Reading article behind a paywall

Recommended Posts

You can try to see if it is archived at archive.is

If you find a site that offers say five free articles a month, or however many so long as they offer some, you can archive the link and read it at archive.is

Another benefit of using archive.is, since most of these outlets with paywalls are leftist legacy media newspapers, is that the media outlet is deprived of revenue and clicks. I only read NYTimes or WaPo using archive.is.

Thank you, sir.  I knew you had used something in the past to link and I once had it saved but no longer and forgot what it was called.

Any hacks?

On Firefox, get the extension "behind the overlay". It's awesome. I think its available for Chrome also.  Not sure about android or IOS.

On many websites, if you click the icon that Firefox puts in the top right corner, it removes the "overlay" that the paywall puts in middle of screen.  Depends what kind of paywall it is.

For the newspapers, "behind the overlay" works most of the time.

Here is how to get it:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/behind-the-overlay-revival/

Here is what it looks like in top right of your screen (small icon):

https://addons.cdn.mozilla.net/user-media/previews/full/137/137536.png?modified=1616526117

Here it is for  Chrome. I've never tried it on Chrome.

https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/behind-the-overlay/ljipkdpcjbmhkdjjmbbaggebcednbbme?hl=en

EDIT: Just tried it.  Works perfectly also.

Another thing to know is that for sites that give you like 5 free articles a month, they keep track of how many articles you've read using a cookie.  So, if you clear the cookies for that site after hitting your 5 free articles it resets how many free articles you have left.

@jerryskids Skids, put that dollar back in your wallet - this is the answer to our little "YOU'VE BEEN SELECTED" problem.  I've been catching up on them just now.

Thanks! I already gave them my dollar, that is no big deal.  The catch is that in August it will revert to $25 per month.  Fock that noise.  I had already planned to cancel it before then.

I wonder if this works on the NYT Sunday puzzle?  I haven't done that in forever.  I'm away from my computer fir much of the day but will try later.  👍

Hmmm. Works on our local newspaper. I’ve used it when links posted on this site were behind a paywall.

I guess it can work on occasion with the right site.

Sometimes its more than just cookies.  Sometimes they somehow know your EXACT computer.  I know Facebook knows/tracks EXACTLY my computer ID.

Got banned, tried signing up, immediately after clicking the button to sign up, I get the banned warning.  So...I cleared cookies, got the same thing.  Then I used a VPN with new IP address, and same thing again.  Instantly banned.  Keep in mind, this is with a brand new username also.  Everything was new except the computer.

Then I created an account at a hotel, and it worked, then I got home, cleared cookies,  used a FRESH IP, logged in with username created at hotel,--- boom--banned.  They have something that tracks something down to the nitty gritty that you can't hide. Or at least I cant.

Now that being said, if my wife logs into Facebook from my computer, its fine.  It doesn't ban her.

Facebook has some weird technology/trackers.
