So what the bad news on Ron Paul for President?

Recommended Posts

Anyone? As of now he's got my vote unless I'm convinced otherwise.

I only know his stance on Immigration, Iraq, Fiscal Responsibility and Foreign Policy... not so much on other stuff.

I just don't think Ron Paul stands a chance.

Exactly.

I prioritize my primary votes in this order:

1. Vote for the candidate with the best chance of beating their Dem opponent in the election.

2. Vote for the candidate that aligns with my values.

Ideally, I would like #1 and #2 to be the same person, but they usually aren't.

He has never voted to raise taxes.

He has never voted for an unbalanced budget.

He has never voted for a federal restriction on gun ownership.

He has never voted to raise congressional pay.

He has never taken a government-paid junket.

He has never voted to increase the power of the executive branch.

He voted against the Patriot Act.

He voted against regulating the Internet.

He voted against the Iraq war.

He does not participate in the lucrative congressional pension program.

He returns a portion of his annual congressional office budget to the U.S. treasury every year.

:dunno:

Sounds like a standup guy. He doesn't have a chance once the mud slinging starts.

Seriously, I don't know anything about the guy yet but based on your list he sounds like the type of candidate I could back.

Ron Paul doesnt have a downside that I know of. he is basically a libertarian who ran as a republican. Even if he were elected, it still wouldnt change anything. Our government is corrupted beyond any solution but revolution, and we are still decades away from it getting bad enough for that to happen.

I just used my interweb magical searching powers and could not find any dirt on Mr.Paul. Dude seems to be clean as a whistle.

Assuming e won't - will you please?

Libertarian slate:

Adoption of laissez-faire principles which will result in the complete separation of state and economics. This will include, among other things, enormous reduction in taxation, privatization of Social Security and welfare (for both individuals and companies), elimination of business regulation, abolition of labor regulations such as the minimum wage and the cessation of government interference in foreign trade.

Protection of property rights.

Minimal government bureaucracy. The Libertarian Party states that the government's responsibilities should be limited to the protection of individual rights from the initiation of force and fraud.

Strong civil liberties positions, including privacy protections, freedom of speech, freedom of association, and sexual freedom.

No government interference in reproductive rights, including access to abortion.

Support for the unrestricted right to the means of self-defense (such as gun rights, the right to carry mace or pepper spray, etc).

Abolition of laws against so named victimless crimes (prostitution, driving without a seatbelt, use of controlled substances, etc.).

Opposition to any form of smoking ban or regulation of how businesses should run themselves.

Opposition to conscription.

A foreign policy of free trade and non-interventionism.

Support for a fiscally responsible government

Obviously, some of these are extremely popular. Others aren't so popular, especially with Republicans. you won't find some of these listed on his website.

The bad news on Ron Paul is that he's being too honest, making too much sense, and too far out of step with the GOP Fundamentalists and Iraq war supporters. He's getting ripped by Hannity and the like.

he ran for president already as a libertarian, when he figured out he was never going to get anything accomplished he switched over to be a republican. A lot of people simply don't like him for that reason alone

What a load of sh!t. If he was up there spouting the party line your boys would be applauding him for seeing the light and becoming a Republican. :dunno:

So there is NOTHING wrong with this guy?

Why don't all of the other candidates from both parties just throw in the towel and let him win? :dunno:

Kinda like what happened with Joe Liberman? I think this is true on both sides.

Sometimes politics gets in the way of...umm....politics.

I wasn't saying that's necessarily how I felt about him, EM just asked a question and i was trying to answer him. That is why i don't think he has any chance in the race though

I didn't say that was your view, I'm saying that I think it's a bullsh!t excuse/rationalization by people who don't like his views.

plus IIRC, he's still active with the libertarian party, he just ran on the Republican ticket for committee assignments and legislative purposes and stuff.

And so since the Republicans are going to try and nominate a Republican candidate, they may not want to deal with an inentified libertarian

Would the Dems endorse Ralph Nader if he wanted to run as a Dem? I understand it's different, but it's still kinda the same thing...

Oh I don't know, maybe because he's a conspiracy loving whack job.

Rosie O'Donnell ain't got crap on Paul

Edit to add a link evidencing Paul's supreme understanding of the American legal system:

This guy stands for almost everything the majority of the country wants, but because he isnt one of the "chosen few" candidates that the powers that be want (i.e. he isnt corrupt). Yahoo news ignores that he is even running for president, fox news mostly rips him and people in power call him names.

I SAY WE ALL STAND UP, GET ON THE RON PAUL BANDWAGON AND VOTE FOR THIS GUY IN THE PRIMARYS. HE DOES HAVE A GOOD CHANCE OF WINNING IF PEOPLE GET THINKING HE HAS NO CHANCE. DONT WASTE YOUR VOTE, VOTE FOR THE BEST CANDIDATE REGARDLESS OF WHAT YOU THINK HIS CHANCES ARE AND HE WILL HAVE A CHANCE TO WIN. ANYONE REMEMBER PAT BUCHANAN RUNNING TWO TERMS AGO? HE WON A PRIMARY!

RON PAUL FOR PRESIDENT 2008!!!

IT CAN HAPPEN! :headbanger:

Ron Paul is one outstanding American. Voting for him will be easy. Abolishing the federal reserve makes sense, getting out of the North American Union, getting out of the war, are all good reasons. He understands the evils of the patriot act and the importance of American civil liberties.

Climb aboard!!!

Overall I like him.

He gets an A from me on these:

Abortion

Budget

Gun control

Tax reform

Technology

War and peace

I feel he is very much lacking in these categories:

Environment

Energy

Health Care Reform

Again though, I do like him overall. If only there were a perfect candidate out there for ME!!! I will probably end up voting for him in the end.

Fock it, I'm on board too.

I've known about him for years and I'm real glad Ron Paul is out there turning heads and winning name recognition. The guy stands for -mostly- everything I use to believe in when I was a Republican. He's closer to my views than any other candidate. Watching McCain and Guiliani stuble around, I've been pretty sure I'll wind up voting Dem -again- in 2008.

But I never trusted the Dems. Now I don't have to.

I hadn't thought seriously about actually voting for him until now because I've come to hate the national GOP. But for Ron Paul alone- I'm ready to vote in the GOP Michigan primary. This guy'll purge the incompetent Bush retardation cloud out of the GOP and America desperatly needs a rejuvinated worthwhile GOP instead of the cr@p party it is now.
