ESPN announced today that it has extended its deal with Harrah's Entertainment to televise the WSOP on ESPN until 2010. In addition to the regular television coverage, poker fans will be able to watch the final table live through ESPN PPV.

For $24.95, poker enthusiasts will be able to see all the action as it happens with "The World Series of Poker Live!" from the 2006 final table on their TV screens or via live video stream at ESPN.com. Viewers can catch the action as players vie for an estimated $10 million first prize, with live coverage running from 3 p.m. ET on Aug. 10 until the champion is crowned.

I looked on the site - it (obviously) doesn't know. But based on last year's 5619 count and how many freaking poker shows are on TV, plus the thousands of participants that have surely won their seats online throughout the past year, I'm putting the over/under at:

8100 players for the Main Event.

brutal. I wonder if a 'pro' or well known face will even sniff the final table ever again.

Looks like they are planning on ~8000.

Day 1A - 2000 play down to 800

Day 1B - 2000 play down to 800

Day 1C - 2000 play down to 800

Day 1D - 2000 play down to 800

My friend won free entry to the WSOP through bodog.com. If he makes the final table, I may pay to watch it live.

If he makes the final table he could pay for your flight to watch him live.

My friend knows a few pros and he said there was a rumor that sometime in the next few years, the entry fee will be going up to 25K. I don't say that as fact, but he said these guys usually know what they are talking about.

I heard the same thing somewhere. They already have some 25k events on the WPT tour, no? There is at least one at the Bellagio, if I remember correctly. It would probably lessen the amatuers in the field significantly - not only would there be less ponying up the cash, all of the satellites would either be larger fields or more expensive to get into.

They added a $50,000 buy-in H.O.R.S.E. event. As far as I'm concerned that winner should be heralded as the best poker player in the world.

The entry fee has to go up. They can just keep adding players every year.

I disagree. I don't think the WSOP Chamion should be based on how much money they can put together. it should be based (to some extent) on skill. I think they should limit the entries to the top XXX players from scheduled events throughout the year. Have enough events for... let's say 500 participants. A portion of each tournie's entry fees go to the Main Event in June. Then you could have a huge $$$ prize for the main event played for by only the best players, not anyone with 10,000 in cash floating around.

That would kind of defeat the whole "Anyone Can Win" slogan, now wouldn't it?

Experts are predicting that there will be over 7,000 entrants in the main event of the WSOP this year, many of whom may not have ever played in a live tournament.

Doyle Brunson saidthat H.O.R.S.E. should be considered the main event because it is the true test of all-around poker skill

hold 'em, Omaha, razz, stud, eight or better

Not really. Anyone could still enter the scheduled WSOP qualifier events needed to make the Main Event. Basically you have multiple massive satellite tourneys throughout the year, with, say 50 people from each event getting into the main draw. You have 100 events throughout the year, and then those 500 get to play for the $$$ and the title. You could even make it 550 entrants, and reserve the last 50 spots as "invitational" for those that won other major events like WPT or online tournies from selected sites.

is there a blog of sorts giving updates?

I was just about to ask what sources folks use for updates. I can't search too much until I get home from work.

This guy usually has some updates....most of the ones I would check are blocked at work, but this one isn't:

http://taopoker.blogspot.com/

From his site:

When it rains, it pours. On Monday, I signed up a sponsor which I'll reveal on Monday. Then a couple of hours ago, I got off the phone with a suit from Fox Sports. I'm about to sign a deal with them to write freelance articles on the 2006 WSOP for their online site. Flipchip will be providing photos for them too, just like last year. I'm excited to be working with them again this year. I'll be blogging here at the Tao of Poker everyday and I'll be posting tournament updates over at LasVegasVegas.com. I'll also be writing twice a week for Fox Sports along with daily recaps for them during the WSOP.
