vuduchile 1,945 Posted December 7, 2015 Statesman. If nothing else, he brought us glasnost and perestroika. Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev (/ˈɡɔrbəˌtʃɔːf, -ˌtʃɒf/;[1] Russian: Михаи́л Серге́евич Горбачёв, tr. Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachov; IPA: [mʲɪxɐˈil sʲɪrˈɡʲejɪvʲɪtɕ ɡərbɐˈtɕɵf]; born 2 March 1931) is a former Soviet statesman. He was the eighth and last leader of the Soviet Union, having served as General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union from 1985 until 1991 when the party was dissolved. He served as the country's head of state from 1988 until its dissolution in 1991 (titled as Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet from 1988 to 1989, as Chairman of the Supreme Soviet from 1989 to 1990, and as President of the Soviet Union from 1990 to 1991). He was the only general secretary in the history of the Soviet Union to have been born after the October Revolution. Gorbachev's policies of glasnost ("openness") and perestroika ("restructuring") and his reorientation of Soviet strategic aims contributed to the end of the Cold War. He removed the constitutional role of the Communist Party in governing the state, and inadvertently led to the dissolution of the Soviet Union. He was awarded the Otto Hahn Peace Medal in 1989, the Nobel Peace Prize in 1990 and the Harvey Prize in 1992, as well as honorary doctorates from various universities. vuduchile 1,945 Posted December 7, 2015 For when my turn rolls around again: I doubt she's on anybody's radar. I met this woman in the mid 80's while she was headlining a concert with Bo Diddly in Dallas, TX. (It was a very odd lineup). I was managing the men's department in a store that was putting on this benefit concert and fashion show. My ex wife was one of the models in the show and at one point, this woman mentioned to her that both she and her husband needed some new clothes. My ex told her to come see me, so she did. We outfitted Lenny with the works while she went off with the store mgr to hobnob with the socialites. When she came back to get him, she thanked me profusely and have me a smack on the lips in front of everyone. Then she told me to come backstage after the show. Bo Diddly was great, this chick was ok, but not really my kinda music. My ex wife and I went backstage after the show and drank with them all for awhile. When we left, she regifted me a big bouquet of roses that someone had given her after the show. She gave me another smooch, and we went home. My crazy kunt of an ex wife hated that anyone else was the center of attention, so she was pissy all night and for several weeks thereafter. Once again, she ruined what should have been a pretty decent party for me. Anyway, lots of people fell in love with Natalie Wood when they saw West Side story. But it was the spicy Puerto Rican who went on to win the actress triple crown that have me a boner. Only a handful of performers have ever won an Oscar, a Tony, a Grammy and an Emmy. Rita Moreno - Performing Artist is one of them.

Voltaire 5,207 Posted December 8, 2015 First we roll with Mencius - Adviser The second greatest Confuscian after Confucius himself, he was a student of Confuscius' grandson, Zisi. Wrote The Book of Mencius an enormously popular and important book throught Chinese history. Wheras Confucius' wisdom comes in short bits of wisdom, the ideal size to fit in fortune cookies (which don't exist in China), Mensicus's wisdom is more in depth as that it looks more Socratic in that it comes in the form of dialogues he has with the Kings he meets in his forty years of travel as an itnerant scholar throughout China. (Kings not Emperors, this is the era leading up to and then entering the Warring States years in China). The Book of Mencius contains advice not just for kings but everybody in every day life too. --------- The scond coice is also an adviser Phemonoe - Adviser I don't know so much about her, as she dates back to Greek pre-history. What I do know is that throughout Greek and Roman antiquity, the Oracle of Delphi was consulted constantly as a source of wisdom and advice and held in high regard and this was a postion of great authority, one held exclusivly by women. As you know, women in Greece were treated as second rate citizens, but any priestess at Delphi, not just the Oracle, could go out into society of men and attend or give lectures. Such was the power of the office. Greeks and Romans were big on prophecy and superstition bullsh*t, no major endevor was conducted without considering it, and Delphi was the place to go to gather such wisdom. Women who became the Oracle would give up their name and identity and duties