Speed Racer - A Review

Recommended Posts

WARNING: If you suffer from epilepsy or any seizure disorder - or know someone who does, be warned, this movie could trigger you.

Short version: I thought it was great.

Longer version:

Visually - it's outrageous. Tons of color and a rather interesting mix of CGI, cartoon, real people. But seriously... if flashing lights and bright colors bother you - don't see it.

The characters are spot-on. I was really surprised. I think all of them were cast perfectly.

The storyline - right on par with the old cartoons. As a huge fan of the cartoon when I was a youngster - the storyline was perfect. The action was great. They did it without a overexposing Spritle and Chim-Chim or any of the secondary characters. They offered up a little different spin on the Racer-X but did so without ruining the original premise.

My kids loved it and I did, too... it really didn't stray very far at all from the cartoon.

DRAWBACK:

- "Bad" language. This movie was really great and it never ceases to amaze me that the three words that they had in the script - ass (1x) and sh!t (2x) - would not have been missed had they been left out.

In the grand scheme of things, it's not big deal, but I couldn't help but sit there and roll my eyes because it was just so completely unnecessary. SPEED RACER DOESN'T SAY THE WORD "SH!T"!!!@$!##@#!#^ He didn't then, he didn't have to now.

I'll take your word for it, I guess. It looks absolutely awful and I'll never see it in my life, under any circumstances.

I liked the previews, and plan to pick it up when it comes to DVD. And drops to about 7 bucks. But that's what I usually do.

I look forward to it.

Oh... and the kids just reminded me about Spritle giving the finger one time, too.

Yeah, because that was necessary. :dunno:

Also, I'll be back in 2 years with a review.

There is world serenity when Meph reviews a film and condemns mention of the word "ass" and hand gestures.

Maybe the Middle East can be saved.

...in a film for children based on a cartoon that didn't need such filth and gestures. I've never been that much of a cretin.

"Speed Racer" was estimated to have cost $150 million to make and another $100 million to market, according to a recent story in the Los Angeles Times.

yikes...it only made 20 min in its opening week.

It'll probably only get up to around $200 mil in theaters.

What Happens in Vegas almost beat Sped Racer out at the Box Office, and Iron Man smoked them both this weekend.

Speed Racer is the ghey. What a joke of a movie. B)

Bwahahahahahaha...........................................

Speed Racer hasn't even made 30 million dollars domestic Box Office. I guess my 75 million domestic guess should have been around 35 million instead.

What a joke of a movie.

Finally went to see it with my 8-year old at a small independent moviehouse and thought it was actually pretty decent. I think where they went wrong with kids is that the dialogue and storyline are too difficult to follow. Gave my kid a debrief afterwards. He still massively enjoyed it however. I guess the images were for the kids and the storyline/dialogue for the parents.

They're up to $82.5M domestic and foreign. Still not covering their budget.

On a side note, they managed to make Christina Ricci almost look hot, which to me is an astonishing achievement of this movie.

saw this movie in the theater, while high... it was visually stunning

still thought it was god awful... LONG movie... it was painful. speed had to have a 'moment' with every single semi important character at the beginning, middle, and end of the movie...

had some unintentionally funny moments... (maybe cuz my friends and i were high.)

here's an example... (this is at the beginning of the movie when rex is leaving the family supposedly to end the corruption that is going on in racing.

(REX heading towards the door after an argument with DAD)

DAD: (yelling) you think you can just hop in a race car and change the world?!??! It doesn't work that way!!

REX (very serious) that's all i know how to do... (long dramatic pause) and i've gotta do something

there were many corny/laugh out loud lines like that... without them the movie could have been even worse...
