Question for those who do live offline drafts

Recommended Posts

Where is a good place to order a draft board. My league's willing to pay a fair amount of money.

TIA

theres a ton out there and everyone will reply with which one they think is the best in the world. ive sampled a few and this year im using www.webleaguemanager.com.

its $90 but if you split it between owners the cost aint much. i dont know if you just need the online draft or need software to run your whole leauge for the year. i have used these guys since 98 to run the whole league. they are nice and have enough options to cover just about any type of scoring/waiver wire/all that stuff.

i've never understood the need for a draftboard... My money league is in our 5th year and everyone just shows up with their mags (except for me,screw a magazine, i bring my ranking list and my adp list  ) and everyone just crossses off players that are drafted and keep their own list of who they've drafted and gives it to th commish after the draft. seems easy enough

FF Today's very own Cheatsheet Compiler and Draft Buddy would do the trick, I would think! I've used it for 3 years now, and it satisfies everything I could ask for in a draft day package. Only $15 and you can pay via Paypal.

I've been playing since 1995 & have yet to use a draft board. I have seen them on ebay & most go for around $20-$40. In my league, its up to the owners to keep track. You get 2 minutes per selection, if you can't make a selection within that time, it jumps to the next owner in line, then back to the owner that missed his chance & repeats until said owner makes his selection. The same rule is in effect on players that have already been drafted - if you call out a player that has already been drafted, you lose your spot in line. Seems like a stiff penality, but we were getting tired of the same owners every year not paying attention. We had a 10 team league that filled 18 roster spots each - the drafts were lasting too long, so this is what we did. At the end of the 6th & 12th rounds, we take a 10 minute break & post an up-to-round list of players that have been drafted, if you have questions....that is the time to look & cross off any players drafted. The ones that keep track can eat, smoke, drink, or bullsh*t.....while the goofs do their homework. Works for us. BTW - if you pick a player that is retired/out for the year, the pick remains until you release him as a FA pickup/drop (we allow 1 per week - starting the 3rd wk), so until that happens, he's just dead wood on your roster.

We do our live draft in one of the offices where I work. We snagged a huge board a few years ago, and use those dry erase markers. We go up one by one and list our draft picks.

It works good to monitor where everyone is, and it kinda adds to the drama when someone is standing there, trying to decide between two players, and finally writting down their choice.

You could probably score a good board at Office Max for not too much $.

I've been with the same group of guys for years now. We all used to bring our magazines and go through the draft and the picks would be made orally. One person (me) would write down everyone's pick and then enter it all into the website.

Last season we used posters. STAPLES has them for very cheap and we posted them around the basement. We had markers and when it was one's turn to pick, he would walk up and write down his selection. This made a hell of a difference. Not only did it make the draft more intense, it made the teams easier to enter into the system, we didn't have to constantly tell people who had been taken because they could look around and see, and drafting was better because you could see who still needed to draft which positions. I highly recommend it.

Good idea. We hook up a projector to a laptop and enter picks into our web-based drafting program.

That is why we do it. It is fun to see to person go up to the front and make their pick. It is also exciting to see which position he goes for (all of the stickers are color coded by position). Than the speculation names are thrown out until he puts the actual pick up. The board and stickers cost around $20. It is a small price and really adds to a draft.

I also like the projector idea but we usually do our draft outside during the day so it wouldn't work as well.

And for you guys who say you use magazines and cross out the players picked, does your commish also add up the scores on Monday morning hudled over a newspaper?

The problem w/a draft board is that someone has to maintain it. Nobody wnats to be stuck up there updating the draft board...they all want to be sitting w/their notes and stuff, closely watching what other owners are doing and plotting their next move.

So, unless you have some slut to be your draft board beeotch...don't bother.

We use a draft board and I like it. We get it from www.draftkit.com -- it's around $20 - split between 12 players. I think it's a small price to pay for the added convenience on draft day. Not only does it help during the draft, but afterwards, we can sit around and discuss everyone's teams easier because of the board. Putting the labels on is not that big of deal.

The suggestions you'll see about getting paper at Staples and printing your own labels are, IMO, absurd. I'd rather pay the $20 than waste a couple of hours doing the board and labels myself.

I forgot about that part of it. It is a lot easier to see how teams stack up.

We don't have one person do it. Each person is responsible to go up and put up their pick. That is also how it is announced. I guess our draft is more laid back because people do look up from their notes every now and than.

It's pretty fockin easy to walk up to the draft board, and WRITE DOWN the name of the player you are drafting.

We don't bring in some slut to do it for us, and we don't waste money of these stickers with players names.

But then again- whatever works for your league.

You need 3 things.

1) A poster board

2) A black marker

3) A ruler

Then you're all set and it costs your about 50 cents.

having each player get up, walk to the board, and write down their pick added about an 1 hour to our draft. not a big deal, since draft day is a good time, but it is much more efficient not having to clear all the materials off the lap, put the write in the pick, and get resettled. my owners have enough trouble making a selection in the alotted 2 minutes sitting their asses on the couch.

now i just enter the picks into rtsports.com drafting software, and use a projector. i also enter all my picks into draft buddy, so that at the end, it will spit out who it thinks the best teams are based on who the starters would be, and our scoring system. always fun to see how the buddy thinks we stack up afterwards.

ebay

Exactly. I am the Commish of our league, and I have an auction out there - as we speak - for our Sportsline one that we won't be using - since we do an online draft.

There are many others out on eBay like me who got the complimentary kit - but no need. They seem to be going for around $20 plus shipping.

I found the following site on e-bay last night. It is only $7.00. The catch is you have to print out the board and tape it together and then pring the stickers on some Jumbo Avery labels.

I still think for $7.00 + some labels and ink it is cheaper than 12 poster boards and some markers. BTW I will print mine on the color laser printer at work for free.

That I agree with. Having a board is the main draw. The stickers are a nice perk but definitely not necessary. I just thought all draft boards come with the stickers. But if you are making your own board than I think it is worth the $1.67 per player to buy the board. It happens once a year, why not splurge?
