If Bennett signs elsewhere, you think we extend Avril?

Bennett is probably gone, gone, gone. He got his ring and now he wants to be paid. His brother is on Chicago, and Oakland has a lot of cap space, so he's gone.

Well, they won't cut Clemons, to start with. Hey, second year back from knee surgery, so he'll be good to go from the jump. We'd need to fish around in free agency and bargain shop for a versatile DE/DT pass rusher to replace Bennett, and maybe consider spending that first round pick on the D-line. Supposedly Jesse Williams knee is completely healed up and that would be like adding a first round pick value player to the roster if what Pete said is true, and maybe Jordan Hill can contribute this year so maybe the DT position will be OK, but you can't have enough edge rushers to rotate. Avril and Clemons are couple of excellent book ends, but you need more bodies. They could extend Avril, but they should wait to see how everything shakes out and do extensions much later on.

It's been pretty quiet on the resigning front. I don't think we've tendered anything on Angry Doug Baldwin yet either, so he could walk away.

I think they are waiting the market out. See if we can get Tate and/or Bennett cheaper or if they become to expensive we just move on.

I think all free agents this year are expendable.

Between this year and next year we have some of the biggest prizes to get resigned between: Thomas, Sherman, Wilson, Wagner, SB MVP, Maxwell, Avril if we lose Bennett and/or Clemmons.

I think this years free agents need to come at the right deal/cheap or they arn't coming back. I think Bennet is gone.

I think we only keep 1 of the 2 wides, but we'll wait out the heavy WR market for when guy's go unsigned.

But, I sure would like to see us lock up Thomas and Sherman sometime soon this year though!

Here we go.

"Seahawks extended a second-round tender on restricted free agent Doug Baldwin.

The tender is worth $2.187 million. Another team could sign Baldwin if they're willing to give up a second-round pick, though that's unlikely to happen. Baldwin posted a career best 778 receiving yards and five touchdowns in 2013 and could return as Seattle's No. 2 receiver if they fail to re-sign Golden Tate"

Seattle also resigned S Jeron Johnson and our backup C. I can never say his name right, so I'll call him Frenchie.

Both to 1 year deals. Per rotoworld.

Doubtful. Avril is good at what he does, but he's a one trick pony. Bennett is a versatile anchor.

I keep updating my original comprehensive posts at the beginning of this thread for these updates.

I'll glad we got a few things done.

The Niners have four picks on Day 2 (2.24, 2.29, 3.13, 3.30).

They need WRs.

Baldwin went to Stanford.

Seahawks are their arch-enemies.

What would be the downside of them offering a 2nd rounder for Baldwin? If they do, how does this process work? Is it up to him which team he picks?

I think it's:

Franchise - The player can be signed by anyone. We get to match the deal to keep him, or get 2 first rounders.

If nothing happens and they play under the tag, they play 1 year for us at an average of the top 5 players at their position.

Transition - The player can be signed by anyone. We get to match the deal to keep him, or get a first and a third.

If nothing happens and they play under the tag, they play 1 year for us at an average of the top 10 players at their position.

RFA- Any team can choose to sign a player at the dollar amount the player was tendered. (So for Baldwin it would be the 2.2mil.)

We would then have 5 days to decide if we want to keep him. If we do, he stays. If we decide not to keep him, we get the corresponding round draft pick. I think it would be the highest round pick the other team has. So for the 49ers example, it would be their 2.24

But don't quote me on none of that sh!t. It tends to get rather confusing sometimes.

I keep hearing Will Smiths name being thrown around.

Like a 2 year, essentive based contract.

Geez, you might as well send Baldwin to Siberia. Baldwin played for Harbaugh at Stanford and hates his stupid ass. He'd retire before playing for him. Same with Richard Sherman.

Michael Bennett linked to the Bears.

Yep. No surprise. Look at it this way, we got a great year out of him, and a 3rd pick in next year's draft as compensation. The way the market is trending right now, the Bears are going to overspend on Bennett.

The market is out of control when idiots like the Vikings give Everson Griffen a five-year, $42.5 million contract with $20 million in guaranteed money. I mean if Griffen is worth that what is Bennett worth? :dunno: So long Bennett, thanks for the SB run

You can just feel it. Some teams are going to go wild in spending right off the bat when free agency opens. The demand to win now and the quick fix is the only way to keep your job as GM/coach, teams are going to panic into bad contracts.

Just have to be patient. We've lost Sidney Rice, Red Bryant, and soon we will lose Michael Bennett. No worries. Plenty of room to restock with less expensive options, resign the young core players, and then do some bargain shopping along the way. Bennett, Avril, McDaniel were all bang for the buck additions last year. Winfield was the only one that didn't work out.

