nobody 2,044 Posted September 29, 2007 Some guy hosting the overnight radio show just said that Roy Williams would make the biggest impact of any player in the league if he was added to the Raider defense. Off the top of my head, I'd take the following safeties over Roy Adrian Wilson Gibril Wilson Bob Sanders Darren Sharper Chris Hope Troy Polamalu Donte Whitner Mike Brown (if he could play more than 2 games a season) Roman Harper (this might be a homer pick) Thanks guys for letting me get that off my chest. Mephisto 15 Posted September 29, 2007 Roy Williams (DB) has been an over-rated fock from the get-go. He's a big hitter... and *crickets* - that's it. Can't cover. A very poor tackler. And generally all around sucktastic unless you like the occasional big hit which a receiver will typically bounce off of and take it to the endzone.
xenophobe 1 Posted September 29, 2007 He's a big hitter who sucks in coverage.

xstang 0 Posted September 29, 2007 I would rate them like this: I would take any of these 4... I'm putting Troy first because the Steelers defense is todally built around him. In addition, he covered TO in the when the Steelers beat the Eagles a few years back and held him without a score... With that said, nobody makes more big plays than Ed Reed... I put Wilson ahead of Sanders just because of the size.... Troy Polamalu Ed Reed Adrian Wilson Bob Sanders - - - - - - - - - Maybe Roy Williams (Ask the Eagles if he can cover) - Think they trorched him last year
The_Mad_Cats 0 Posted September 29, 2007 Roy brings the wood, but like many have said, he seems to frequently be out of position or consistently keep the play in front of him.

Yet he continues to make the pro-bowl year in and year out which boggles my mind Amazing that we can all see it, but announcers continue to blow this trash can.... dcgangstas 41 Posted September 29, 2007 In my humble opinion, Ed Reed is clearly the best safety in the NFL, and by a wide margin. His great physical ability and keen instincts are what separates him from the pack. He's as good at that position for the Ravens as Ray Lewis is as the MLB. Niners_fan 0 Posted September 29, 2007 I agree that Ed Reed is the best safety in football right now. Roy Williams can deliver some nasty hits but he is terrible at coverage and gets smoked on the long ball.
A Dido Brother 0 Posted September 29, 2007 In my humble opinion, Ed Reed is clearly the best safety in the NFL, and by a wide margin. His great physical ability and keen instincts are what separates him from the pack. He's as good at that position for the Ravens as Ray Lewis is as the MLB. He's certainly the best ball-hawking safety in the NFL, but how is he against the run? I don't see the Ravens play a lot, so all I get to see of him are the SC highlight reel int's (and returns). Roy Williams is overrated when it comes to pass coverage, but he's pretty good at the line of scrimmage, which is the common complaint about him - that he's a linebacker playing safety. Oh, and another player missing from this list is Brian Dawkins.
HenryChinaski 1 Posted September 29, 2007 Roy Williams isn't even close.. Ed Reed Troy Polamalu Kerry Rhodes (very underrated but very talented) Brian Dawkins Adrian Wilson (also very underrated) Bob Sanders Just off the top of my head. Roy isn't in the same class as any of those guys.
mr.shitty 0 Posted September 29, 2007 Its so funny, every year since his rookie season (well maybe a little lower as a rook) he has been ranked top 3 (ive seen him #1 more then once) or so on all the IPD ranking sites and he always finishes 20-25 Im not trying to compare fantasy with real value though
surferskin 30 Posted September 29, 2007 i can't believe all you fudge packers left sean taylor off your lists. the redskins have 2 safeties better than roy.

mainev3nt 0 Posted September 30, 2007 Ed Reed by a far margin is the best FS. Theres a difference in the StrongS and FreeS position in the back. FS have to be great zone and man coverage specialists, most defensive plays usually have the FS in a deep drop zone coverage as the last resort for the defense. SS have to be more versitale, whether its blitz packages, stopping the run, etc. Most SS are in man coverage double teaming the x slot reciever, or dropped back in zone, in some cases a SS are brought into a 4-4 (8in the box) to man the hb or blitz the qb. Best FS - Ed Reed - great instinctive ball-hawking abilities, zone-coverage specialist Best SS - T. Palomalu - very, very fast off the edge, great run stopping defense, mid and deep field awareness When you are so accustomed to a particular position on the field its hard to lable and overall best LB, S, CB, DE, DT it depends on how they are used... for example, most people would label jamal williams the best DT (Nose tackle) because of the 3-4 formation hes in, but Kevin williams , marcus stroud, tommie harris they get overlooked because of the 4-3 defense they play where they have help in the middle. You can also say Urlacher is the best LB overall, but if he would switch from the MikeLB position to any OLB position he might not be as good... judging the best defensive players at their position is harder than offensive players. It depends on formation, packages and so on. For instance Merriman is in the LOLB spot in a 3-4 and has to used like a DE coming off the edge... he is regarded as the best "pass-rushing LB" in the league, but is he better than Urlacher in pass defense? Borat33 17 Posted September 30, 2007 Dawkins, Polamalu, Reed and Sanders are the cream of the crop at safety. Roy Williams is not in their league, not even close.
swamp dog 0 Posted September 30, 2007 the funniest thing i saw was him being called for a horse collar penalty in the chi-dallas game...the penalty constructed and named after roy's patented tackling method
