If Anthony Hopkins had not been Hanibal Lechter ...

Recommended Posts

The late ... Robert Shaw, I think would have maybe even been better.

I do an imitation ... guess who this is:

"Ya knowa ... what ya look like ta me. Ya look like .... a rube-ah. A well scarubbed, hustling, rube-ah."

Actually, this already happened. Brian Cox was an even better Dr. Lechter, IMO, in "Manhunter" (1986).

I was going to post the same exact thing. This movie was based on Red Dragon and was directed by Michael Mann of Miami Vice fame. It was by far way better than the Red Dragon movie that came out later.

I must be in the minority, but I enjoyed Red Dragon more than Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal. Both the movie and the book.

Hopkins was a better Lechter. More creepy and more like the cerebral psychopath that Lechter was in the books.

Manhunter was an underrated film. The guy from CSI was in there, but Hopkins in Silence of the Lambs made Lechter a truly scary character.

Just throwing a name into the hat, he was the first that came to mind. quite frankly I'm not even sure he'd be great but John Malcovich (sp). Maybe even Christopher Walkken????

I almost forgot to answer the question.

Willem Dafoe.

He was amazingly creepy in Shadow of the Vampire. He excels at every weird role he is in.

A little young, but an older Johnny Depp is freaky enough to pull off some weird shiot. He always has bizarre roles.

I've never seen the guy in a creepy role, and for the life of me can't think of his name, but who is the lead det. in CSI Miami? He's got the mannerisms and the creepy  looks tho. Not sure he could pull it off. He's always a cop so this could be tough on him!????

Silence of the Lambs = most overrated movie of all time.

100% agreed. Hopkins is hilarious ... and not in the "campy" way either, just hamming it up and overacting like a buffoon.

Vincent D'Onofrio would have nailed it.

Check him out as that crazy mofo in " The Cell" or as Pooh-Bear in "The Salton Sea"

Alfred Molina( Gown clad drug dealer in Boogie Nights) is also a possibility.

Gary Oldman could have hammed it up pretty well also.
