Cuse9 129 Posted January 3, 2007 Mort is reporting that Saban is all but gone. It's not the money.....it's simple, his heart is in college football, not the pros. So, who is going to replace him? Don Shula? Helk, Mike Shula isn't busy! How would that be for irony!!

Peens 0 Posted January 3, 2007 Next time a college coach wants to move up to the Pros I hope the NFL owner tells him "No thanks, you'll just try and get back to college in 2 years".
GobbleDog 996 Posted January 3, 2007 I thought the press conferance was supposed to be at 10:00 am Eastern? Is it ongoing, or is he just late? I want this to be ***official***. As a Dolphin fan I never cared for Nick Saban from the beginning (he's always had a reputation of being an ass throughout the SEC) His personality sucks and after 2 years I'm definately not happy with the results. I'm hoping the Dolphins go back and hire Jim Bates (former d-coordinator who lost the Dolphin job to Saban 2 years ago).
Boston 0 Posted January 3, 2007 I'm sure Saban is looking at a very iffy QB situation as well as an aging defense and realizes this is a franchise that needs a ton of work...probably more than he thought he was getting into when he got hired. Add that to a boatload of money and a desire to coach college ball and he looks like he could be a goner.

Clash of the Titans 1 Posted January 3, 2007 Give me $40 million and you can call me any name in the book. 8 year deal- 30 million + incentives - he is now the highest paid coach in college football...however bob stoops has a " highest paid coach " clause in his contarct and expect him to get an automatic raise sometime in the next few days once this is mad public in the mainstream media

Sweetness_34 0 Posted January 3, 2007 I am happy as a Bears fan that Angelo could not get Saban to come over and we got Lovie instead. I did not care for Saban when he was in MSU. I think Saban realized that if he stayed with the Fins, he was screwed since he had no Qb and by the time Culpepper got down to being decent, his D would be done by then (Jason Taylor is already claiming he may retire this offseason; Zack Thomas is getting old; Kevin Carter is on his final legs etc). Also, playing in the same division as Brady and Belichik must have been part of the reason where he said, it is not worth it to screw my reputation more with the fins. I hope he fails miserably at Bama too, the guy is a sack of crap.
Peens 0 Posted January 3, 2007 I still cant figure out why he even left college in the first place. Doesnt make much sense to even go to the pros if you're only gonna be there for 2 years.
Sweetness_34 0 Posted January 3, 2007 I still cant figure out why he even left college in the first place. Doesnt make much sense to even go to the pros if you're only gonna be there for 2 years. Because he is all about himself. Hopefully, the NFL owners realize how some of these overhyped college coaches do not deserve to be in the NFL. They cannot do anything when they cannot recruit who they want. The NFL is a completely different business.
Jeremy 0 Posted January 3, 2007 Heh. This ranks right up there with "Read my lips..." and "I did not use steroids, period!" He not only denied he was considering the job, he berated the press for even questioning his word on the matter. I'm not feeling sorry for the media, but he was a complete ass about the whole thing and then did an about face. I hope nothing but failure for the guy. And didn't he do nearly the exact same thing when he left LSU for the Dolphins job (i.e. swear that he was staying and then leave)??? After doing this a couple of times, how could any A.D. in the nation trust him (or any recruit for that matter)??? Nick Saban has become the Larry Brown of the NFL--the guy who is ALWAYS looking for the next big paycheck/ego-trip. He'll need every bit of ambition that he has if he thinks he's gonna compete at Alabama. As prestigious as the program was, he's gonna have a tough time stealing recruits from UT, Arkansas, Georgia, Auburn, LSU, and especially FL. Plus, I don't think that Alabama has the in-state recruits that a state like Florida or Mississippi has.
Cuse9 129 Posted January 3, 2007 Wayne Huizenga (how in the hell do you spell that?) said that the reports of the money is way off. "It's nowhere close to that" was his quote. So Saban leaving for the money is not the issue here at all. He simply wants to coach college, not the pros. With that, I think he's a piece of chit. You don't accept a job knowing it's gonna be three years until you get everything going. They brought in a new qb, rb situation was a strange along with the other problems. He duped Huizenga and for what? Wayne gave him all the control, let him use his private jet whenever (which Saban did), built special bubble pracite facility and then Saban decides......screw it, I'm out. I hope Saban enjoys getting his azz whipped by Auburn next year.

GhostofMeanMachine99 1 Posted January 3, 2007 The guy left college ball to take on the challenges (and the money) of pro football. Obviously, he wasn't feeling it in the pro's, so he was afforded the opportunity to go back to college AND STILL make a boatload of money. I don't see a problem with exercising one's freedom to choose. Fock that loyalty stuff. How loyal would the Dolphin's owner had been next year if they finished with the same record under Saban? The only thing that maintains "loyalty" is a contract.
Zackattack 0 Posted January 3, 2007 He went out as a loser in the NFL. He drafted a bunch of weak players in his two years here. Ronnie Brown (2nd pick 2005) and Crowder are the only real good players he brought here. Ronnie is not exactly that great a pick for the second overall?? Fock saban don't let the door hit you in #ss on the way out. Good luck there buddy competition is tough.

I think he told Heizenga in person. Wayne was at his house this morning. Although it looked liked Wayne was trying to make it look like everything was fine and the Phins were gonna be fine. He has to be pizzed off over the entire deal.

Vinnn 0 Posted January 3, 2007 Not that I'm trying to defend this bum but, the Miami Dolphins have been "for sale" for sometime now and its rumored that Huizenga has an interested buyer. GhostofMeanMachine99 1 Posted January 3, 2007 Any time a coach changes jobs in this era of big time sports, he is in a since, "renigging". Is it the coach's fault for the way the contract is set up? I'm sure there are all kinds of buy out clauses and such regarding contracts. Think about it: if the team's going down the crapper, there is nothing stopping the owner from firing the coach. What recourse does the coach have? In most cases, the contracts are set in such a way where the owner would have to buy out the remainder of said contract. Part of the blame should fall on the shoulders of the owner. I would fathom a guess and say since he was so hell bent on getting Saban into his camp, he prolly figured he could sweeten the pot by foregoing any kind of lock-in with Saban. It's a business, it's an employer/employee relationship, and it's contractual language and terms.
Erb047 0 Posted January 3, 2007 Not that I'm trying to defend this bum but, the Miami Dolphins have been "for sale" for sometime now and its rumored that Huizenga has an interested buyer. New Owner = Possible Clean House. There may be more to this than we really know.... Huizenga has been shopping the minority ownership (about 35-40%) for a while now. With all the additions he is spending on Dolphin Stadium, I think he is trying to sell the minority ownership, make his money back, and still have the majority control of the team. Other than that, no way he sells that team right now. He'd lose money if he sold them right now.
Cuse9 129 Posted January 4, 2007 I think if Saban was a man he would have been at the press conference. Don't let Wayne try and explain the mess. Saban tucked his tail and ran off to Bama where the Bama press will be happy, unlike the angry mob of reporters he ducked in Miami. In my opinion, Saban is a man of no integrity.
