BTL99 34 Posted August 26, 2013 Just wanna get some input from guys that have done this before. I feel like it won't work, but just wanted to double check. Let's say you spent 95% of your money on the following guys and then filled your roster with $1 players after that: -Drew Brees -Jamaal Charles -Doug Martin -Calvin Johnson Thoughts? Maulers1973 117 Posted August 26, 2013 You land those 4 and you should win your league.
foo08 1 Posted August 26, 2013 Not 4 players but, a good chunk of the money on 6, on a 20 team roster with 12 teams. It has worked out good for me in the past. I am pretty good on the wavier wire for WR's. That is the key for this strategy to work---you have to have a bit of luck but, you should have no problem finding a WR3 or two. Last year for example I picked up James Jones and D. Alexander for next to nothing. Injuries can derail you very quick as well----no depth can be a disaster. High risk high reward is the way I see it. I tend to go for proven stars with a consistent history if I am going to do this.
We Tigers 71 Posted August 26, 2013 I think it would be pretty tough to pull that off. All of them but Brees seem to pretty regularly go for about 25-30% of budget, with Brees going for 20%, too. I think it's very hard to win bids on four "top" guys like that. Teams will also realize quite quickly that you can only win $1 players, and will bid up anyone you put forward to at least $2. You may as well take a nap after buying those 4 because you're not going to win anyone until the last 20 minutes of the auction.
tanatastic 2,062 Posted August 26, 2013 I could see spending on 5 players. 3 rbs, 2wrs. Budget qbs are fine, same with te, k, dst. If I had to spend on only 4 id go 3rb and 1wr.
MrDooDooMan 3 Posted August 26, 2013 I accidentally did it last night. Started off with Jamaal, then I got caught driving up the price on Peyton. After landing Peyton I figured I'd pair him with Demaryius Thomas. Immediately after I got busted bidding up Fitzgerald. After that there wasn't much money to go around.. I did land Reggie Wayne at a nice price and DeAngelo to help fill my void at RB but my team is still pretty weak depth wise. Not really too happy with the team and I think I've learned my lesson when it comes to trying to drive the bids up.
waxg 3 Posted August 26, 2013 I'm in an auction dynasty league ($200 budget). Tried something close to it for the first time this year. You be the judge: QB1 Peyton Manning ($17, keeper) RB1 Adrian Peterson ($40, keeper) RB2 Arian Foster ($51, keeper) WR1 Vincent Jackson ($26, keeper) WR2 Miles Austin ($6, draft) WR3 Golden Tate ($9, keeper) FLEX (RB/WR/TE) Emmanuel Sanders ($6, draft) TE Brandon Myers ($4, draft) K Gostkowski ($2, draft) DST Giants ($2, draft) BENCH QB Jay Cutler ($2, draft) RB Ben Tate ($8, keeper) RB Benjarvis Green-Ellis ($5, draft) RB Danny Woodhead ($5, draft) WR Justin Blackmon ($11, draft) TE Ed Dickson ($1, draft) TE Julius Thomas ($3, draft) DST Rams ($2, draft)
bigmark3333 11 Posted August 26, 2013 Last year I went Foster and McCoy for $62 and $55 after keeping Eli and Ryan Mathews for $13 and $17 respectively. My WRs ended up being DeSean Jackson, Nate Washington, and Lance Moore . I got lucky enough to win the regular season, but it wasn't due to my draft. I picked up Alfred Morris before the season started and guys like Danario Alexander, TY Hilton, Bryce Brown etc during the season. As others have said, this strategy can work, but I think it makes health and playing the WW much, much more important to fill the holes on your roster.
touchdowntwitaker 2 Posted August 26, 2013 You can do it in years where you are confident you found sleepers are gonna hit . I did it last year because I was confident in Cobb Morris and tony g having big years. If you aren't confident you have picks available at minimum bids you can't do it. It would work if you think Cameron thompkis lacy Gordon givens or players if that status are going to explode
BTL99 34 Posted August 27, 2013 Very interesting and some great points made. Thanks.
Matt Mueller 146 Posted August 27, 2013 I'd be fine with going big on rbs-wrs but if I went that route I'd draft Romo for pennies and not go big on Brees.
We Tigers 71 Posted August 27, 2013 I had an auction yesterday where someone tried to do this, but could never get the 4th player. Burned $140 of $200 on Peterson, McCoy, and Lynch--very good value overall on those guys, to be honest--but had absolutely no bidding power afterwards. With 12 roster spots left to fill, his max bid was $49, and he ended up getting outbid on every mid-level player and finished the draft with $20 leftover. Totally mismanaged.
Fantasy Noob 10 Posted August 27, 2013 Depends on the size of the league really. In ten teamers or smaller definitely want as many elite players as possible and the waiver wire should offer a ton of options. 12 teams and larger it gets tricky. I like to blow 75% of my budget on "my guys" then just sit tight till the end of the draft. While you wait make sure to throw out players in whatever position is deepest or that anyone on autobid will buy at too high a price I am thinking the 1st2nd tier QB's (I really like the QB options late this year with Eli/Vick/Cutler/RG3/Luck frequently lasting till late in auction) and any TE. By the end of the draft you will probably have more money than most with an elite core of 4 guys and load up on a ton of quality.
phillyjinx 21 Posted August 28, 2013 I've been going the studs and duds route the last two years. Its risky but I believe if you know your sheet and don't get bit by the injury bug you can create a monster team. In my particular 12 team ppr league we keep 1 player every year but we have to add $5 too last years value. I kept Dez for $15. Then I drafted: B Marsh $45 Shady $59 Spiller $45 Kenbrell $7 Stafford $10 Cameron $5 Golden Tate $2 Alshon $3 Bryce Brown $1 Christine Michael $1 Dwyer $1 Weeded $1 Êtrz $1 I'm happy with my team and feel confident I can get more depth thru the wire. Plus shady and spiller are on bye week 12 so I have plenty of time to make my team stronger.
Maroon Bells 18 Posted August 28, 2013 Don't spend your entire bank on the 4 top players from last year. You want the best players this year. How do you know who they are? That's the challenge. But with research you can get a pretty good idea, and the beauty of it is, they won't cost you near as much. I can almost guarantee you one thing: that the top 4 players this year will almost certainly be different than who they were last year. Because it happens every year. Typically, of the conensus top 10 players one year, about 5 will be there the following year.
