The minimum sentence for unlawful possession of a handgun in New York City is 3 1/2 years. While the NFL has not issued any sanctions against him as of yet (they usually wait for the legal proceedings to play themselves out first), if convicted he won't be released until he's 35, at the earliest. Any talk of him playing again has to start with him staying out of jail for any length of time.

It may be reasonable to expect him to try a plea bargain to reduce the time. the key question is how long will his suspension last. I do believe that regardless of the outcome, a team in need of a WR would probably take a chance on him when he becomes available.
Yippie Skippy 0 Posted May 13, 2009 I tried to package him in trades almost as a throw in. I decided that the value that I could actually get wasn't enough compared to his future potential. I could see the Cowboys going after him, or the Raiders. I am not expecting him to play this season, but I think he is worth stashing on your roster for 2010. If he plays this season it's a bonus. I see it as he will plea down to from the 4th to the 2nd degree possession. That carries a mandatory THEORETICAL one year sentence. June 15 is Plaxico's court date. That is when we will know more. The Moz 69 Posted May 13, 2009 wasn't Marshawn Lynch arrested for the exact same thing only in Cali? If so - then if Palx is outta jail he should get no more suspension than Lynch.

This sounds reasonable. I'd guess he will face at least a suspension of a half season. so if he gets 6 months - 1 year, and gets out on parole after 2-4 months. Assuming he signs with someone prior to that time, his suspension should kick in as soon as he reports to the team he signed with. he may sneak in to play either just after mid season or just prior to the end of the season. but my guess is that he wont be in game shape, so my guess is that he will need at least 2-3 games to get into game shape. so he may be a reasonable starter for your playoff run, but not sooner unless his Jail sentence is less than 6 months. Yippie Skippy 0 Posted May 17, 2009 Plaxico was suspended by the Giants over this, so perhaps those games will count towards the current suspension he is facing.

Yippie Skippy 0 Posted May 19, 2009 i dont think the boys would go after him after dumping TO Pacman and Tank. The Raiders and Cowboys have shown that they are both willing to give another chance to any player when other teams will not. Plaxico doesn't divide the locker room like TO. Plaxico has never had a riff with his QB in his career, yet TO has had one with EVERY QB since Steve Young. I think he would be a good fit on either team. I stilll find it amusing that Plax showed up to the Steelers rookie mini-camp in a limo. There were just a few vets lifting, a few coaches, and the few rooks from the draft. They just laughed and laughed at him. Pretty soon the whole team knew and many gave him a hard time about it, all in jest.

As hard as it may be to believe I think they pruposely shed the distractions this offseason. I wouldn't count on them adding more.
The Moz 69 Posted May 20, 2009 Giants suspended him so one would think that would come into account here an count towards games suspended by the leagues. I would think after being shot and getting a multi game suspension last year - the league wouldn't pile much more on. With Goodell he might ban him for a season. It all depends on if he can somehow work it to a large fine and probation and avoide jail time during the season.

It all depends on if he can somehow work it to a large fine and probation and avoide jail time during the season. that could play a part in it. The only hesitation I have is that usually Goodell makes the call and we havn't seen many (any?) cases where a suspended player was previously suspended by his own team for the same action. honestly as a Jet fan, I'm hoping its as minimal as possible. I think the Jets would be interested in bringing him aboard. He has been a pretty good guy on the football field and could really help with Mark Sanchez's development. Ray_T 753 Posted May 20, 2009 there are a lot of teams that could use him. The Jets have needed a go to guy for years. The Eagles could probably use a guy like him. The Cowboys just let go of their #1 guy and may want a replacement. Oakland, Miami & San Fran could probably use some talent as well. anyone with a track record like Plaxico is probably going to draw some interest regardless of off field issues. Someone will definitely pay for him to play. the only question would be who?
KSB2424 3,148 Posted June 18, 2009 I'm suprised there isn't alot more talk about Plaxico on this bored. It looks as if his legal troubles are postponed until 2010 which opens up the door to him playing in 2009. It will be interesting to see how Goodell handles this since Plax hasn't been convicted of anything as of yet. Worst case scenario I see is a four game suspension in 2009. I don't see many playmakeres out on the FA market, so he should be coveted by a number of NFL teams. Any insight? Also, how does he factor into the early drafts? jgcrawfish 232 Posted June 18, 2009 dude is going to land somewhere pretty soon. the path to him playing this season has been cleared at this point and he's still a freakin beast on the field. If I'm Baltimore, I'm signing Plax to a one year deal instead of paying a ransom for Marshall. I mean hell, you can get Plax for free, Marshall is going to cost you at least a 2nd rounder. Apparently Plax attorneys are arguing that his gun is licensed, just in another state and that he was justified in carrying it due to issues surrounding his personal well being. He's really not denying that he was carrying the gun or that it went off, he's looking to find a loophole that allows him to get off on the unlicensed part because it was licensed someplace else. If he does that, he's probably looking at probation and short suspension from the league. If that turns out to be the case, he still has value because he's easily a WR2 in almost any system because of his redzone threat alone.
wiffleball 4,790 Posted June 18, 2009 The fact that there have been so many delays and continuations tells me that the DA is not willing to negotiate very much. I don't think he can after that jerkoff Mayor spouted off as much as he did. It's more politics than anything at this point. Honestly, I think this case ends up in the SCOTUS. It's a horribly crafted law. Braunfman (his attorney) is the guy who originally opposed the law. This is a perfect case for him - rich famous client, extenuating circs, Braunfman is likey as interested in getting the law tossed entirely as he is in PB. Updated Timing: Grand Jury to Convene: Not so fast, Plax. A Manhattan grand jury will hear the case against the gun-toting Super Bowl hero next month, raising the possibility of a trial that could bench Plaxico Burress this season. Although Burress' next scheduled court appearance is Sept. 23, the timetable could change depending on when the grand jury reaches a decision, Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau said yesterday. A quick indictment would raise the possibility of a trial during the NFL season. If there is no indictment, Burress would face only possible disciplinary action from NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. Defense attorney Benjamin Brafman said after a brief Manhattan court hearing on Monday that the case would likely go to trial next year, giving Burress a chance to resurrect his career in the fall. But Morgenthau's announcement threw that schedule into doubt. "I don't want to get into this," Brafman said yesterday after word of the grand jury schedule became public. "I don't think there's a story here." Burress, 31, who caught the game-winning Super Bowl pass from Eli Manning in January 2008, put a bullet through his thigh inside the Latin Quarter nightclub last November. He was suspended - and later released - by the Giants to cap a tumultuous four years with Big Blue. Both the DA's office and Brafman agreed there was no plea bargain in place. Burress could face a sentence of 3-1/2 to 15 years if convicted on two counts of criminal possession of a Glock. Burress, who has pleaded not guilty, remains free on $100,000 bail. http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/football..._off_track.html Very black and white law. Grand Jury indicts. That's not a conviction, but I'd almost guarantee an indictment in this case. Not sure any team would want an indicted player on their roster, but who knows?? The Sock 0 Posted June 20, 2009 Everything I have read says the trial doesnt happen until 2010. And the NFL wont react till after the trial. I think Plax is good to go this year if he signs with a club. And there are clubs out there that will contract for that 1 year He's woth a laye pick in the draft.
