SEC: Much Faster and Much Stronger than BIG TEN

USC 'Brews' Up a Blowout

Ryan Brewer scored 3 TDs in South Carolina's Outback Bowl win.

South Carolina completed the ultimate SEC rags-to-riches story under Lou Holtz, going from winless in 1999 to Outback Bowl champions in 2000-01. The Gamecocks got three touchdowns from Ryan Brewer to clobber Ohio State 24-7. Brewer, an Ohio native, ran for two scores and caught a pass for another.

********************

ESPiN's Take

with Rod Gilmore

Ohio St. simply did not show up today. They looked like they were sleepwalking in the first half and did nothing to correct that impression in the second half. Maybe they lost interest in the postseason after missing out on the Rose Bowl, but whatever the reason, the Buckeyes were just mailing it in today. South Carolina played hard, but there's a wide discrepancy in the talent level between these two teams and the Gamecocks have no business beating Ohio St. by this score.

IT WAS OVER WHEN ...

Ohio native Ryan Brewer went out of state to play football. More specifically, it was over when Brewer scored his second TD of the game early in the fourth quarter, giving the Gamecocks' defense a 17-7 lead to protect against listless OSU. Brewer later added a third score.

GAME BALL GOES TO ...

Brewer, coach Lou Holtz and the South Carolina fans. Holtz has turned a program that was 1-10 two years ago and winless last season (in Holtz's first year at USC). The fans get kudos to sticking it out through the thin to get to the thick at the Outback Bowl.

Big 10 is like the Ukraine. Weak the SEC will crush the Big 10 in any sport.

#3 and #5 in the nation in basketball and went 2-1 vs the SEC in bowl games.

Ummm...huh?

Or people who actually look at the entire facts...

Northern football is such a joke it went 2-1 vs the SEC right?

Ask Houston Nutt if Wisconsin plays fast...or Tuberville.

How about SEC teams hold a 35-23 edge against the Big Ten in bowl games all-time?

Tressel could draft the Flash and he would still run a 4.90 in that slow conference....try to keep up with the faster people on the bored.

Did those Slowski' turtles on the comcast commercials go to ohio state too?

the big 10 having a losing record in the bowl is NO reflection on the badgers and the asswhipping they could hand out to most of the sec...

I had a friend was a big baseball player

back in high school

He could throw that speedball by you

Make you look like a fool boy

Saw him the other night at this roadside bar

I was walking in, he was walking out

We went back inside sat down had a few drinks

but all he kept talking about was

Glory days well they'll pass you by

Glory days in the wink of a young girl's eye

Glory days, glory days

Well there's a girl that lives up the block

back in school she could turn all the boy's heads

Sometimes on a Friday I'll stop by

and have a few drinks after she put her kids to bed

Her and her husband Bobby well they split up

I guess it's two years gone by now

We just sit around talking about the old times,

she says when she feels like crying

she starts laughing thinking about

My old man worked 20 years on the line

and they let him go

Now everywhere he goes out looking for work

they just tell him that he's too old

I was 9 nine years old and he was working at the

Metuchen Ford plant assembly line

Now he just sits on a stool down at the Legion hall

but I can tell what's on his mind

Glory days yeah goin back

Glory days aw he ain't never had

Glory days, glory days

Now I think I'm going down to the well tonight

and I'm going to drink till I get my fill

And I hope when I get old I don't sit around thinking about it

but I probably will

Yeah, just sitting back trying to recapture

a little of the glory of, well time slips away

and leaves you with nothing mister but

boring stories of glory days

On a side note: The packers have 12, count 'em 12 NFL Championships

NFC North rules

We'd have to add a crappy 12th team to have a championship. And yes, I'm counting Notre Dame in among the crappy teams.

1-2 vs the Big Ten in the bowls. I guess the other teams didn't get the memo.

I didn't see any of those much faster people catch Ginn before he got hurt. He seemed to actually pull away from all those people that run a 3.9 40 in the SEC.

Did the Lions beat the Cowboys by 27 like UF did OSU? Did Ohio State come into the game having lost 2 of their last 3, like the Cowboys did against Detroit? Nice try, swamp douche.

Hell, since we're living in the past in this thread........Gators won by 27, but didn't set the all time record for a blowout. That would be my Cornhuskers in 95.....they actually won the National Championship game by 38 points......are you kidding me!! Who did they play.....hmmmm.....who was it........oh that's right it was those lightning quick Gators.

All, well most, of these focking Gator fans were invisible until after the game. What a fanbase.

And yeah I know that my Huskers got beat by an SEC team this year, Auburn, but I don't give a crap. My Huskers blow now, but what can I say?!

baby jesus reminds everyone that losing by 1 point or 30 is still losing. he says not to question how he does things or why, just be in awe of the miracle gifts he bestows regardless of what earlthy forms they take. also, tressell made a pact with satan and had to be be taught a lesson of a humiliating nature. it was either that or scorch columbus with fire and brimstone. baby jesus thinks this was a better way to do it.

Im pretty much the same way but have been turned by a few of these idiotic SEC homers who think their crap don't stink.

Notice how many Florida threads there are now. Id say a total of about 3 people posting in them had the balls to say anything before the game.

didn't you see the hold on that kickoff return?

:pointstosky:

It was even brought up on a couple of espIn outlets.

they player from florida with the dreds (#8 or #6) had an angle on ginn and he would have come close to him on the sideline, but he was held.

He even turned and looked at the ohio state player who had held him as he and another florida player ran down the sidelines behind ginn.

now i am not saying that the florida player would have tackled ginn, but i would like to see the whole return without the hold on one of the few florida players that could have disrupted the play.

