****The Official Seattle Seahawks Offseason Thread 2014****

Recommended Posts

Tate is rumored to have taken less money to go to Detroit. Mind boggling

Turns out that rumor was false. Seattle offered a much lower deal up until the last minute, and even then they were lower.

So far, we've lost some contributing players, but nobody I would consider a core player. While teams like Denver are playing for one year upcoming and then blowing up their team and rebuilding, we continue to plod along, trying to manage long term success. No worries.

Our updated current available cap total: 17,267,088

some of that cap may need to go to restructuring the contracts for Earl and Sherm. Offsetting would be possible release of Zach Miller.

At present we have a OL of Okung-Bailey-Unger-Sweezy-Bowie with Frenchie for depth at C, Fat Ginger for depth at LG or LT, that Roten guy from Green Bay (guard I think?). Is there anyone else? We are going to need some draft picks here.

I would also not mind if we tried to trade for David Quessenberry (Texans RT). I really liked that guy last year heading up to the draft and thought he would fit our scheme really well. Houston took him in the 6th, but he got injured early and was put on IR. This is just spitballing, but the Texans released Owen Daniels and all they have I think is James Casey at TE (who is sort of a glorified H-back) unless I'm forgetting somebody. Why not offer Miller in trade to Houston, ask for Quessenberry and a pick back in return? They run a zone-blocking offense there anyway. Miller might have to agree to restructure though and maybe he'd rather just take his chances in free agency. Also Houston could simply keep Quessenberry and their pick and just try to draft someone, but they might be concerned that all the best TEs fly off the board in between their 1st round pick and their 2nd round pick (e.g., Amaro, Ebron, etc.). Someone like Miller could be a great safety valve for whomever they take at QB with their 1st pick.

Here ya go...

C

Max Unger. No change. Played with one arm all year. Will be healthier next year.

Lemuel Jeanpierre. Free agent. Decent backup. Could come back. EDIT: SIGNED ONE YEAR DEAL

OG: will need bodies

JR Sweezey: No change.

Paul McQuistan: Free agent. Out of our price range to resign.

James Carpenter: Next year he is a free agent. The savings are probably a little over a million to cut him, but I'd still cut him.

Greg Van Roten: Will compete.

OT

Russell Okung: No change.

Breno Giacomini: Free agent. Would love to bring him back since he is a starter. 2 year, 8 million? Or one year deal? EDIT: SIGNED WITH NYJETS

Michael Bowie: No change

Alvin Bailey: No change

Caylin Hauptmann: Signed for next year. Will compete for a spot.

Long snapper:

Clint Gresham: No change.

I'd like to see Carpenter go just like the rest of you. But I'd wait until after the draft to see how much we need him. At least he'd be insurrance if the draft doesn't unfold how they'd like it to.

And if we get some players, then cut him. Doesn't matter if it's a late cut, we don't owe him anything as far as him finding a new home.

That Tjax resigning is great (I havn't seen any numbers yet)

My priorities for myself as a fan are 5 things right now. Get Hatcher signed, I think this will be very valuable for us.

Restructure Miller. I was on the fence before about just flat out releasing him to save money. But by losing Giacominni, I think it'll be imperative to keep Zack around.

I'd still really like to keep Hauschka.

Extend Thomas.

And now that Tate is gone. Let's get Baldwin to sign his tender. And then we can work on a long term deal for him.

We probably have enough cap room to sign one new to the team meaningful impact player. Just. One.

The rest of the cap is for the draft, maintaining, restocking, bargain hunting, and extending.

I totally forgot about Carp, but I think he's outstayed his welcome. I agree though, figure out who is better than him first, then cut afterwards.

