Based on '85 numbers heading into the '86 season, I'm guessing the top 10 was something like this, in alphabetical order:

Wade Boggs, 3B, Bos

George Brett, 3B, KC

Vince Coleman, OF, StL

Dwight Gooden, SP, NYM

Rickey Henderson, OF, NYY

Don Mattingly, 1B, NYY

Willie McGee, OF, StL

Dale Murphy, OF, Atl

Cal Ripken Jr., SS, Bal

Ryne Sandberg, 2B, ChC

Could make a case for the stud catchers (Carlton Fisk and Gary Carter) or other guys who hit well but may have had question marks (Dave Parker, first time in 7 years he had played at an MVP level; Pedro Guerrero, good overall power numbers but weak on RBI). Was tempted to omit Coleman but he stole 110 bags as a rookie at age 23 and there had to be a lot of hype from that, plus there had to be belief that he would improve on the otherwise Scott Podsednik-type numbers.
