added a significant number of players [this offseason]. Good players who have the ability to fit in, contribute to what we do and help us win.

"You can't be cheap if you're spending the second-largest amount of money in the league. The Phillies aren't doing that. The Flyers aren't doing that. Nobody in Philadelphia is doing that. Because we've come up with some good ideas on how to manage our cap, we're [being called] cheap. That's ludicrous."

The sky-is-falling perception is that the rest of the NFC East is running away from the Eagles. The Cowboys signed wide receiver Terrell Owens, kicker Mike Vanderjagt and offensive tackle Jason Fabini. The Giants have reconstructed their secondary, bringing in cornerbacks Sam Madison and R.W. McQuarters and safety Will Demps. Redskins owner Dan Snyder has just completed his annual dump-and-sign spending spree, making millionaires of wide receivers Antwaan Randle El and Brandon Lloyd, safety Adam Archuleta and defensive end Andre Carter.

"Some of the things you hear people say just defy reality," Banner said. "I spoke to someone recently and they were raving about all of the Cowboys' moves. Well, they lost two starting linebackers [scott Fujita and Dat Nguyen], a starting defensive tackle [La'Roi Glover], a starting left guard [Larry Allen], and a starting wide receiver [Keyshawn Johnson] and they added T.O. We'll see how the season goes. But as far as comparing offseasons [between the Eagles and Cowboys], it's not even close.

"The Cowboys have had some good drafts and have some young, emerging players and it's reasonable to expect they're going to be very good. But if you just rated their additions and subtractions in free agency, you'd conclude that they lost a lot of guys.''

Lurie tore a page out of George Bush's playbook and blamed the media for the perception that his team is cheap.

"It's up to the media to educate the fans clearly and precisely on the economics of the NFL," Lurie said during a lunch break at the league meetings at the Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress resort. "The facts are that, in the end, every team spends [about the same amount of money each year]. It's just a matter of whether you spend it in March [on free agents] or spend it in November [on signing players to extensions]. Are you going to distribute that $90 million or $100 million or $110 million to three or four free agents in March or are you going to [distribute] it throughout your roster and by re-signing your young players?''

The Eagles have repeatedly made it clear that they prefer to build through the draft, rather than hanging out at the free-agency trough like Snyder. It hasn't earned them nearly as many March headlines as the Redskins, but it has allowed them to stay in yearly playoff contention and out of salary-cap hell, and re-sign more of their players to second and third contracts than any other team in the league.

"Free agency is a tool, and you've got to utilize every single tool to succeed in this game," Lurie said. "But by far, the best tool is the draft.

"If there's an opportunity to get a player who becomes available, an excellent player who could have an impact, we have the ammunition to [sign him]. Will that happen? I don't know.

"If you look at the free agency list for this year or last year, there's a reason a lot of those players are out there. You have to make the best decision for your organization. Arizona acquired a very good running back [Edgerrin James]. It may or may not work out. Everybody has to make those calculations. That's why the better you draft, the better you will do.''

I just think that the author is taking Banner's word for it. Is there evidence that the reporter double checked the numbers, or did he believe everything that Banner was shoveling? I very strongly feel that this was very incredibly sloppy reporting.

This was an Eagle's puff piece. I am a skeptic, but this was just too much even for me absorb. My head is going to explode.

My bad. They won in Jan 92 so it has been 14 years and 2 months. That is not 15 years, you are correct. Do you realize that in the last 14 years and 2 months that you have made the playoffs twice? Wow, that is some dry spell. Now I know why you guys clutch that last trophy so hard. It's not easy being a skin is it?

Cheer up my friend. Dan Snyder knows what he is doing. He will save you guys.

Oh I remember this past year. When you have been between 11-5 and 13-3 since 2000 and then you go 6-10 it sticks to ya. But there were numeruos reasons for this anomaly... Like having your IR list in the high teens including your starting pro bowl QB. Oh and how about losing our best receiver to suspension because he's wrecking team chemistry. Etc. Etc. You guys only snuck into the playoffs(and still didn't win the division) cause we left a vacancy. Now everyone will be healed and there will be no room for you guys to limp in. You only won because we lost for a year. The beauty is we'll get to find out in 6 months. I hope you liked it in the cellar cause you will be going back.

:bench: =Redskin

 = Another division championship would make 5 out of 6 this decade. :ninja:

So is Moulds a Texan or what? The last I heard was they would announce the signing today...but its 6:30 pm and no news  .Mabey the Eagles are still in the bidding after all.

Here's what ESPN said on Friday:

Moulds, 32, is scheduled to arrive in Houston on Monday to visit with Texans coaches and officials. No deal will be consummated before that visit. Earlier in the free agency period, the Texans ardently courted David Givens of New England, but the Houston native signed with the Tennessee Titans.

There were some other suitors for Moulds, who last week was granted permission by the Bills to seek out trade possibilities, but none were as aggressive as the Texans. And many of the franchises cited as having interest in Moulds, notably the Philadelphia Eagles, never got involved in substantive discussions. Talks with the Eagles were initiated by Moulds' agent, and were relatively one-sided.

So, I guess the answer to your question is technically "No, not yet." But apparetnly, the Eagles aren't that interested.