Well, I really thought that by cutting Clemons and possibly restructuring Miller that the Hawks would have the means to keep both Tate and Giacomini. So I'm guessing this will enable them to keep the guys see they view as core guys such as Sherman and Thomas. I am expecting these guys to be signed long term. Now that the crazy first wave of FA is almost over, the Hawks can now get down to doing what they do best. With Ware in Denver I'm hoping we can bring in Allen on a team friendly deal. Restructure Miller because as Kopy said, he is an important cog to keep around. If Finley is cleared medically he might be an interesting option at a discounted price, especially as a Red Zone target for Wilson.

Not a lot of premium material really out there at positions we might want.

TE - Finley (GB)

OG - Davin Joseph (TB), Terrelle Wharton (CAR)

WR - Edelman (NE), Nicks (NYG), J. Jones (GB)

DL - Hatcher (DAL), Raji (GB)

If I had to guess, I'd say it's Hatcher. Least able to find a viable alternative in draft this year.

Of these guys you listed I would say the only two worth a shot would be Hatcher and Finely, I'd also add Jared Allen to the mix as well.

I'm kind of warming up to Steve Smith for a short term deal.

could see that. He's also a good blocking WR which in our offense is pretty important.

Two reasons I say no:

1- Terrible locker room presence

2- He's 5'9 and 35. The Seahawks want to get bigger and younger and faster.

We also brought in Antoine Winfield for a look-see, and he was pushing daisies too. Ultimately he got beat out by Thurmond, but still, if we think a guy can add quality to the team, they'll give him a shot. Let the best man win. Most of the time, an older guy who has lost a step or two is not going to beat out a younger guy, even with more experience.

I don't remember him being a terrible locker room presence though. Didn't he help out Cam Newton early on when that guy was trying to establish himself? Maybe this is about him vs. Delhomme or something?

It's starting to make the rounds that if Jermichael Finley passes his physical, he will be a Seahawk. He seems to have cancelled all other upcoming visits to other teams.

If you sign Finley and cut Zach Miller, it frees up several million in cap space theoretically. I guess they go Finely, Willson, McCoy at TE.

I suppose I'd be O.K. with this as long as we drafted a good RT, and we'd have to make sure we nailed that pick. Because Finley ain't gonna help block no one.

Hatcher went to Washington. Alittle disappointed we didn't get him in for a visit, but when Snyder opens his checkbook, that's the way it works.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports the Seahawks are interested in re-signing free agent Sidney Rice.

Rice could take Golden Tate's old spot on the perimeter of Seattle's offense. Rice was released by the Seahawks in a needed cap maneuver, but the club still believes he can help their passing game. When healthy, Rice remains an effective winner of jump-balls and can score touchdowns. He's also only 27.

Richard Sherman feuds with LeGarrette Blount, DeAngelo Hall on Twitter

Richard Sherman believes he’s the best cornerback in the NFL and he’s willing to defend that title against anyone who wants to question his abilities. That put LeGarrette Blount and DeAngelo Hall in the cross-hairs on Thursday. In a lengthy back-and-forth with both players via their Twitter accounts, Sherman defended his view that he’s the best cornerback in the league against perceived slights by Blount and Hall. Blount called newly signed Denver Broncos cornerback Aqib Talib the league’s best cornerback in a tweet directed at Sherman. Sherman chalked it up to friendship between Blount and Talib, who played together in both Tampa Bay and New England. But Blount defended his belief that Talib was better and the two began to debate their respective positions. Blount pointed to the fact Sherman doesn’t tend to follow an opposing team’s best receiver all over the field, instead sticking on the left side and playing whoever lines up across from him. Hall voiced the same point in his own, separate war of words with Sherman. Sherman responded by pointing to the fact he led the league in interceptions last year despite being the least targeted corner in the league. And in regards to not following the opponent’s best target like Talib and Hall, his responses basically boiled down to “and how did that work out for you guys? We won a Super Bowl.“ There was far more to the conversations than we will detail here but It was an entertaining give-and-take between players confident in their abilities and willing to back their opinions. And ultimately it doesn’t hurt that Sherman is rarely willing to walk away from a challenge.

i've been on record as being a fan of Rice, just not at that contract price. He has good hands, toughness, gets separation, is a redzone target, and is basically a perfect #2 WR. But they will rotate in Baldwin and Kearse frequently. By adding back Rice, bringing in Finley, and having Harvin healthy, this team suddenly becomes a much, much more potent offensive team, not so dependent on defense to win so many games. It's a shift to depending on Wilson even more as he continues to mature and let's face it, we accumulated so much talent on defense, we couldn't possibly hold onto all of it. And facing the defenses in the NFC West, you have to find ways to score.

