Had a serious scare this week

Recommended Posts

My husband was hospitalized last Friday for pulmonary embolism (blood clots in his lungs) This serious, often fatal condition was likely caused by an infection that he'd contracted from an IV when he went to the ER about a month ago for a bad migrane. Most clots come up from the legs and many people have a history of them. He did not have any clots in his legs, just in his lungs and one in the infected arm.

He's been on and will continue to be on blood thinners for up to a year, to make sure there is not a recurrence.

I was a very scared and sad wife this past week  But the good news is he may be released to go home tomorrow

The same thing happened to a friend of mine over the 4th (July that is). I saw him that day and he was fine. That night he was doing fireworks with the wife and kids and experiencing pain under his ribs. It got worse to the point he could hardly breathe. He went to the emergency room and found out it was 4 blood clots that had traveled to his lungs. The Dr said had they gone to the his brain or heart, it could have been fatal. It also could have been worse if he was a smoker (another reason I should quit). Anyway, he was supposed to be in for a week but got out in 2 days. I believe he's on a blood thinner called coumadin. He was taking shots as well for awhile. Not sure if he's still doing that. Life comes at you fast! :(

We'll I passed the physical, so if I ranked in A band for the last test I took, Written (reading comprehensive, math, personality, scenerio reaction questions), I move onto a psych test, polygraph, background check, and then board interviews. It's a long process so you never know. By the time I finally get on I could of probably have gone to med school :(

That's some pretty serious and scary stuff Spider. A few months ago I was at the doctor just for a regular check up and she was asking the usual questions and one of them was had I been having any pain in my legs. I had been having very strange pains in one leg on and off for a couple of months for no reason that I could relate it to, so I told her about it.

She was concerned and ran tests right then to make sure there were no blood clots forming and luckily there were not. This isn't something the doctor's take lightly apparently.

Glad your husband is doing better and thank God they caught it in time.

My sister had bilateral pulmonary embolisms last year. Now, she has to take all kinds of blood thinners for the rest of her life. She didn't tell anyone in our family about the whole ordeal until about 3 weeks ago.

Who goes to the Emergency Room for a headache?

I have a buddy who went to the ER Memorial Day weekend of '05 due to a severe headache.

They found a clogged up blood vessel in his brain that could have lead to an aneurysm. Doc told him he would probably have died in 24-48 hours had he not gone to the ER.

He rarely gets headaches, so a 6 day headache in the same area, with hearing loss on that side and 2 days of nausea and vomiting would be a good reason to go, don't you think?

He could have gone to our family doc, but they would have ordered tests/CAT scans which are all done at the hospital anyway.

Is there a known reason? a coworker said that her husband, their daughter and the husband's sisters all share some sort of condition that makes one prone to clots ( runs in families) . You might consisder getting tested...

They tested her for conditions that are known genetic links to PE's, and found nothing. The docs specifically said that it was not genetic.

I was in the hospital July 24-28, being treated for a deep vein thrombosis (massive venous clot in my leg from knee to groin). I was in Panama on a fishing trip July 14-21 and when I returned my leg was extremely swollen from knee down to toes. Had a precautionary ultrasound on the 24th and they put me straight in a wheelchair, checked me in and started the meds. Coumadin for 6 months and if no recurrence, I will be free again. The docs, who are all good friends of mine, told me I was extremely lucky I didn't throw a clot while 60 miles offshore in the third world. My gang would have had to use me for chum.

Moral: take lower leg swelling very seriously and schedule an ultrasound to look for DVT.

Best wishes for a continued recovery buddy. Do you have any side effects from the coumadin? I know there are certain foods you can't eat because it counteracts the thinning effects.

By the way, here's my Public Service Announcement for all the geeks here

About 1 out of every 1000 people in the United States will have a blood clot in the veins, called a venous thrombosis.

Venous blood clots are more common in men than women.

It is estimated that 200,000 people die each year from these blood clots. This is more than breast cancer, AIDS and car accidents combined.

Blood clotting disorders, or thrombophilia, can be inherited or acquired. About 25 percent of people with a venous blood clot have an inherited disorder.

Of the 200,000 or so new cases of venous blood clots each year, most people who have an inherited blood clotting disorder do not know they have it.

The two most common inherited blood clotting disorders are factor V Leiden and the prothrombin mutation (factor II).

About 5 to 7 percent of Caucasians (white people of European descent) have factor V Leiden and 2 to 3 percent have the prothrombin mutation. These genetic changes are less common in other ethnicities.

The risk of having a blood clot increases with age in everyone, but the risk further increases for people who have an inherited blood clotting disorder.

I didn't know RLLD could create such a condition across the country.

While I may harbor a deep seated desire to have SF all to myself and bathe in her sweat and saliva....I hope everything works out for her and hers....
