Ripken=stat compiler

Ripken's avg 162 game season stats:

.276 - 23 - 91 - 89 runs - .340 OB% Top 5 in MVP voting 3 times

Jim Rice avg 162 game season:

.298 - 30 - 113 - 97 runs - .352 OB% Top 5 in MVP voting 6 times

Not bashing Ripken, but I dont think his game record is that big of a deal imo. I don't see how if say someone missed 5 games in the same span, he instantly becomes a legend vs the guy that missed 5 or 10 or 20. Say someone averaged 2 games gone a year even, just doesn't make me go wow.

I admit its rare/unique or whatever, I am not even saying he shouldn't be in, I just don't see how its gets mentioned with the greatest sport events ever.

well there were 13 guys who didnt vote for Gwynn, A lifetime 338 hitter, with 20 straight seasons of 300+

I dont see how either were not voted for anyways, other then stupid writers who want to get their names known

I take it you never played baseball, much less SS at the major league level, that is so much wear and tear on a body, its not like he was Gehrig who just played 1B, and im not even a Ripken supporter

Babe Ruth was big fat slob that if he played with todays players would have been a .250 average hitter. Can you imagine that big cow trying to hit a Randy Johnson Fastball or a Nolan Ryan curve.PUH----Leaaaaaaaaaaaaaaase.....

If you really think that the game record is not that big of a thing, you know NOTHING about baseball. The guy suited up every DAY for 2400 straight games. Its beyond reason.I bet there isnt person on this site that hasnt missed a day of work in 20 years. This guy played the toughest position on the field and never missed a SINGLE game.

Also, take aaway the streak and the guy is still a UNANIMOUS selection. In a day and age of a bunch of steroid using cheaters, money hungry bigheaded atheletes Rip was a class act....

Im just saying what reason would 8 guys have for leaving him off of there ballot???!!!

I don't have as much of an issue with someone not putting Gwynn or Ripkens name on the ballet as I have with someone actually voting for Jay Buhner. When I found out that Jay Buhner got a vote, I immediately lost respect for the entire voting process. The person who voted for Jay Buhner should never cast another HOF...EVER.

I'm glad you used that analogy. It makes is very easy for me to illustrate my issue with the 'consecutive games' record.

Yes, I've missed work when I've been sick or injured. You know why? Because I'm man enough to realize that if I show up to my shop or a job site sick or injured... I put everyone around me in danger. So I stay home... even though it means costing me money and screwing up my schedule.

Cal played in games he shouldn't have been in... just to keep the record alive... to the detriment of his team. Nice job Cal... you're a stat ######. Here's your trophy.

I agree with you. A friend of mine had an idea that I think would have been perfect for Ripken. Get to 2130 (was that Gehrig's record at the time?), then sit out, thus tying the record but not beating it. Go into the record book together, keeping one of the great class acts in sports history in the record book. I think it could have been more meaningful to do this than beat the record of a man whose own streak was halted by ALS.

That's my $0.02 (for what it's worth), so for those that think I'm nuts, flame away.

Dude - you have no focking idea what you are talking about! Babe Ruth was the greatest player to ever grace the diamond - hands down! Look at his numbers versus EVERYONE else at the time. He played during a period where pitchers dominated - no juiced balls, no "thinned-out" pitching staffs. The guy was an animal.

Not only was he the most dominant slugger of his era, he was one of the best pitchers in the game before heading to NY.! 94-48 w/2.28 career ERA. Back to back 20 win seasons - he'd be worth $10 million/year as a pitcher in todays market!

Several voters this year turned in ballots without any names on them in protest of the presence of steroids in baseball. I believe the thinking was that they basically didn't feel that they could put any trust the sport since their was no way to definatively tell who was doping and who wasn't. There was an interview on NPR with one of the writers Tuesday. You can listen to it here: Abstaining From Voting on Baseball's Hall of Fame

I think i saw where he got the 3rd highest percentage of votes of anyone in history. Obviously he's not even close to the 3rd best to ever play the game. Heck, he's not even as good as Gwynn who got like 5 less votes than Cal. Explain that one to me.

During his 500 games after breaking the record...not one other player in the league played in all of his team's games.

That is crazy.

And someone posted just offensive stats to compare? I believe 2 gold gloves...19 all star appearances...3000 hits 400 hrs...

What I was trying to get at is just because you show up to work all the time, doesn't mean your work is better than someone elses due to that fact alone. People act like hes Jesus when they talk about that streak....I am sorry, its a big thing to accomplish, but it should be heres his stats and what hes done when he played...oh btw, he didnt miss a game for this long too. Not he didn't miss a game, and oh btw he got some hits the way it is now. I don't think that streak should add to his stats...if you see what im getting at.

Yeah, my old boss use to give me ###### how he has never missed a day of work, but all he did was make personal phone calls and sit in his office all day. I could come into work feeling like ###### if thats all I ever did. His always being there didn't mean he was the best employee by default.

All that said, Cal is good, should be in, just tired of people elevating for the streak alone.

The 'fat slob' had almost 100 more career stolen bases than Ripken.

Too much idiocy in your post to work on it any harder than that.

And he probably didn't deserve half those all star starts, gold glove is the worst award in sports and as I said, he's a compiler.

I heard that some writers turned in blank ballots. Reason being that Babe was't unanimous so no one should be.

There are a few reasons they weren't unanimous.

1. Joe Dimaggio didn't get voted in until his third try. Alot of old timers figure if it took Joltin' Joe three times then there is noway anyone can get in on first ballot.

2. One guy sent in a blank ballot as a protest to the "steroid era". He said he will never vote for anyone that played during that time (90-05) at least not first ballot nominees.

For those of you that don't like baseball I understand, but this is definitly a better read than TO!

Like I said.If Ruth ,who was definately NEVER in shape,to say the least would have been an ordinary at best baseball player in todays game..

No way he turns on a Nolon Ryan Fastball with his 40 oz Tree that he used to swing...

Also,

he wouldnt have stole a single base in modern day.

Ruth would have beem another Steve Balboni if he didnt play back in the 30's.

Most accounts I've read say that Ruth didn't get fat till the later half of his career. He was in pretty good shape during his early years. Plus he was clearly head and shoulders above all the rest of the altheletes of his day. If he played in today's game, and had access to all the strength and conditioning knowledge today's players have (as well as perhaps chemical enhancments), I suspect he would still be one of the top players in the game. As for fat players not being able to compete in today's MLB, tell that to David Ortiz.

The influx of talent from integration and international play has certainly made today's pro baseball better top to bottom, but Ruth was clearly the best white power hitter in his day. Translated into today's game he would be no worse than Jim Thome or Jeff Bagwell (both possible future HoFers). But in my mind he would certainly be better than Mark McGwire.

As it happens, 852 N. Clinton in Rochester is where they publish SWISH, a "bi-monthly" devoted to NBA basketball from the gay perspective. I should know, because I...uh, because my roommate gets it. Uh, my wife's brother's roommate, I meant to say.
