hoytdwow 202 Posted September 28, 2007 The wife and I are thinking of moving to Virginia (currently in Mass.) Her folks are there, so we could stay with them if needed, until we find jobs, etc. Questions are, what's the best plan? Sell house first, find a job first? If you've done it, were you married/kids? Did you end up split up for some time, while one went to the new place and the other stayed behind to sell house/pack up/move, etc.? Any suggestions? Pitfalls to avoid? TIA ETA: this would be done on our own, not a work-relocation where the company helps/pays for the move
Brad GLuckman 519 Posted September 28, 2007 Moved from the soutwest to the northeast...back home. I put my house on the market and moved in with some friends for a bit so I didn't have to pay a double-mortgage. If you're married with kids that may prove to be more difficult unless you can move in with family... Also it may be tough to sell your house with the market as it is right now. Just a thought ----Also be prepared to sell your house cheaper than you'd like if you are urgent about it. I had to go because of a job opportunity that couldn't wait. I sold it for about $10K less than I would've liked...but I have no regrets. If it's something you're positive you want to do...then I say go for it
wiffleball 4,790 Posted September 28, 2007 If you don't have kids, it makes the process a whole lot easier. Sounds like you don't. I've packed up and moved across the country twice. Best things I've ever done. Need to do it again. Advice? + Take a few long wekends down there during different parts of the year if you can or haven't already. Some places are freaking Nirvana in Springtime and Focking Hell in winter or summer. + Look into taxes - ALL of them. Prop taxes, State and Local income taxes. Look at Housing costs. Decide what it takes to survive at your new location, what kind of salaries you can get and start looking at the job market. - BEFORE you move. + With the housing market being what it is these days, ain't no way in Hell I can advise you on that. Though, I DO hear there's a very nice home in Virginia that's vacant. The Feds might sell it to you cheap.
Mephisto 15 Posted September 28, 2007 GEEK MEET?!?!?! Any ideas regarding WHERE in VA you might be moving? mmm and I live in VA and could assist you with certain things depending upon your potential locale. Depending upon discussions, we could even help arrange to find a place for you to stay if you and yours were to come down to do some scouting.
Let Da Big Dog Eat 40 Posted September 28, 2007 I've done it a number of times. Always get a job first. Likely your new employer will at least offer SOME level of relocation expense. I had one employer not only pay all my moving expenses but also my closing costs on both ends and put me up in a townhouse for 3 months. I always got the job first and moved there first myself, leaving wife and kids behind until I found a house.
hoytdwow 202 Posted September 28, 2007 Thanks for the tips...we're thinking of selling the house, and going to stay with my wife's folks until we find jobs and a house. Home prices in VA (Gloucester/Yorktown area) are so far below what they are in MA that it's almost a joke. Property taxes are less than half what they are here, etc..... No sports there, though

Also, one of the few remaining states with "at-fault" car insurance. I focking paid more for full coverage on the van in PA than I do full coverage for TWO cars in VA. Right now, you can get some serious house for the money. Serious house. Sadly (for you), you are far, far away from us.

BiPolarBear 485 Posted September 28, 2007 We've found multiple listings for 4 BR, 2.5 bath, on 1.5 acres for $250K Virgina is like West Virginia with one extra toof. You may want to live across the State line in Maryland. j/k Serious help: Be very suspicious of the cost estimate you get from the moving company. After they give you the estimate ask if you can get a gauranteed rate. The estimate we got was $11,000 shy of actual cost.