to their family to become known only as the Oracle of Delphi. There must have been dozens, if not hundreds of them as the tradition stretches from Greek pre-history through Classic Greek, through the Roman times all the way until the early Christian era of Rome. The location of Apollo's shrine a tDelphi is known and is a popular tourist destination. It sits on a crevas where three tactonic plates faults cross each other. In antiquity, but no more, the ground spewed up gas from the earth that caused anyone (or anything, according to the story the chasm was allegdly discovered by a wandering goat and then his shepherd who both got stoned on the vapors) to have convulsions. One theory is the ground would spew up etheline, which in sufficient doses can induce the kind of spasms and movements described by Plutarch (who'd served as a male priest at Delphi and thus witnessed many prophecies first hand and wrote in depth about the process). Another that the Oracle would use oleander as a compliment during prophecies which had the same effect. The woman would sit on a tripod stool right over a spewing fissure in the ground in the haze and appear to be possessed by Apollo and then writhe around on the floor speaking poetry in iambic pentameter verse. After the prophecy she would be totally phsyically spent and weak with exertion, she'd need to be People witnessing this would also be inhaling the stuff in smaller doses and also feel lightheaded in the ...er.... presense of Apollo. The process was so overwhelming that even after some dillweed fell in love with and then kidnapped raped a hot young virgin Oracle (an Oracle's purity is reserved for Apollo) and highly offended the Delphi community so much that they swithced to using 50 year old spinsters for the job. Such was the power of the position that it was aparently still worth the price of admission to watch grandma flopping around on the floor. I went looknig for if I could tag a name on the first Oracle of Delphi and was successful. The name of the first stoned chick from pre-history who started this circus act is claimed to be Phemonoe, a daughter of Apollo. As a bonus, the the Oracles are credited with introducing iamic pentameter poetry into Greek and so Phemonoe is credited with inventing the art form as well. titans&bucs&bearsohmy! 2,745 Posted December 8, 2015 I will select Livia Drusilla, AKA Livia Julia - Great Woman She was wife to Augustus, after making her former husband divorce her so she was free to do so. She was mother to Emperor Tiberius, and Grandmother to Emperors Claudius, Caligula, and Nero. For Most of Augustus' reign, she was much of the power behind the throne. She built his cult of personallity, ultimately leading to his deification by the Senate. Rumor has it she also carefully managed his affairs, and had numerous rivals poisoned, either to clear the way, or to gain their wealth for the state. After Augustus' death, she basically ruled in place of thier son, Tiberius, who ran off to the Isle of Capri to have orgies rather than be near her. Upon her death, the Emperor Claudius, in accordance with an oath she made him swear, had her diefied as Livia Augusta. So one could say she was the first Empress of Rome. It's more beleivable than Bear's story about how he bought that file cabinet that had been used to store drugs for Timothy Leary is more out there and I don't doubt that one. I just wonder if you and Bear may have run across each other at some point. It's not out of the question. You two were in Dallas at the same time (I think). Local bands do stuff like this all the time so there's a decent chance he'd have been invited to participate in an event in a department store with Bo Diddley and Rita Moreno. You may even sold him a sweater or coat as I'm sure he shopped for clothes in the 80s. You've got me reading about her. Apparetly she didn't like her early roles at all since they had her typecast as a barefoot Mexican hottie in Westerns which she found condescending but she took them since they paid well and that was what available to her at the time. Ahhh. Yes. Got it. It's certainly possible we crossed paths at some point. I was in Dallas/Plano for about 10 years. After I left Foley's, I worked at a place downtown in Rennassaince Tower, then out at the Galleria and eventually at NorthPark My brother and I played the open jams at Greenville Ave Bar and Grill and one other bar over in Deep Ellum when he first started teaching me to play guitar. As for Rita, she is really quite a personality. Even at 50ish, she exuded a certain "larger than life" vibe in real life. She was also honored at the Kennedy Center this past Sunday. That show will air Dec 29 on CBS.

