Madison - Two Catholic bishops are asking Gov. Jim Doyle to oppose the use of embryonic stem cells at a time when he is touting the research as a major reason voters should re-elect him in November.

In a letter released Wednesday, Milwaukee Archbishop Timothy Dolan and Madison Bishop Robert Morlino asked the Democratic governor to reverse his support for embryonic stem cell research, which Doyle has said could boost the state's economy and lead to cures for Parkinson's disease and other maladies.

Doyle's arguments for the research "further diminishes human embryos to mere commodities," they wrote in the letter, which was sent Monday but not released until Wednesday.

They sent the letter as the heads of the Wisconsin Catholic Conference, which represents all five Catholic dioceses in the state.

The letter comes a month after the state Building Commission, which is headed by Doyle, approved construction of the $375 million Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery, a hub for stem cell research on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus. At that time, Doyle also ordered the Department of Commerce to spend $5 million to recruit stem cell firms and help them expand.

In less than six months, Doyle is expected to face Republican U.S. Rep. Mark Green of Green Bay in the Nov. 7 gubernatorial election. Both Doyle and Green are Catholic.

In a letter to the Catholic leaders Wednesday, Doyle said he had to "respectfully disagree" with their criticism because embryonic stem cell research "holds the potential to save countless lives and bring thousands of jobs to our state."

Doyle is a member of Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Madison. He was in meetings Wednesday and not available for comment.

Governer backs away slowly

Does he seem overly worried about the religious vote considering his stand on stem cells?

Religions are split on stem cell use, they all agree on their tax exemption.

Funny how the only thing that organized religions can agree upon is their greed. <_<

The difference between the school teachers and the Catholic Church is that the Catholic Church kept the history of these pedophiles a secret and moved them into new unknowing districts. The Catholic Church covered for these guys and sent them into the arms of new innocent victims. That is a real lack of respect for their congregation. When a school teacher is caught molestng a child in Boston, they do not trade him for a teacher in Des Moines.

Didn't you know those who preach it are exempt from following it? Thats rule #1...it applies to politics and parenting as well.

:( perhaps you should do some research. ever hear of "pass the thrash" or "dance of the lemons".... these terms originated in public schools. some of the things that they've done makes what happened in the Church look good.

While I am aware that there are cases of teacher who were sexually involved with students and were allowed to keep their teaching licenses, the "dance of the lemons" has more to do with low quality teachers being passed around because no administration wants to deal with them then hiding child molestors.
