Need tips/suggestions on how to do a weekend in Vegas

Recommended Posts

How do you figure it's a guaranteed way to lose money?

Assuming they are betting equal amounts on red and black:

red - one loses, one wins - even

black -one, loses, one wins - even

green - both lose

Zero wins and some loses = 0% chance of winning money

All house games have worse odds than backjack.

Some slots and video poker are > 100%.

This is a good way to guarantee losing money. It doesn't sound like much fun either. The other people at the table will think you are retarded.

Whoever said carribian stud is wrong. The odds are worse than blackjack.

If you are only gambling to get free drinks, play slots. Even better, you can sit at one of the bars in the casino and play video poker for 25 cents/hand. You can usually gets drinks really quickly since the bartender is right there. Play as slow as you want.

I said caribbean stud, and I was going by empirical evidence. I've sat there for an hour plus and just bounced back and forth, keeping about even. But I haven't analyzed the odds so I can't debate the subject.

Also, I tend to play at higher-odd tables (mostly because when I go, I go with some sales folk that play $25 craps for instance), so if I go and sit at the bar with my $10 drink, I know I'm saving money. :dunno:

The house advantage in Caribean Stud is pretty high simply because if you fold the house gets the bet even if it's hand doesnt qualify and when you win the hand but he doesnt qualify you only get the bet.

I tended to play a lot of hands, don't know if that helped. Like I said, I don't know the odds and several of you seem to know better, so I respectfully remove my recommendation for the game.

One time I got 4 kings and the dealer didn't qualify. :dunno: Odds were 100-1 I think, which are higher than the wiki link I provided.

Oh no doubt it is a fun game, play small limits, 5$ upfront and 10 in the back when playing, I guess that means you were not in the side bet or the galley as some call it. Most have a slot that you put a buck in each hand and it is insurance against what you described, at a 5$ table putting in a buck a hand that 4 of a kind would have paid @ 400.00.

Be carful on the odds thing, for hands if you are playing larger amounts, like at 5$ you can bet up to 100.00 upfront but they cap the max you can win on a hand, 1000.00 max on most 5$, so if you played 100.00 up front, 200.00 in the back you are only getting 3-1 on that hand.

I haven't played the game in a decade, so I don't recall the details. I have in my mind that I played the slot, but it was only a progressive royal flush payout and not insurance against the dealer not qualifying. That would be a no brainer bet, wouldn't it? :dunno:

Play it if you like it. Just know that your money is likely to go faster.

Look up some basic strategies. I used to have enough of it memorized to help, but haven't played that in years. There were 3 simple rules you could memorize if you didn't want to learn all of it.

eta: I think it was

always stay in with a pair

never stay in without at least ? something

in between it depended on the dealers card

usually i play a $20 in video poker - i tend to do the triple play quarter bets - and play very slowly. when you get drinks - order 2 at a time. servers take a long time to come back in a lot of places. generally i would break even or if i'm up, i'd cash out and play what i won til the server came back.

also, for clubs - go to a bar in a hotel where there's a club you want to go to. most clubs have pricey covers but if you talk to the bouncers or waitstaff at other bars in that hotel, most of the time they will give you free passes. they want to fill the place with girls. i've never paid a cover in vegas.

another hint (and this will show just how shallow and mean i am) dont hit on the best looking staffer. they're used to it and wont care. i much prefer the friendliest bartender who is usually more generous. at rumjungle one time my friend and i drank free the whole night because i gave the bartender my phone number. oh and he hooked us up with some weeeeed  we tipped him pretty well. but i didnt answer my phone  i know. i suck. but he had a girlfriend. that's vegas for ya.

finally, i recommend hanging out at the outside bar next to harrahs. the bartenders do all their tricks and stuff for the crowd. we always got drinks from random drunk guys there. and they usually have some dreadfully corny cover bands playing. it's mildly entertaining and free.

have fun BEG!!!

I'd read up on Pai Gow before you go. It is not "poker" as you think of it with cards; it uses tiles.

 ;)

There are no tiles in Pai Gow.

Agreed. I think JK must have pai gow confused with some other game.

Agreed. I think JK must have pai gow confused with some other game.

Pai Gow (Chinese: 牌九; pinyin: páijiǔ, Cantonese: paai4 gau2) is a Chinese gambling game that is played with the Chinese dominoes tile set. Pai Gow is played in unsanctioned casinos in most Chinese communities.[citation needed] It is played openly in major casinos in Macau, China, Las Vegas, Nevada, Atlantic City, New Jersey, in many California cardrooms, and in some Australian and New Zealand casinos. It is an ancient game, thousands of years old, and steeped in tradition.[citation needed]

The name "Pai Gow" is sometimes used to refer to a card game called Pai Gow Poker (or Double Hand Poker ), which is loosely based on Pai Gow.

Perhaps you are thinking of the card game mentioned at the end?

Pai Gow poker is also easy to play and can go on forever unless you are unlucky. Play for a couple hours, get the comps and drinks, move on to something else.

Fun game....money can stretch quite a long time (even $100)...but this game gives you as close to zero comp value as it gets.

Casino's don't comp games that push all the time.

HTH

There are no tiles in Pai Gow.

Wrong....many casino's have Pai-gow tiles....very rarely will you see anybody but the slanty-eyes playing though.

It's actually the way Pai-gow was intended to be played....

Most casino's will have the card version of PAi-Gow...some will have both, but I doubt any will have just tiles.

You are in luck. The place where you are staying, The Monte Carlo, offers free Craps lessons every morning. When I went a couple of years ago, it was around 11am. Ask one of the pit bosses and they will tell you when and where to show up. But I warn you to show up at least 15-20 minutes early, as it is a popular lesson and you definitely want to stand on the rail to see. (It was 3 people deep when we took the lesson) They do a 30+ minute lesson featuring fake chips, and they let everyone standing on the rail play along. They also pass along the "basic strategy" of craps...and then at the end of the lesson, they lower the table limits to 2-3 bucks so you get try the game for real, at a low investment.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Great to know! I'll look into it Saturday morning - Thanks dj!

Was just about to ask about this place... 'Toby Keith's I Love That Bar'...

My cousin insists we're going there as she loves it! :dunno:

I have this to say... and I just got back from Vegas.

:dunno:  O'SHEAS PAYS

If you can ignore the midget dressed like a leprechaun blowing the whistle while walking on the bar. O'sheas is cheap and has cheap tables.

eta: I went to Tobey Keith's bar/restaurant twice. Great prices and SMOKING hot waitress' in leather tops and short skirts.

Always a good tip on vacation:

Find a nearby convenience store, gas station, or supermarket where you can buy soda in 12 packs instead of paying $2 or more apiece in the hotel.

You can get free glasses of soda on the casino floor, but not in your hotel room.

Obviously this is nore important for a week long stay.

Not exactly true. Odds bets in craps have no house advantage. You have to make a pass line bet first (house edge 1.4%), but once a number is established the odds bets give no advantage to the house.