iam90sbaby 2,503 Posted December 8, 2015 Muḥammad ibn Mūsā al-Khwārizmī (mathematician) - Al-Khwarizmi was a Persian mathematician, astronomer, and geographer who lived during the Abbasid Caliphate which was the third of the Islamic caliphates to succeed the Islamic prophet Muhammad. A scholar in the House of Wisdom in Baghdad, his contribution to the field of mathematics, especially algebra, has been phenomenal. He was considered the original inventor of algebra by the scholars in Renaissance Europe though later it became known that his work is based on older Indian or Greek sources. But the fact that the word “Algebra” is derived from ‘al-jabr’, one of the two operations he used to solve quadratic equations is a testimonial to the role he played in the development of this particular field of mathematics. Some of his work was based on Persian and Babylonian astronomy, Indian numbers, and Greek mathematics and he was known for his systematic approach to solving linear and quadratic equations. Apart from mathematics, he was also highly skilled and knowledgeable in the fields of astronomy and geography. He corrected and revised Ptolemy's data for Africa and the Middle East, and also wrote on the subject of astrology. His works also include a treatise on the Hebrew calendar in which he describes the 19-year intercalation cycle Arnold Orville Beckman (inventor) - Arnold Orville Beckman was a famous chemist, inventor and philanthropist from America. With a keen insight and eye for detail, Arnold always had a knack for solving problems. It was in his childhood that he chanced upon a textbook in chemistry and thus began his life-long association with the subject. While still in school, Beckman founded a business venture that analysed the composition of natural gas. While working at the Western Electric Company he gained an in-depth understanding of electronic circuits. He utilised his knowledge of chemistry and electronics to solve many problems in his later life. He developed the world’s first pH meter that was used to measure acidity of a given solution. He then created a device that could calculate the energy of light in visible, infra-red and UV spectrum. He modified the potentiometers used in the pH meter to develop the helipot that could be used in airplanes and ships. The chemist also worked with Californian government in their efforts to mitigate the harmful effects of Los Angeles smog. He was also involved in the Manhattan Project, which created the nuclear bombs. Orville invented the dosimeter which could indicate the levels of exposure to ionizing radiation. The contributions of this inventor to the human race are numerous.
Voltaire 5,207 Posted December 9, 2015 Great pick in Al-Khwarizmi. That was my #1 mathematician on the board. I have to reevaluate that category now. All along, I really wanted to bounce Maxwell out to physics but that plan was based on landing Al-Khwarizmi, I don't know if I can pull it off now. My physics options are deep-deep-deep; math not so. Voltaire 5,207 Posted December 9, 2015 Karl Benz - Inventor Karl Friedrich Benz (German: [kaɐ̯l ˈfʁiːdʁɪç ˈbɛnts] About this sound listen (help·info); November 25, 1844 – April 4, 1929) was a German engine designer and engineer, generally regarded as the inventor of the first automobile powered by an internal combustion engine, and together with Bertha Benz, pioneering founder of the automobile manufacturer Mercedes-Benz which is now one of the leading car brands. Other German contemporaries, Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach working as partners, also worked on similar types of inventions, without knowledge of the work of the other, but Benz received a patent for his work first, and, subsequently patented all the processes that made the internal combustion engine feasible for use in an automobile. In 1879, his first engine patent was granted to him, and in 1886, Benz was granted a patent for his first automobile. ------- Cardinal Richelieu - Adviser Armand Jean du Plessis, Cardinal-Duke of Richelieu and of Fronsac (French pronunciation: [aʁmɑ̃ ʒɑ̃ dy plɛsi]; 9 September 1585 – 4 December 1642), commonly referred to as Cardinal Richelieu (French: Cardinal de Richelieu [kaʁdinal d(ə) ʁiʃ(ə)ljø]), was a French clergyman, noble and statesman. He was consecrated as a bishop in 1607 and was appointed Foreign Secretary in 1616. Richelieu soon rose in both the Catholic Church and the French government, becoming