The only names I've heard in rumored connected to Seattle thus far are Jermichael Finley and Jared Allen. Finley hasn't passed a physical yet, so who knows. Allen wants to play for a contender and could fill a need for a cheap price, but the Seattle trend is going much younger and they are already ridiculously young. Other than Lawyer Milloy and Antoine Winfield and I guess Leon Washington, we don't have a history of pursuing old guys as role players under Pete and John. But then again, he is a Minnesota Viking, so automatically makes him a possibility to sign with Seattle as that pipeline is gushing along (Bevell, Rice, Jackson, Winfield, Harvin)

The Packers are idiots too: 4 years 39 million for Sam Shields? So Sherman is worth what? :dunno:

It's this sudden rise of the cap. Some teams are salivating at quick fixes. Others are locking up good players at great player prices. They are ignoring all the high profile players that were cut this offseason due to cap issues or expensive contracts.

Short term vision.

You hit the nail on the head earlier. The Hawks need to sit back, relax, and take advantage of the bargains that present themselves. If teams want to throw crazy money at Bennett, Tate, and others, so be it. Stay the course.

It's exploded all over the place that Bennett is expected to resign with the Seahawks and the Bears have given up their interest.

Wow. That was certainly a shift. I don't know if I'm on board. Depends on the contract, but I know I won't like how much it will be for. Best to front load it as much as possible, so that extending the key guys for next season won't interfere with a fat Bennett deal.

Rumor is 4 years/32 million. Eh, not that bad actually, if true. Below his market value after all.

It seemingly comes down to taxes. If the Bears offered a million more per year, the Chicago city tax rate/Illinois state tax would wipe out at least half of that million advantage if not maybe 3/4 of it. Then you'd be leaving a team you love playing for and an area you love and a team you just won a title with to play with your brother for about a couple hundred thousand more per year. I mean, do you really want you hang out with your brother every day? I'd get bored with that in a hurry. I get bored at Thanksgiving after two hours with my family. It's not that huge of an advantage that Chicago could really offer, unless they really offer a helluva lot more money.

Oh, and people have fun playing for Pete Carroll.

In that case, welcome back Michael Bennett.

My recent pessimism was wasted. Which is a contradiction to my initial declarative postings in the thread. I'm so confused. But in a good way.

DE: in flux

Michael Bennett; Free agent. Have to resign him, he wants to stay. Get it done today.

great news on Bennett. He and Avril can continue to line up all over the place on the D-line. Frees up dollars from Clemons that we can put towards Earl, Sherm or possibly Tate.

And it's front loaded, which is more beneficial I believe, although the rolling cap money to the next year may have changed that benefit a bit from what I've come to understand.

The only downside is that it may keep Sherman from getting an extension this off season. Maybe. Clemons is probably 50/50 on whether he gets cut; his salary is 9+ million but it would save only 7.5 million to the cap this year as it would count 2.5 million dead money to the cap, and then you'd have to sign a Clemons replacement anyway.

Funny how in the playoffs some people were actually arguing that Revis was a better corner than Richard Sherman, and Revis is going to get cut today.

Wondering if the Jets make a run at Golden Tate? Cut Santonio Holmes yesterday, John Idzik the GM?

I'm quite surprised neither Clemons or Miller have restructured at this point.

Idzik is a cap specialist. He knows it's a buyers market for WR. He wouldn't splurge for a WR. He is going to bargain shop, so if he gets Tate, it's because nobody wants to sign him.

Clemons is in limbo most likely because of the late developing Bennett situation and what his contract was going to cost, and the unknown status of some unsigned Dlinemen, like McDonald and McDaniel.

Miller, not sure about. Maybe they want to see if there are any better, cheaper options out there? Maybe they are currently working on a restructure behind the scenes, along with Clemons. It just hasn't leaked.

Seattle actually resigned Anthony McCoy yesterday too. That kinda flew under the radar with the Bennett signing. But maybe this is leverage in order for Miller to restructure?

I also didn't realise until today that all LB's - Wagner, Wright and Smith are all FA's next year. Wagner would be a must resign next year, but those other 2 could be iffey (We'd still need to redo Wilson, Baldwin, on O and Sherman and Maxwell along with Wagner on D) I'm also assuming Thomas's extention will be a done deal this year too.

But my initial point was. I would'nt be surprised if we draft a couple LB's in this years draft just to cover our bases.

Carroll and Schnieder like to stay a play ahead and it looks like the big bucks on the D go to the secondary and the edge rushers.

The DT's and LB's (outside of MLB) are the cheaper guys. Out with the old in with the new, lets keep plugging and drafting.

Owen Daniels got cut, so some TEs are out there as options I guess. I would like to think Anthony McCoy would replace Kellen Davis on the final roster.

Yep, basically nearly all of our LBs and defensive secondary contracts expire next season. Sherman, Thomas, Maxwell, and now Jeron Johnson all expire; Chancellor is signed and I think we have Lane and Simon at least one more year. Agreed, the front office will churn the LBs as they will not sign them for any kind of money as all of it will go to pass rushers and the DBs.

O'Brien Scoefield signs with NY Giants for a shocking amount of money.

Golden Tate visiting with Detroit

Walter Thurmond visiting with Jacksonville

Edit: Breno Giacomini visiting with the NY Jets

Well, other than Jax and Gus Bradley continuing to pick over our leftovers (Will Blackmon, Winston Guy, Red Bryant), we are due to get a bunch of compensation picks in 2015 for teams eager to pick up our leftovers who we didn't pick up with much capital to begin with. Sweet.
