Bass Bugging for Blue Gills

I went down to the seven acre lake down the hill from our house just now. The Blue Gill are on the beds and just slam a bass bug. I caught about 30 (catch and release). Anybody could do it. I love putting on the polariod sunglasses and watching them rise to the bait.

 

I will have to go back this evening with my bass rig and see if I can hook me a hog!

How big were they??? Those BIG gills you can really get on their beds in spring, espessially on a fly rod. LOVE fly fishing for those nice fighting fish. I don't do it too often though, the biggest i got was just under 10 inches, though i have heard of many 12s caught that way.

The biggest ones were about 8" today. There are bigger ones in there, though. The last bass I caught was 19 1/2" on ultra lite spinning. If he could have found any cover, I never would have landed him.

Sometimes you have to throw what they are biting, but NOTHING beats the fun of topwater!

You're right. I wasn't exactly pushing the envelope of fishing challenges there. Sometimes I just want a little action and the Blue Gill won't disapoint. I have a friend that was on the pro bass curcuit. He has fished in the same boat with guys like Ricky Clune. He is so competitive and "on" all the time. I am a little more laid back.

I did this a lot as a young man on Lake Eucha (NE Oklahoma). We would use 4 wt fly rods and popping bugs and catch bluegills and shellcrackers up to 2 lbs. Caught a 9 lb 7 oz largemouth like this. Awesome. Thanks for the memories.

My parents' pond is just loaded with bluegill, bass and cats. And my dad feeds them every night with some industrial type food he buys at the local farm store. As soon as your feet hit the dock, the water starts churning because these fish are so trained. These fish are massive. I could sit there all day and pull out bluegill, but it gets old.

 

What's really fun is trolling the bottom for the cat. Normal rod and reel, any kind of bait you want from dough to hotdogs. They don't strike like other fish, you just notice your line tightening up slow and steady. One they're hooked, you better be prepared for at least a 15 minute fight as he walks you around the pond. We've pulled 5 so far this year and they're averaging around 14 lbs...and they taste great. Not like the bottom feeders you find in most places.