There is holding on every single play.

I think they should only call it where it directly affects the play, allowing the refs to concentrate their attention to the area of play most central to the location of the ball carrier- and his direction of travel.

Calling holding 50 yards away from the ball where the two involved have no bearing on the play is assinine, and concentrating on them to begin with so you miss holding that matters excaserbates it. :dunno:

did you see the play? did you see the replay? did you see where the holding took place? it was not 50 yards away from the ball. i saw holding without the aid of the replay, while the play was actually happening. when a guy sticks his arm out and grabs another player's shoulder from behind and the player that he grabs stops moving for a second....that is something that needs to be called.

I saw the hold...and who it was on...and that guy was not catching Ginn anyway. Maybe close to him...but not catching him.

Again...nobody else on the return caught him...so I guess he is pretty fast.

and there are holds all the time...but not all get caught...

I did see Florida not get the first down on their first drive of the game until the official gave the Florida player an extra half a yard on the spot. I also saw Florida not get a touchdown on replay that was not overturned.

If Florida is really that dominant, why are they 2-2 in bowl games in the last 5 years against the Big Ten - including a 37-17 beating by Iowa.

You are nuts if you think Florida is more talented than OSU. Of course they looked faster, they were playing with 5 wide receivers while OSU played with 3 linebackers the entire game. OSU was outcoached - by a coach from Ohio. Couldn't you find anyone from SEC country who knows football good enough to coach Florida? Just don't be crying when Urban Meyer leaves Florida to coach OSU once Tressel retires.

{full disclosure: UofM fan / Big Ten proponent here}

But jeez, couple things here:

(1) Florida kicked the crap out of OSU so give them their respect. Quit crying and making excuses that OSU is somehow still superior to Florida. The better team won.

(2) SEC guy who is making the blanket argument with historical conference vs conference bowl records -- Based on your own argument, you would be conceding that the Big Ten is better than the SEC this year.

I don't agree with that statement, but just wanted to point out that your argument is just slightly lame.

I've never understood why some people buy into conference versus conference bowl performance as a true indicator of conference comparison -- It hardly represents anything close to conference play -- Teams get upwards of what, 5 weeks to prep for their opponent. (While I guess, it's basically an easy stat to google for argument's sake so that's probably why it gets thrown around so much). This is exactly why THE NCAA NEEDS A PLAYOFF SYSTEM. Get the top teams in there and have em duke it out 3 weeks in a row without having the luxury of a month's preparation for their opponents...

Agreed...and for the most part Im not even a conference guy...Im a Wisconsin fan and hate Michigan and OSU and hope they lose...but the continued crap out of some people actually made me pull for those teams.

Its like in the NFL...Im a Packer fan...screw any NFC North team...I hate the Bears and hope they lose.

Im not sure who is making excuses for OSU. They lost...they were dominated that night for sure.

And agree on the bowl thing. For a few reasons.

1. I think if the game is played right after the season...UT and Penn State might have been the other way around. Why? Paterno is damn good at preparing a team for a bowl game...and Fulmer is just terrible...which leads me to #2.

2. UM vs USC might have just been a bit different as well...because like above...Carroll is very good at planning for a bowl...where as Carr is pretty awful.

3. The layoffs are ridiculous...Im not saying it cost OSU or anything because Florida had the layoff too. I just think all around you don't have the best games out of teams when there is that long of a layoff between games. Hell...lets make the NFL playoffs start in February for a March Super Bowl...

Brewer, an Ohio native, ran for two scores and caught a pass for another...etc.

Um, why would you bring up that game as an example in this thread? Not only was it 6 years ago, but Brewer, who almost singlehandedly won that game, is an Ohio Mr. Football who wasn't offered a scholarship at OSU because he wasn't fast enough.

The SEC being faster than the Big Ten is a fishy arguement. There are lots of reason's OSU lost the other day, but speed wasn't really one of them.

Top to bottom, the SEC is definately faster and stronger than the Big Ten, but that's mostly because the SEC has a dozen schools who actually care about their football programs while the Big Ten only has 4 or 5. Same thing is true about the Pac 10. Year to year though, the difference between Florida/Georgia/Bama/etc and OSU/Michigan really isn't that much. Clearly the next few years Florida has some ridiculous talent, that was pretty evident, but Vernon Gholston and Marcus Freeman are every bit the athelete that Jarvis Moss is. A few years ago everyone was talking about Miami's team speed when the Buckeyes went in and showed they could match it.

I think the fact that OSU had to go out of conference to add a challenging game to their schedule (Texas) while playing mostly teams a tier or two below themselves during conference play, as well as not having a championship game, hurt the Buckeyes when they played Florida. Our opinions of the team (as well as their opinions of themselves) were clearly a bit inflated.

But basicly that's not really going to change until the Big Ten boots joker Northwestern to the Ivy league and recruits Louisville/WVU/ND to join the conference, push us up to 12 teams and have an actual conference championship (and tells Indiana/Illinois to get their acts together). But that's probably not going to happen anytime soon because in the end football isn't everything and I'm just whining (and NBC still has an exclusive TV contract with the Irish). Oh well, there's alway next year.

well i guess that practicing WITH SEC players everyday made him a little faster.....as in 3TDs faster.

besides USC was up 28-0 on ohio state in their re-match bowl game one year later...

Because speed is pretty much the only thing that makes someone a better football player.

well i guess that you all will never win a bowl game against any SEC opponent....unless a great earthquake reshapes the united states and pushes ohio down below the mason-dixon....