Steven Hauschka is talking with Washington. Uh, oh.

Focking Walter Focking Thurmond is talking with San Fran. I don't want this guy back if he were playing for free. Even Golden Tate turned down a talk with San Fran, and he couldn't wait to leave.

I don't see too many obvious moves left. Bargain hunting for sure, add some high upside guys. Draft for offensive line help. Replace anybody else that leaves, like the kicker maybe.

Henry Melton coming in for a visit today.

Goes into the category of bargain shopping for a player coming off an injury.

Bringing in Melton to replace McDonald would be a nice upgrade.

I'd be o.k. with this too.

Not as good as Hatcher in my book. But younger, and probably way cheaper. Because of his injury, probably a prove it type deal. You can't go wrong with that.

I'd rather have him than McDonald too. Between McDaniel and McDonald, we already made the right choice.

Anyone got a list of FA kickers and draft eligable kickers that would be a good replacement if we lost Hauschka?

That's 1 position I've kind of ignored. I guess I just assumed Hauschka would stay for some reason.

I guess we keep beating the bushes, determined to sign another defensive lineman with upside.

Makes perfect sense. This year is weak for DL in draft. Keep that DL fresh all game and watch the LOB destroy WRs.

Brandon Browner 3 YR/17 Mill with New England.

Wow. Great for him. After the league ass focked him with the ludicrous drug rules when he wasn't even in the league. He got a ring on the sidelines this year. And still got a payday that we could not possibly give him. Don't be so quick to give Denver a free pass to the Super Bowl. Adding Revis and Browner to NE secondary and all those returning players, NE has to be in the mix.

Well, this is certainly a very positive result. Among all the key moves we needed the team to make this off season, restructuring Miller was among the most important. Nobody wanted to see him go, but him raking in 6 to 7 million a year this year and next year was ridiculous. Now, it's 3 million base with another million in incentives, so we can keep him for 2 years. Terrific. He's an unsung hero doing the dirty work and spending a lot of time blocking because out offensive line lately has been injured and basically sucked.

Of course, this does not affect the potential signing of Jermichael Finley in anyway, because the vision of 2 TE sets is still dancing in my head. Last year's offense was lackluster because so much of it was built around Harvin, who got hurt early, so the offense became vanilla because they could not run it. Having Harvin lining up all over the field, along with Finley lining up all over the field, while Miller is still in there being dependable.....*drool*

And we picked up somewhere around another 3 million to the cap this year. I think we are around 20 million under now. We can still sign one, and now maybe two, impact free agents. Or just extend guys willy nilly.

Is it possible we now have enough cap space to extend Thomas, extend Sherman, re-sign our kicker, pay our draft picks and maybe sign another FA?.

Maybe. Unfortunately, the market has made the corners and safeties very, very pricey this offseason. You could do one of them, and do everything else you mentioned. Both? Eh, that would be tight.

Henry Melton is still in Seattle today. He was supposed to visit Dallas this weekend. He might be seriously negotiating with Seattle.

As far as Pryor, I have no problem with that move. He's a legitimate starting QB in the league that could really benefit from film room study sessions with Russell Wilson to complement those wheels of his. TJax isn't going to be around forever so we could certainly develop a young guy behind him. If it's for a 6th or 7th rounder, why not? He'd be between 600 to 700 thousand to the cap this year, last year of this contract.
