Troy Williamson has vision issues...

Recommended Posts

First, let me clarify by saying I believe Troy Williamson can be a decent NFL WR. In fact, he's one of my 'controversial' players I feel will surprise next season when everyone else has written him off.

But has anyone noticed when a player has problems catching a ball, be it a RB, WR or DB, and they need a 2nd-chance, they suddenly find out that the player's eyes were the problem? Apparently Troy Williamson is getting a 2nd-chance:

After taking a battery of tests, the Vikings and Troy Williamson believe eyesight problems are partly responsible for all his drops in 2006.

Williamson can beat defenses deep with his speed, but consistently misjudges long passes. Williamson said he will attend the entire off-season conditioning program as he tries to win back a starting gig in 2007.

Didn't they say this in the middle of last season? Thought they corrected it but he still had balls bouncing off his head.

This was supposedly discovered about WR Charles Johnson a few years back, but the corrections didn't account for lost speed and so forth. If Williamson still has the speed (I'm sure he does), maybe this will help a little.............

This situation is not uncommon in sports but I don't remember vision correction turning someone's career around.

actually, vision 'exercises' are unbelievably sophisticated for pro sports (especially baseball and hockey...). there are also exercises that can help the regular joe improve his vision almost to the point of not having to wear glasses (especially reading glasses)...

if he has some sort of astigmatism, it would his ability to judge depth - thereby making him misjudge where the ball is really going... if they can work on this, and correct his vision, at least the balls may actually hit his hands before he drops them... :dunno:

I remember also a few years back when a Packer had such issues, but for the life of me I can't remember who it was. Think it was a DB like McKenzie or Sharper. Attitude aside, I do remember it helped his game considerably, which is why I don't completely discount the discovery.

I watched several MN games this season as C. Taylor was on one of my teams. The kid did drop several passes, but there were many balls thrown behind him, way out in front of him..... It was not 100% his fault. A QB that could still throw the deep pass with accuracy would help him immensely.

I find it very surprising that something like suddenly finding out a player has a vision problem can happen.

Wouldn't you think that in the NFL, being the multi-gazillion dollar enterprise that it is, players in vision-critial positions would be tested and retested on a monthly basis?

These guys are getting an MRI done every time they stub their toe. You would think vision tests would be a fairly regular thing.

Since when does seeing the ball matter?

Sincerely,

Reche Caldwell

Hehe, : shocking: should be changed to :reche:.

Youd think it would be a part of the combine as well.

Maybe it's the scouting department in Minny that has vision issues?

He's looking for ways to extend his career. Bad eyes is a good one. David Carr is a master at deflecting blame. Maybe Williamson has read his book, "How I can suck yearly as an NFL player and continue to be paid'.