a cardinal in 1622, and King Louis XIII's chief minister in 1624. He remained in office until his death in 1642; he was succeeded by Cardinal Mazarin, whose career he had fostered. The Cardinal de Richelieu was often known by the title of the King's "Chief Minister" or "First Minister". He sought to consolidate royal power and crush domestic factions. By restraining the power of the nobility, he transformed France into a strong, centralized state. His chief foreign policy objective was to check the power of the Austro-Spanish Habsburg dynasty, and to ensure French dominance in the Thirty Years' War that engulfed Europe. Although he was a cardinal, he did not hesitate to make alliances with Protestant rulers in attempting to achieve his goals. While a powerful political figure, events like the Day of the Dupes show that in fact he very much depended on the King's confidence to keep this power. Richelieu was also famous for his patronage of the arts; most notably, he founded the Académie Française, the learned society responsible for matters pertaining to the French language. Richelieu is also known by the sobriquet l'Éminence rouge ("the Red Eminence"), from the red shade of a cardinal's clerical dress and the style "eminence" as a cardinal. As an advocate for Samuel de Champlain and of the retention of New France, he founded the Compagnie des Cent-Associés and saw the Treaty of Saint-Germain-en-Laye return Quebec City to French rule under Champlain, after the settlement had been taken by the Kirkes in 1629. This in part allowed the colony to eventually develop into the heartland of Francophone culture in North America. He is also a leading character in The Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas and its numerous film adaptations.

John Stuart Mill - Thinker John Stuart Mill (20 May 1806 – 8 May 1873) was an English philosopher, political economist, feminist, and civil servant. He was an influential contributor to social theory, political theory and political economy. He has been called "the most influential English-speaking philosopher of the nineteenth century".[3] Mill's conception of liberty justified the freedom of the individual in opposition to unlimited state control.[4] Mill expresses his view on freedom by illustrating how an individual's drive to better their station, and for self-improvement, is the sole source of true freedom. Only when an individual is able to attain such improvements, without impeding others in their own efforts to do the same, can true freedom prevail. Mill's linking of freedom and self-improvement has inspired many. By establishing that individual efforts to excel have worth, Mill was able to show how they should achieve self-improvement without harming others, or society at large. He was a proponent of utilitarianism, an ethical theory developed by Jeremy Bentham. He worked on the theory of the scientific method.[5] Mill was also a Member of Parliament belonging to the Liberal Party, as well as an important figure in liberal political philosophy. He's in Jerryskids' sig, not in one of our drafters'. But yeah, jerry follows along as a lurker and being around the Geek Club, you see jerry's sig regularly. And speaking of sigs, Islam has either passed or certainly made up a heck of a lot of ground on Christianity in the >220 years since the quote in your sig was uttered. https://p.majuwe.com/p.php?d=www.fftodayforums.com&s=
Voltaire 5,207 Posted December 10, 2015 I just got a PM. We're not going to see much if any of 90sbaby for the next 5-8 days. Along with that news was a long list of names: 17 of them. So we're set there. What's keeping 90sbaby gone for 5-8 days, he didn't say. I wonder if it's Kentucky uncle related. Right now it's Bear's turn/ When it's Vudu's, Vudu can go twice as if he were on a corner while 90sbaby is away. I'll keep 90sbaby's picks updated as we go since it's highly unlikely that Vudu will snag one of 90sbaby's picks.
iam90sbaby 2,503 Posted December 10, 2015 Yes it has to do with my uncle, I have to be there and I won't be able to dedicate any time this week honestly, even if I have wifi. I sent my list I'd love if you put a little write up for my picks because I know some of them at A++. Don't hijack any of my f*cking picks Volty. By the way this is to fun.. I've learned a lot just from google and catching up on lost information. Maybe we should do another draft after this? Movie/Series Character draft?
