Shotgun season in Ohio is here!

Recommended Posts

leaving in 3 hours for SE Ohio! We are allowed to take 3 in that county and since I didn't

have time to get one with a crossbow the last week...I want at least 2!

the good: the weather will be warm and I won't freeze my ass off

the bad: the weather will be warm so the deer won't move much

the ugly: the weather will be warm so the carcasses won't keep well

Huzzah!!

yea the difference being I wasn't able to get out there much due to the holiday and relatives staying

at my house, in a county where you can only take 1 deer on a small piece of property...we got to the

ranch earlier today in a county where you can take 3 deer on 600 acres there are 5 of us. I chased up

6 deer in picking out my two spots.

if I don't see anything today I'll try and bag the fat chick running the econo lodge, the one that looks like edjr

I've hunted half my life, I still don't understand how you think warm weather is a deterrent. Warm weather extends the rut, deer forage more and you get more hunters, moving more deer. I'll take warm weather all the time...

Good luck.

it ain't easy keeping that many deer cold in the trailer when it's 65 degrees. that more than anything can cut the trip short.

normally it's 30 degrees so no problem. I've lost 1 and a half deer due to warm weather.

as for more hunters...I likely won't see a soul. i have a hundred+ acres to myself and the neighboring property owners only

allow relatives who just sit in their stands far away from me.

Well what can I say...we did good. I took a 4 point and a doe. My dad took a 5 point. The other three bagged a 6 point,

8 point, 10 point and a button. Instead of doe hunting, we left a day early to avoid the nasty weather and keep the kills fresher

in the warm weather. The 8 was the best kill with a picture perfect rack and over 200lbs, a lot of monsters came out of the area

(morgan county)

Hey man, try filling the cavity with ice while it's hanging. I've done that before and it's worked out well. Either that or quarter it up and throw in to coolers on ice. Why take the chance of rooning some good meat.

Is this the official redneck thread of the day?

Well, the out of towners like us who went down there to hunt = not rednecks.

Most of the guys where we stayed had plates from cleveland, cincy, detroit...and several were

from all around the country. NY, NJ, etc.

the locals = west virginny caliber rednecks. :headbanger:

each carcass had a couple bags in it, we hung them overnight with bags o ice in and hanging against them.

then yesterday skinned and even deboned. i had approx 150lbs of beef to take in. yummay! making burger,

sassage and lan-jagrs :headbanger:

Why don't you just use a rifle? A shotgun slug is much more difficult to hit a deer with.

When there aren't a whole lot of trees around to stop a bullet, I'd rather they shoot slugs.

When I was in college in Texor I was hunting an oats field with a friend of mine. He was using slugs. I saw a coyote running at a full sprint across the field (we got 10$ dead or alive from TX Dept of Wildlife). I here him shoot and the coyote goes rolling probably 10-15 times. He shot the mangy thing from about 120 yards on a dead sprint with a slug. It is still one of the best shots I have ever seen.

I hit the buck perfect from ~120yds, the doe a gutshot at 70. I'll post a pic from where I was sitting.

btw, it's shotgun season.

here it is...I was on the edge of a steep hill looking into the valley with a small stream on each side, this is

my view on the left and out to the front.

the hill goes down to a small plateau, those bushes in the right of the pic are about 25 yards away, the doe was in the grassy area beyond those on a lower

plateau between the fallen tree and the bushes behind it at about 70 yards.

the buck was off to the left, it dips way down to a stream you can't see because of the slope, the buck was partway up the

far slope just above the lowest trees in that open area. you can see those two dead trees in the near opening against each other like an X, the

Buck was just to the right of where they cross between the group of 3 trees.

Hard to figure that distance but it was at least 120yds. those barns are for farm equip and a some cattle.

here is the view off to the right, I was close to that side because you can see in the distance a leaf covered trail that leads right down

into the valley. in this area you are looking at 50-70 yards max for a good shot and few large openings. you can see the other stream there.

Shotgun and rifle season were the same thing in Texor. Cool pics, post more if you got em and get Hartford this weekend.

I agree, cool pics. I still have to get a pic of my 10 pointer up. I only have a pic from my phone on my work PC. It's not the best but I'll put it up...

Nah, It was a nice buck, but I'm not putting one on the wall till I get a real trophy. I saw my wall hanger last year, but, with a shotgun, which is what we have to use where I hunt, he was just too far away. Looked like a focking cow going across the field and that rack was plenty visable from 250+ yards away.

At least you asshats aren't trying to disguise the fact that you do this for fun. There's nothing more pathetic than a hunter trying to rationally justify why he shoots x # of animals as often as possible.

No, I and most of the rest of the world simply think of them as douchebags with no feelings.

for fun? I wouldn't exactly call it lol fun. maybe going to a lodge where they set you up in a blind and bait a bunch

of deer in would be fun, but sitting out there all day not seeing anything for hours isn't the most fun thing in the world. pulling out

the guts isn't fun, skinning isn't so bad but deboning a deer sure isn't fun. That doe about killed me tracking it. It went all the way

down the valley through the most overgrown areas. I could only follow it by walking down the stream and I was still getting torn up

while hacking my way through the prickers with my knife. I was soaked in sweat. when I got to the far end of the valley(which

was really focking far) it went back up a long slope near the road where my dad was. When I finally made it out to the road I met up with

my dad and we tracked it over the highest focking hill in the area which was just grass covered. How do I know it was the highest hill? because

when I finally crawled to the top and had a heart attack, I looked around and said ###### this is the highest hill around, the doe ended up

down the other side a little ways into a wooded valley.

typical beyotch treatment

My sister's husband got a 10 pointer.

And some guy shot and killed his nephew 15 minutes before he was allowed to shoot anything. He is in BIG trouble.
